All that comes to mind is a pearl necklace.

Let me guess, you are a live at home mom that just discovered that you can sell shit.

Unfortunately your horizon ends at the end of your nose, so you just want to make "jewellery", right?
And if that doesn't work out, you're going to open your own nail saloon, right?

The laptop fell of the table and the internal antenna in the monitor just broke. So I have these two cables and need a DIY replacement. What do you recommend?

Are you so unhappy about your own life that you tell a guy asking a simple question to kill himself. Either that or you are 12

What model is it? You can probably find a teardown guide on YouTube. Some laptops have a spare set of antenna for a 3g/4g modem that you could use in place of the wifi antenna. They have the same connectors. Do you see anything like that in there?

Trying to extract a bolt with stripped head from alternator chain guard. I first tried with impact driver but the head was too far gone. Then I thought to use screw extractor, but the bolt is so small I can only fit the smallest one in my set, and it's end is so small (and the bolt so tight) that if I try to grab it with pliers or adjustable wrench it just slips. Any ideas? Makes me wonder why they don't sell wrench with the extractors that would have heads that fit the extractors...

the head looks fat enough for vise grips to dig into
>>
six inch pipe wrench
or weld a nut onto it

next time you're using an impact screwdriver make sure you use a bit that fuckin fits and isn't all chewed up and twisted from a previous job.

and while i'm being mad af, don't use ez-outs on seized fasteners for fuck's sake. they're for threads that turn freely but can't be gripped, like if you sheared a bolt through fatigue, or reamed out a grub screw.
>>
>>994251
No welding equipment. I did use correct bit but the head was already little damaged so that was the result. I did manage to get the bolt out, bought vise grips and grabbed the extractor with that.

Can we get a tool appreciation thread going? Got this drill press a few days ago with a fucked motor(150W so useless anyway) for $50AUD, spent the same and 6 hrs in a traffic jam to get a 3 phase motor and VFD. This motor is brand new too, still had the plastic cover over on the shaft and none of the cable knock outs removed. tfw drilling round objects is now possible, tfw mounting a sanding wheel and using the VFD to over speed the motor to 4,000 rippums and grind my axe without ruining the metal.

What tools could you not live without /diy/? What are your most recent purchases, power or hand?

i think i picked up that drill press from harbor freight for <$50 USD brand new.

but yeah a drill press(even a mini one like in the pic) is necessary

a bunch of random sized clamps is good to have

good quality vise grips

a nice table mounted vise
>>
>>994245
Same, shitty drill presses like that used to sell for $50 at canadian tire before everything went to shit.

I'm getting into precision work now and realizing that the tables on those things are nowhere close to straight. I think I'm going to eventually make my own micro drill press.
>>
>>994245
Not only a bunch of random sized clamps, but you can never have too many. In smallish and larger sizes. I say skip the midsized ones. I've never said my 24" clamps are just right.

Hey guys, I was wondering if i could get some advice.
I'm getting a new monitor today.
I want to stand my old on in a portrait configuration, but it's not built for that it seems.
It's an HP 2009m monitor.

Anybody do this ever?

Buy a cheap VESA mount

You see the square HP logo on the back?
Pop the cover off and there is a vesa mount holes behind it.

Buy something like pic related, and mount it in portrait.

If you are planning to have a dual screen setup with the old and the new, you can buy desk vesa mounts like pic related with 2 arms.

All the cheap ones are from the same exact factory so just find them as cheap as you can.

So my GE Nautilus dishwasher isn't draining. I've checked to see that the solenoid operates when turning the dial, it does. Also I checked the resistance. It was 35 ohms, online it said it should be around 40. When turning the dial the solenoid activates, when reaching the wash and rinse cycles, but not when reaching the plate dry or end of the cycle. IDK if that's normal or not, I couldn't find anything online.

I've also checked the filters for obstructions, and checked the drain valve to the sink, everything was clean.

The rubber on the piston valve is in good condition.

So I would assume the last thing it could be is the pump/motor/whatever, right? Is there a way to test this? I've been googling this for hours and I just seem to be at a dead end.

I don't know about that particular model but most dishwashers run the motor in one direction to wash the dishes and reverse the motor to drain.

Is the motor running when it should be draining?

Also, I've seen a couple of cases where the check-valve in the drain hose was clogged causing it to not drain.

The solenoid operates to allow water in. It should not operate when draining.
>>
>>993830
The motor is running on rinse. Should it run on plate dry to pump the water out or is the water pumped at the end of the rinse cycle?

I'll take a look at the check valve in a bit.

How the hell do i get through hard concrete?

Im helping my parents to anchor a new panel into their living room.

Need to hole a 8cm deep hole, half of it is drywall, but when i hit what i assume is concrete, it wont go any further.

I was using a brand new concrete drill tip and a somewhat old 450w hammer-drill. The drill tip actually burned.

I used all my arm strength to no effort. I just havent put on torso and leg strength cause i fear it might actually break the drill.

Should i go after a stronger hammer drill? Am i missing some secret unspoken trick?

If you hit rebar, you'll be dead in the water unless you use a rebar-cutting concrete drill bit. Or you might be hitting a steel bar.

I'm also assuming that you drilled partially into the concrete. If not, then ideally, you would use your smallest drill bit and progressively increase drill bit size.

You need a concrete drill bit with a brazed carbide tip, regular drill bits will just die.

maybe you should confirm that assumption, get in there and see what it's actually hitting

If it could be made smaller it would have been already.

Most likely, considering the pin header connector is one of the main things setting the current PCB size.
What's the point of this question, though?

Someone already has: https://imgur.com/a/J0P5n

You can get rid of some of the stuff on the board. Alternatively you could buy a CHIP (seen in /iot/ OP) which is smaller to begin with...

I'm finally gonna build a garage this summer. I'll try to take some photos. I'll never be Bunkerdude, but who will??

I'm milling up some hemlock. 4 bays. Currently 46 wide by 20' deep, but would be psyched to go 24' deep if it's just as easy.

I'll most probably sheath it in ply (for shear strength) and side it with pine board and batten.

Corrugated tin roof.

On the left I'd probably just build trusses. I'm willing to have posts in between bays, but it'd be nice to do it without.

On the right I'd certainly have a second floor above, with windows on the south side above the bays.

I'm looking for dollars extra (I realize that's pretty tough without knowing materials- but pretty rough) or percentage extra to extend that south wall to give a 6 foot "knee"wall and therefore giving a second floor.

I live in Vermont, so a decent snow load. That's why I started looking at steeper pitches. Front (south) side will have fixed solar panels, so I need right around that pitch and about 8 feet tall for fitting panels (but that's pretty easy to change/fix).

Thanks a bunch.

Hi /diy/, I make vacuum tubes. I make other things as well, but the tubes are by far the most interesting thing. I've been documenting my projects here:

http://simplifier.neocities.org/

If you have any questions, ask away. I don't typically browse here, but it seems like the best place to put this. If you're wondering why the site has almost a year's worth of projects and only ~500 views, it's because I've mostly been using the site to show things to my friends and family what I do in my spare time. I never considered my projects to be novel enough to be worth publicizing. Yesterday I made a working triode though, and I got so excited about it that I had to share it with other people. I'd suggest you start at the bottom, or at least at the vacuum chamber article if you want to have a good idea of what's going on.

Use a capture card to capture the composite output from the VHS player to your computer. Then burn a CD.

Not sure why you want to convert between two obsolete formats though.
>>
>>995452
Not informative enough, OP.
What format is the CD? Are you going to store movie files on a data CD, or are you from Asia and love your video CD format?

In either case, you buy a video capture card or device that can input composite (or S-Video if you VHS player supports it) signals. They cost about $20-30.

I'm designing a beer fridge that's built into a cabinet, I plan to line the cabinet with an insulating foam and pass a thermoelectric cooler through a hole in the foam.

To calculate the required cooling load do I just take the K value for the foam, multiply it by the surface area, thickness and required temperature gradient and then pick a cooler that offers at least that wattage at the required temperature gradient or is it more complicated? I'm not looking to exactly calculate the maximum temperature differential achievable, I just want to get an idea of the required cooling power to give a minimum required cooling wattage.

>thickness
*divide by the thickness

You might as well rip the guts out of a bar fridge. Using peltier devices is incredibly inefficient and you will end up with something that doesn't cool stuff very well while spending a fortune on electricity.
>>
>>995404
Fair enough, but is the calculation method for required cooling power valid?

Anyone have an idea of how I could make an energy drink similar to Red Bull without paying the ridiculous $3+ per can? Caffeine pills are super cheap, so I figure I'd start there... but I'd like to get the other stimulants, like Taurine, in there as well.

Would really appreciate any advice!

I just dump a whole bottle of mio energy (the caffinated ones) into a gallon of water. 20 fl. oz. for 5 days, and the 28oz dose on my longest day. works rather well.
>>
>>995352

Yea, I thought about that, but even those are pretty expensive. You can buy the equivalent of 200 cups of coffee, or 20,000 mg of caffeine pills, for like $12 on amazon instead

Hey guys, a couple months back I've been developing an ever-growing interest in S&M related stuff, thanks to a girl who was also into that sort of stuff and was really keen on the idea of being my sub, even though she never did this with anyone else yet.

Long story short: She really likes ballgags. I'd like to give her a home-made breathable ballgag (it's easier to breathe with the first times), with some low-budget stuff, I already bought a ball with a little bell in it since it's made for cats to play with.

What I'm asking here is, what do you guys suggest I do, like what kind of strap should I put through it, or how/if I should take the bell in it and glue it back together, how to maintain such a piece, etc. Give me your thoughts, I will upload pics with the changes I make!

Duct tape

Works for literally anything
>>
Zipties and duct tape.

Seriously, though, first thoroughly wash that thing, what's suitable for a cat may not be suitable for human. Cut the strap from an old bag if you have one, not sure how to attach it to the gag, though.
>>
>>995285
>>995286

You mean using duct tape to put the halves back together after I take off the bell? I already washed it thoroughly, it was the first thing I did. I was thinking in using thin rope or something similar to go through a pair of holes in the ball so I can tie it up behind her neck.

So basically we all know that analogue signals that were once used for T.V are basically not used anymore (at least in Australia). So why aren't they being utilised for anything else then? I doubt it's even monitored anymore so the law wouldn't affect it too much
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
the main driver for getting rid of analog TV was for govts to create a windfall of one-time revenue as they auction off the spectrum to private enterprise. so, no, it's not yours to play with.
>>
>>995171
any source on the one time revenue thing? I cant find anything on it, or was it american?
>>
think previous anon was prob. thinking more of mobile phone frequencies. These were definitely auctioned.

Some of the old TV frequencies are used for DAB radio, but otherwise, in principle, you right enough, lot of previous analogue TV broadcast frequencies are unused - Bongoland, you can actually use these (license free) if device automatically avoids intereference with existing users, or you can apply for a manually configured license. MS and all sorts of people were doing WiFi trials in this space, dunno how that ended. aka white spaces, see:

http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/tv-white-spaces/

That just UK tho, who strangely I think are the only country who allow 'free' (or at least non-licensed) usage (its not like them) - AUS, heard they are pretty harsh with pirate radio and stuff, using a frequency for whatever would be exactly same principle, stress if busted. And 'unmonitored' is fucking nothing.
