Get a mirror, preferably a dental style one, look where the split is inside. If there are staves/whatever-they-are (bracing maybe?) you're kind of screwed. You're looking at taking it apart (ungluing it) and doing major surgery. If not you can glue in a strip of wood, but you'll need deep reach clamps to do it and I don't know if they exist.

>tl;dr yes you can, but it'll cost you. Is the guitar worth it?
>>
>>993208
You can make custom clamps out of wood and large machine bolts so they'll be the right length.
>>
>>993208
Also, a boroscope may be easier to use than an inspection mirror, depending on the angle.

So I'm trying to figure out how I can make something you can attach to a bike that charges a battery and in turn a phone.
To even get started, what motor could I mount to the bike that would allow it to charge a battery at something like 5v and 2a, while buying spun by the wheel. I get the voltage regulator part but I can't figure out what motor I should use or how I'm even going to mount the fucker
Thanks for your time

Back in the 70s and 80s before LEDs became so good bike lights that used a generator spun by the wheel were commonplace. I'm sure you could still find one.

hello, /diy/, I see there's plenty of components in the market. If I wanted, could I theoretically use this as a camera? It's a 4k camera module for little above £4.
I assume I'd have to compile a driver for it (something I barely know what means), but what else?
Figure I could use this as a webcam, pocket camera or CCTV.

You're better off going to something like DX.com and getting an already working pen camera and working from there.

You also have to design and build a board so you can have it communicate with the computer.

I don't know if you're being a cunt or not, but I don't like your post.

Instead of building a yacht to sail across the world...

What about an airship?

Nothing ridiculously luxurious, basically a flying home with all the accoutrements a long term sailboat would have... like a houseboat airship.

Check out this website. It's the most inspiring one I've seen concerning the topic of airships.

I'm posting pictures from that site. He's got videos of tests of the development of the safest gas bags imaginable. Pure hydrogen isn't flammable at all when it's contained, oxygen makes it flammable. But what about lift gas alternatives? Hot air, helium, etc? Could you have a combination lift gas, like hot hydrogen or hot helium? Both those gasses will expand when heated and provide more lift for the same space, right?

What about combining the benefits of sailboats and airplanes with airships? Could an airship have sails? Because you could have sails beneath the ship and to the sides, I'm guessing you could design the sails so they function not only as propulsion and steering, but ALSO as a power source! Think of sails set up so they provide forward thrust, but rotate like a windmill! It would be beautiful. Let your imagination run wild with it and imagine what it would look like. Imagine a cigar shaped airship with three masts equally spaced along a central ring, slowly spinning and almost looking alive.
>>
>>990929
>It regenerates its own hydrogen gas out of rain and wind power

Amazing. You could cover the entire balloon with solar roadways, too!

As for benefiting from the lessons learned from airplanes, I imagine a lifting body design would be beneficial. It could have wings and a tail for even greater control and lift, too. The wings wouldn't need to be large at all, lifting body designs allow for much smaller wings.

There are so many things we've learned about flight and it's kinda hard for a single person to imagine how you could combine all those features, so I'd like input.

I absolutely adore the design and theory of the ship in the pics I'm posting, by the way. It's literally designed to never have to land, like a watercraft is designed to never sink.

Oh, speaking of the lessons we've learned about flight, I realize hydrogen is a fuel source we've learned not to use but because it's literally the best fuel for personal use, it's the only realistic option I can think of... aside from using a hot air system heated by hydrogen burners and using motors fueled by hydrogen.

Grainger has some stuff and they usually have a local store just about anywhere in the country (US).

Google metal supply for online resources like http://www.speedymetals.com/
>>
>>990650
Around where I live there are a couple of places I go, a steel fabricator and a steel recycling place. They are both local so there's not much point in going into details.

I can go there and get 20 ft of steel (in pretty much any possible shape and thickness) for less than the cost of getting 3 ft at Lowe's or Home depot.

Look for steel distributors in your area in the phone book or online.

Please, please stop buying from hardware stores, you are literally robbing yourself, throwing money down the drain.
>>
Stop buying material from a hardware store. Find a local metal supplier. The selection will be much better and with lower prices.

I live in Ontario and I use Golden triangle speciality metals, production metals, and metal supermarkets.

So recently my landlord at my apartment had to replace the outdoor unit for my AC due to it being old & no good.

The unit itself looks fine but I question the installation job.

For some odd reason when they replaced the outdoor unit, they didn't bother to replace the foam insulation for the refrigerant line. A good part of it is exposed and I had the idea to buy some to get it covered up assuming it's pretty simple to do, should I bother.?

Also as to why I just haven't asked the landlord, the repair guy is pretty unreliable and often takes forever just to respond to a ticket.
Here are a couple of images.

nice work OP. looks quality, 10/10 would use that cutting board!

today i made a couple "dead kitten" wind muffs for my location/field recording mics. i've made larger ones last year for a pair of studio mics so i was familiar with the process and got a few things right this time that i didn't get last time. i already tested them out and they work fucking fantastic, and they sound good too.

the pelt of faux fur was $3, I used about half of it for the two mics and some thread and about 8" of double sided tape. SO i figure each of the muffs cost about $1 in materials. the absolute cheapest name brand ones i could get would be about $30 each, going up to about $150. can't wait to get /out/ and use them!

Hi /diy/, I want to start making things out of wood but I have no idea where to start. I've googled basic tools for beginners and read the woodgears.ca page for plebs and all that, but my problem is really putting this into real life.
Should I buy a sawhorse or a work bench/table? Apparently I should make my own, but if I do, what the hell do I cut my wood on? And how do I know what wood to use (type, thickness, etc.)? I know I want to try making a table but I don't have plans for any of it; no measurements, no idea what kind of wood I'd want. Not sure if I should get a jigsaw or a circular saw or both.
I have a couple questions regarding protection as well: Do I need any special respirators or masks if I'm just cutting stuff with a jigsaw or a circular saw? How loud are any of these motorized saws - should I get ear protection?
I did woodworking for a few months in highschool so I have a bit of knowledge of how things work, but it was an established woodshop with everything I'd need already there.

>I want to start making things out of wood
why?

>Should I buy a sawhorse or a work bench/table?
depends on your budget

>what the hell do I cut my wood on?
anything solid

>And how do I know what wood to use (type, thickness, etc.)?
depends on your budget

>Not sure if I should get a jigsaw or a circular saw or both.
depends on your budget; circular saw

>How loud are any of these motorized saws - should I get ear protection?
>I did woodworking for a few months in highschool
>it was an established woodshop
an "established woodshop" but they didn't have any motorized saws?

you should always use eye and vision protection
>>
>>993083
>why?
Because I want to make things. Specifically, I eventually want to build a large wooden terrarium as glass ones in pet stores only go up to a certain size.
>rest of the post
Assume budget isn't really an issue, I guess.
>an established woodshop without motorized saws?
We only got to use the bandsaw, so I've never seen them in use/had a chance to use the other saws.
>always use eye and vision protection
I've got plenty of safety glasses and goggles so we're good on that front.
>>
>>993079
dude, you're overthinking this

last year i built two tables and i used nothing but a cordless drill, a bowsaw, a handsaw and a sander(but you could just use sandpaper)

you can get the wood pretty much the size you want it from your local store, they'll normally cut it for you

ITT: We figure out a way to create a solar panel from scratch with, hopefully, enough power to start a small RC chopper.

I dont even know how to start, any takers?

Starting and flying are 2 very different things...

I'm not familiar enough with current solar tech, let alone trying to Jew it from scratch. But just looking at the designs for solar planes.... I'm not sure a solar powered helicopter is pheasable. This does have me curious though, I'll stick around and watch the shenanigans ensue.
>>

Recommendations for a mini set of taps?

There are some on amazon, though the quality seems to be pretty low. Not looking to do anything crazy, just fix the holes in some knife scales. Cheap is the word...

Save yourself a headache and get some 3n1 oil instead of the wd40.
>>
>>992583
Cheap taps and dies (like any generic ones, and even those name-brand sold at retail hardware stores) are generally really shitty quality. They break really easily, yet even with lube they require like TWICE the torque to drive them. Plus they don't usually say the size tolerances.

My advice:
Go to a machinist supply website, and just order the specific sizes of taps and dies that you need. They cost more each but you can just get the ones you need, so the total cost is not high and you get much-better-quality taps and dies.

Dies can be made from HSS or carbon steel, but taps should *always* be HSS. The reason is that HSS is tougher and more-resistant to breaking, and this is more important with a tap than a die.

Taps and dies from machinist sites let you specify the "fit", which is the part clearance between the "screw" threads and the "hole" threads. I normally buy 2H taps and split dies. (the die fit of a split die is adjustable). REEEAALLYYY tiny taps & dies may not offer different fits at all.

You can use any oil for cleaning up threads or cutting threads in most metals, just use something. Even vegetable oil works. For hard steel or stainless steel, get proper tapping fluid.

Hand tap sets will have 3 taps each of the same thread size.
I usually buy spiral-point taps, but they are plug taper and can be difficult to start in a hole without some method to guide them. I have a drill press and milling machine for that.
>>
>>992583
small taps are not where u want to cheap out on OP, you will break them off inside holes and totally wreck whatever youre working on
