Get a mirror, preferably a dental style one, look where the split is inside. If there are staves/whatever-they-are (bracing maybe?) you're kind of screwed. You're looking at taking it apart (ungluing it) and doing major surgery. If not you can glue in a strip of wood, but you'll need deep reach clamps to do it and I don't know if they exist.

I'm posting pictures from that site. He's got videos of tests of the development of the safest gas bags imaginable. Pure hydrogen isn't flammable at all when it's contained, oxygen makes it flammable. But what about lift gas alternatives? Hot air, helium, etc? Could you have a combination lift gas, like hot hydrogen or hot helium? Both those gasses will expand when heated and provide more lift for the same space, right?

What about combining the benefits of sailboats and airplanes with airships? Could an airship have sails? Because you could have sails beneath the ship and to the sides, I'm guessing you could design the sails so they function not only as propulsion and steering, but ALSO as a power source! Think of sails set up so they provide forward thrust, but rotate like a windmill! It would be beautiful. Let your imagination run wild with it and imagine what it would look like. Imagine a cigar shaped airship with three masts equally spaced along a central ring, slowly spinning and almost looking alive.

As for benefiting from the lessons learned from airplanes, I imagine a lifting body design would be beneficial. It could have wings and a tail for even greater control and lift, too. The wings wouldn't need to be large at all, lifting body designs allow for much smaller wings.

There are so many things we've learned about flight and it's kinda hard for a single person to imagine how you could combine all those features, so I'd like input.

I absolutely adore the design and theory of the ship in the pics I'm posting, by the way. It's literally designed to never have to land, like a watercraft is designed to never sink.

Oh, speaking of the lessons we've learned about flight, I realize hydrogen is a fuel source we've learned not to use but because it's literally the best fuel for personal use, it's the only realistic option I can think of... aside from using a hot air system heated by hydrogen burners and using motors fueled by hydrogen.

I wanted to make my own doll but was thinking of embedding steel bearings and neodymium magnets into the joints instead of all that string shit.

Around where I live there are a couple of places I go, a steel fabricator and a steel recycling place. They are both local so there's not much point in going into details.

I can go there and get 20 ft of steel (in pretty much any possible shape and thickness) for less than the cost of getting 3 ft at Lowe's or Home depot.

Look for steel distributors in your area in the phone book or online.

Please, please stop buying from hardware stores, you are literally robbing yourself, throwing money down the drain.

Stop buying material from a hardware store. Find a local metal supplier. The selection will be much better and with lower prices.

today i made a couple "dead kitten" wind muffs for my location/field recording mics. i've made larger ones last year for a pair of studio mics so i was familiar with the process and got a few things right this time that i didn't get last time. i already tested them out and they work fucking fantastic, and they sound good too.

the pelt of faux fur was $3, I used about half of it for the two mics and some thread and about 8" of double sided tape. SO i figure each of the muffs cost about $1 in materials. the absolute cheapest name brand ones i could get would be about $30 each, going up to about $150. can't wait to get /out/ and use them!

We only got to use the bandsaw, so I've never seen them in use/had a chance to use the other saws.

last year i built two tables and i used nothing but a cordless drill, a bowsaw, a handsaw and a sander(but you could just use sandpaper)

Starting and flying are 2 very different things...

I'm not familiar enough with current solar tech, let alone trying to Jew it from scratch. But just looking at the designs for solar planes.... I'm not sure a solar powered helicopter is pheasable. This does have me curious though, I'll stick around and watch the shenanigans ensue.

Cheap taps and dies (like any generic ones, and even those name-brand sold at retail hardware stores) are generally really shitty quality. They break really easily, yet even with lube they require like TWICE the torque to drive them. Plus they don't usually say the size tolerances.

My advice:
Go to a machinist supply website, and just order the specific sizes of taps and dies that you need. They cost more each but you can just get the ones you need, so the total cost is not high and you get much-better-quality taps and dies.

Dies can be made from HSS or carbon steel, but taps should *always* be HSS. The reason is that HSS is tougher and more-resistant to breaking, and this is more important with a tap than a die.

Taps and dies from machinist sites let you specify the "fit", which is the part clearance between the "screw" threads and the "hole" threads. I normally buy 2H taps and split dies. (the die fit of a split die is adjustable). REEEAALLYYY tiny taps & dies may not offer different fits at all.

You can use any oil for cleaning up threads or cutting threads in most metals, just use something. Even vegetable oil works. For hard steel or stainless steel, get proper tapping fluid.

Hand tap sets will have 3 taps each of the same thread size.
I usually buy spiral-point taps, but they are plug taper and can be difficult to start in a hole without some method to guide them. I have a drill press and milling machine for that.
