So it's building time!

I decided to start building a house. For that you need an architect. I wonder if I'm alone with my frustration (rage?) in hte fdact that architects don't seem to care about my scetches. I drew both the house and the garage in 3D, with quite some detail. Immediately when they got their hands oon the plans trhey needed to start adding windows, changing measurements and shit!
After the first architect was so slow and didn't listen to our ideas (didn't look at the original plans) we changed the architect for the garage. And now it's the same deal!
I drew the carport to be 3m. Now it's 3,5m! What the fuck! Are these guys all the same or did we just happen to get the two rotten apples?
Architects are in a splendid situation with the builders having tons of money still so maybe they are used to overcharging? I don't know. This just pisses me off and I hope you guys have better luck with your makers of plans...

>I want architects to follow MY DRAWING!!! EXACTLY!!!!!!
Why do you use an architect again?
>>
Architects are giant fucking con artists. I built a house this past year with bids between 8-14% of construction costs for a smallish 2000 sq ft house. Over 15,000$. Then I got lucky and found a draftsman who did all the same work, the building schedule prints etc, worked with an engineer all for 1200$. And built it exactly as I wanted. Architects are typical college educated pretentious middlemen offering no value whatsoever unless you have money to burn.
>>
>>993834
You're talking to an architect because he knows 3m is dumb for a garage door, eg you can't buy a cheap garage door to fit it, you will find it annoying to walk around and exciting to park in, or it may even be too narrow to be co sideres a garage by local housing authority so that .5m might take 70k off your resale value because now your house doesn't t have a garage

This same logic applies to Windows, closets, wedding caking your 2nd story so it doesn't look like a soviet housing project....

So these small nuts broke loose from my laptop screen frame. Was thinking of giving superglue a try but I think the bond will be too weak.

You got a better solution? Let's hear it!
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>993732
since the plastic rings seem broken i would recommend using epoxy glue and glue the metal to the frame itself.
>>
Replace the plastics. There is nothing that will work better.

Once new plastics are installed, check the screw tightness regularly. Loose screws are the only real reason the plastics fail over time to the point the retainers fall out. Screen hinges put a lot of force on those screws, so they wiggle out over time, which gives the motion more leverage and wobbles the retainer intul it splits the plastic and the whole thing falls to bits.

Ugh, you might, and I emphasize MIGHT, get away with hot melting new plastic into the holes, then use a soldering iron to melt the retainers into the new plastic, but it would still be a shit patch, and likely fail again within two or three open/closings of the lid.

Time to cost ratio = cheaper to get new plastics and swap the parts over.

Source: Repairing far too many laptops over the years, commercially and for family.
>>
Cheap ugly solution: drill holes through both sides of the frame, add some material to make the hinge snug against both sides, sandwich it with metal plates, bolt them together.

This was literally just "because I can" entertainment. I'm stationed up in Thule, Greenland and ripped an old rotary phone out of an abandoned radar building up here.

I drug the thing down to my place on main base and proceeded to splice it into a regular RJ-11 jack (yes I know this is easy to do with parts stateside but I don't have them up here). The easiest option was just to open up the phone and connect red to red and green to green. Phone wiring colors haven't changed in decades.

On first attempt I got a dial tone and could receive calls...but I didn't hear the phone ring. I found there is a special selector inside Western Electric 500 phones that dictates the ring power and moving it fixed the ring.

The final issue was calling....pulse dialing seems to be dead here (prolly has been for ages) so I grabbed a tone generator app on my cell phone and successfully dialed numbers using the app by holding it up to the receiver and dialing.

Awesome, several years ago had a fun experience watching my nephew trying to call on a rotary phone. He was working it like a push button phone.

Anyone know much about starter robotics kits?

I'm an undergrad mechatronics engie looking to start on my own projects and dont want to have to order pieces and pieces individually. Does anyone here have any recommendations for a good kit?

>>993560
Just pick up a Mindstorms kit. You can reflash them to run on LUA, and it's all lego, so it's easy to get parts.
>>
>>993560
I've found it easier to get what you need when you need it. That way you don't waste your money on crap you don't need.

It's even more awesome when you can make the parts you need, esp any metalwork or etc.

I could second the lego idea too. They're always fun and handy.

As far as kits go, what are you looking to accomplish right off hand?

Honestly I just want some experience programming + Designing. I'm interested in making some kind of robot that does something..."cool" and not insignificant. Can even be a robotic arm.

I have access to a water jet cutter and I can design the shit myself, that might be smart. Any ideas for where I can get all the misc parts/electronics?

Hello /diy/! I'm just wondering if anyone can identify this tool for me, I bought it at a flea market, the seller told me that it had a small hook at the blunt end that he'd snapped off, it's 7 3/4 inches long. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Might not fit /diy/ 100% but it worths give a try.
Does any of you lives in a house with very dry air?
I moved into this studio apartment and I wake up every damn morning with dry mouth. May sound silly, but at weekend if I want to sleep more or stay in bed, I cannot because I feel like having a mask on my mouth that makes difficult to breath. As soon as I stand up, situation gets better, but it is annoying that if I want to rest. A couple of friends of mine that happened to sleep overnight had the same feeling too.
This winter I could put some bowls with water on the radiator and I have also bought an humidifier. Situation got just a little bit better.
Now is getting warmer and I cannot put bowls on radiators anymore and I don't want to spend money on electricity.
I tried buying some plants, but they died in a couple of weeks, I am not good with them.
Funny thing is that I live in a fairly cold city (Berlin) and nowadays I even keep the windows open 24/24. Does this make the sitauation better or worse? Any tip is welcome.

Yes that will make it dryer. Or at least increase air circ, making it feel dryer if its not humid.

The colder it gets, the dryer you will feel as well.

Go get a humidifier. The electricity to run it will be pennies compared to building your own rainforest.

Hey guys

One of my 5 meter HDMI cable connectors broke like pic related and I'm unsure if I should just throw it away or keep it for something else. What could be done with it? HDMI cables have 19 internal wires, if I'm not mistaken.

A new cable is cheaper than attempting to repair it.

It would be possible but not worth it unless you cannot replace due to location.

Is it in a wall or something?

No, it was running across the room. I'll buy another cable. I was wondering if I should just discard or keep it.

Im going to be sending out themed mail to someone and i want the box to look like its been passed around for a few years before it got to them.

How do i make it look old and worn?

Its going to be a regular box wrapped with brown paper, tied, and sealed with wax but i dont want it to look new.
31 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
You can make the paper look older by dragging a wet teabag over it and then drying it on the heater.
The more you repeat this the older the paper will look.
Furthermore you should follow your pic.
Add some kind of seal, some rope, handwritten etc.
>>
>>993418
You can also use coffee instead of tea.

Try also crumbling and straightening the paper a few times. A light sanding with fine sandpaper could also create a worn down effect, especially if the box is made of cardboard.
>>
>>993418
>>993421
These help.

Also what should the packing material in the box be, shredded paper?

This is a surprisingly hard subject to research on.

I can't find a model for it so I guess your best bet would be to create a model by yourself.
(sketchup, autoCAD or something else) and then get it printed. Then you can use your own dice molds.

Also what >>993420 said.
Self printed/made dice are almost never fair.
This is why dice are way more expensive than their material costs

Hey guys,

so we're going on festival soon, and I have some parts left from various car setups from which I want to build a music box.

In the image you can see the components I have. I've got two questions though:
- Can I use the input of the amplifier and connect it with a chinch-to-aux cable, so I can directly connect a smartphone to it? For a car radio you need a hi-lo-adapter... so this should work out right?
- Will the battery last for a reasonable time? If it is completely full

Sorry for the bad montage lol. Thanks in advance for help!

I've got an old metal shed in my backyard that's been there since before I bought the house that I want to take down. I don't plan on replacing it with anything; it's just an eyesore. It's small, about ten feet by ten feet square. Don't know what metal it's made out of but I do know it corrodes. It's been sitting out there for about twenty years of storms and is slightly overgrown with ivy, so I imagine it can't be very structurally stable at this point.

I have a stepladder, sledgehammer, bolt cutters, and your average assortment of conventional house tools. I don't keep any power tools on hand, but I can easily rent some. I have experience using them, but not for metalworking, so I'm hesitant to leap into using them for that purpose.

Pic related is close enough to what the shed looks like. Sorry about the stock photo; I'm away from my house right now.

How would you guys suggest going about this project, aside from the general strategy of "empty the shed, remove the ceiling panels, and knock down the walls"?

>get pickup truck
>get chain
>attach chain to tow hitch on truck
>attach other end of chain onto a corner support post
>put in drive
>pick up pieces and place in truck bed
>use reciprocating saw to cut wood on parts to large to stow
>strap the shit down
>drive to scrap yard
>sell materials
>literal profit

a shed like that should be down, loaded, delivered, unloaded and money changed hands in about 2-5 hours, depending on how many beers you got.
>>
>>993300

That's a great idea, but unfortunately I should have mentioned that the shed is about thirty yards deep into a fenced-off backyard, on top of a fifteen-foot hill and in a thicket of trees. I don't think the pickup truck solution would be very practical

What's an easy to use, yet reliable, RC receiver and transmitter pair?

I have a pretty good idea about how to make a remote control using an Arduino, but I have no idea about the RC part.

There's a few options now and none of them are expensive. What kind of data do you need to send? Do you need 2-way communication?

(shopping on aliexpress)
1. there are cheap single-channel rf setups that have a 4-button remote, and a receiving unit board. usually 315 mhz, cost = $3, range is maybe ~50 feet line of sight

2. there are cheap single-channel "arduino" board modules there too, that just use TTL input to transmit "pulses" from the transmitter to the receiver board. One-way only and you must write the system to tell what the pulses mean. 315 or 433mhz, cost is ~$60 cents a set (xmit + recv boards)

3. there are NRF24L01 2.4ghz radio modules there for ~75 cents each. These are SPI devices but they support 2-way communication plus a bunch of other stuff. The PCB antenna ones have a range around 200+ feet line-of-sight.

4. you can also get the NRF24L01 modules with an external antenna that kicks the range up to 400-500 feet. Cost is maybe $3 each. For an RC toy, this is the best overall, IMO.

5. there are also ESP8266 modules. These are ~2.4Ghz, you can get them with PCB or external antennas, and they support TCP/IP connections so that you can connect to a web browser on a phone or PC. Cost is $2-$4 each, they are somewhat more hassle to use tho.

-----

A common problem with any of the NRF24L01 or ESP8266 modules is that they only need 3.3 volts but they can draw a lot of current when transmitting--500 milliamps or more.
Many people seem to underestimate the current draw and have problems as a result.

I've got this hidden bookcase door that I need to stop from sagging.

W: 29 1/4"

H: 53"

D: 11 11/16"

It's twisting forward on the left side (shown) and I've got to find some way to rebuild it and strengthen it without showing anything in front (on the shelving area) and I'm limited on the sides and bottom for supports. Currently it's supported by another board screwed onto the right side which has had holes routed out for Soss hinges (Shown below)

http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=soss+hinges+212&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=77212464432&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13455505179127009958&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_64k8ub8cpe_b

The shelf sags just like shown (though a bit exaggerated)

Any suggestions to correct this? I'm kind of lost for a starting point.

>Inventor simulation of bookcase to illustrate sag

This might be the most autistic OP I've ever seen. I love it.

Below (or above) each shelf that sags, put a plate. Aluminum is probably enough, you could get thinner with steel, but even plastic might work.

Affix it in the corners or along the perimeter of the shelf.

If the edge always sags most, which it generally would, you can get by with just supporting the edges this way rather than covering the entire area. But for small materials, a hollow square/rectangle won't be much difference price-wise from a plate.
>>
>>993181
Put a beam under each shelf anchored to each side.
>>
>>993181
is this somthing you've built already and it's sagging? or are you just concerned from this model?
I doubt MDF would sag like that over those dimensions unless you are actually having this floating like a door, and there is no support from the ground.

in that case I'd suggest reconsidering having it floating, especially considering it's a hidden door, you want it looking as set-in-place as possible.

if you NEED it floating, it's probably going to need a stud up the left side all the way up the edge and an L shaped brace along the bottom.

I assume I'm looking at a cross section of wall, and the hidden cavity behind the unit? hinges along the right hand edge?

Hi /diy/

So I've been building this lawn mower go kart thing for a while now but the motor on it is being a peice of shit. It's a 6.5 honda GX clone and when i got it it was pretty trashed. Since then i've done fucking E V E R Y T H I N G to it, but it still won't run for more than 3 seconds before dying. My thoughts are the previous owner fucked up the valves, it's pretty hard to turn over, and that's literally the only thing left i haven't fucked with on it.
Any small engine gurus out there with some advice?
