My sister gave me this old radio/recordplayer to both fill up my apartment and so I have something to work on if I'm bored and have some spare time. I had electronics as my main course in highschool, but it's 2 years ago since I graduated and began my apprenticeship which doesn't include working on smaller electronics so I've forgotten most of it except the easier stuff like switches, lights, sockets etc.

Most old radios like this will have at least a basic schematic taped somewhere on inside, if it has not been removed.

Unless you have experience refurbishing furniture or just want to do it for the experience i would not recommend it, most attempts i have seen turn out less than great.
Besides, it does not look to be in that bad condition.

The voltages in old tube equipment can easily kill you. but with proper precautions and equipment that console could be made fully functional in only a couple of days.

Dude, this is a Philips battlestation from th 50's.
Tho phono on the right area seems to be of a pick-up kind : BEWARE those heads are fragile like hell, and working ones are very hard to source nowadays.
Your phono looks like a AG1000 chassis (see AG1004, AG1006 and last but not least AG1100 whose colour seems close enough to yours), fitted with a AG3016 head.
First of all you can check if the pick-up still work by extracting the chassis from the wooden cabinet (4 screws at each angle of the turntable) they look for the two/three wires coming out the arm.
Your mileage may vary : either you will end with two bananas or two RCA, but at least you would be able to connect your phono to an actual amp insofar it as a RIAA compatible input.
Consider checking the phono part first, it's fucking easy, and some WD40 sprayed on the gears can't be that bad.
The radio part is another subject : those old bastards runs with kV voltages, like CRT tubes TV. And capacitors vanishes with time, so powering that beast without checking them may sound like instakill... tldr; Replace each capacitor with modern counterpart, if same voltage is not available, take upper one.
Checking filament status is easy : proceed lamp per lamp.
Remove each lamp using a towel so your finger doesn't mark the glass and/or remove markings, then look the interweb for matching datasheet so you figure out which pins are for filament, then beep them with your multimeter's continuity function.
No beep ? try applying the right voltage and check if lamp lights. No beep AND no light, then dead tube : keep it for reference and order a new one (if too pricy, check for soviet new old stock tubes, they usualy have cross reference for ridiculous prices)

I'd like to utilize it to make some graveled pathways if possible. What are some methods of making the paths in a way that no vegetation grows from beneath the gravel or at least minimize it to the point where maintenance is easier?
Something relatively permanent would be great, so no 'cides/weed killers which require regular spraying, dont feel like spending cash on that shit.

They sell plastic sheeting for that purpose, measure how big your path is going to be, width and length, go to pretty much any hardware store/garden centre and they sell it in a huge roll, you lay that down and then put the gravel on top and you're done.
If you want specific plants to grow through it (say in a garden bed) then just cut a hole in the plastic and plant your plant where the hole is.

Just make sure it's the plastic sheeting that's designed to for garden beds, you want it to have holes in it so that water goes through, otherwise you'll end up with pools of water and that won't end well for anyone.

Homebrewer here, I've been brewing for about 3 years but have been limited in my options for upgrading equipment due to living in a small place.
I'll be moving to a house in a month or so and plan on buying a used fridge to convert to a fermentation chamber. Not sure yet if I plan on going the STC1000 route, or a pre-wired thermo-controller (more expensive), or even doing something like brew-pi with a dedicated web server. Side by side fridge with freezer side being a kegerator is also an option.
I'm interested in hearing from others who've done similar or are planning to. Just looking for some good ideas to take from. Thanks.
Been brewing with an electronic BIAB setup for a year now and extracs/kit n kilo for a year before that.
I set up a fermentator fridge with an stc-1000 and a tiny space heater and I'm really happy with the results I'm getting. Right now I'm working on an enclosure for my thermal probes and integrating temperature logging to the setup.
The picture is the second enclosure I've made for the STC-1000, it sits snugly on the fermentator. I'm doing my first lager yeast brews now and am using the https://github.com/matsstaff/stc1000p project to create fermentation profiles.

very cool.. I've just been using a water tub with frozen water bottles and rotating them out during hot weather to control temps.
There's so many ways to go with this it's kind of overwhelming when trying to decide what avenue to take.
I definitely want to be able to ferment lagers, and an automated system that slowly ramps up temp and incorporates diacetyl rest is ideally what I'll end up going for.
Does your stc1000 just control fridge side temps, or freezer and fridge?

It's a full fridge, as in, no freezer compartment. I can easily fit 2 buckets in it.
I also have a keezer that's using an unmodified stc1000 for maintaining an appropriate temperature.
I have a third one that I've used for mash temperature control. Like I said, I have a BIAB setup so I control the element for the mashing period. That coupled with sustained recirculation via pump keeps the temps pretty solid throughout the process.
Hey there diy, you guys are the only useful board and I need your help due to google not showing me anything productive.
The spout of my tub does pic related. When the shower is on it just has water coming out of it still in pretty steady smaller streams. The thing at the top you pull is stuck, I can't push it or pull it without the spout flexing and making me feel like I'm about to break it.
I tried google but I must not know the proper words, everything that comes up involves the spout leaking while it's off and that's not the issue I'm having.
I'm currently in government dorms due to being in the military, and CE should fix this but due to a backlog they probably won't be by for over a month and this is seriously impeding my shower time because it doesn't have enough water pressure with the spout leaking. So i can't hire anyone and I want to try to fix it myself if possible.
Has anyone had similar problems and is there a relatively easy fix for this? I'd appreciate any help I can get

Turn the water off to that. Unscrew the entire spout, take out the stopper. Use a wire brush up inside to get all the build up out. Put rest into vinegar for like a day repeat brushing until clean. Replace the rubber sealer/ring thing.
It should work fine after that. Or buy a new one and screw it on instead. Remember pipe tape for the threads.

If you aren't going to buy a soldering iron or DIY one out of a power supply or something... I'd either pay the manufacturer for a repair (They often do that) Or call around to some local cell phone repair guys. Some of them do soldering and more advanced repairs and this wouldn't be a big deal for them. I'd ask for a brand new cable, and just replace the whole thing from the headphones. Or even put a jack in the headphones so you can just replace the cable whenever.

Yeah they're all tied together correctly. I did this before with another set she chewed (I'm getting rid of her after this bullshit), but I had access to a soldering iron then so it turned out okay. What do you mean by the last sentence there?
I just ordered a new set after I found out she broke them, but I would like to fix these if possible. She broken completely severed the green wire in the piece she was chewing.
