Sup /DIY/,
I'm getting into making my own loot crates. Kind of a middle-ground between gifting people something that is both home-made and not worthless. You know, for Christmas, Halloween, etc.
Thus far I've made a few rough prototypes like pic related with themes like Resident Evil. As far as materials go, I've done everything from hit up the 99 cent store to digging around in my junk drawer.
So I'm looking to trade up in materials and brainstorming. Doing things like getting properly-shaped boxes from online, printing out labels/stickers, that kind of stuff.
Anyone else doing this on a semi-regular basis?
>>992581
That looks terrible.
Anyways, a tip.
Get yourself a cheap laser printer, some xylene (hardware store) and a brush. Print something on thick paper, lay it flat down on cardboard and start brushing with xylene.
Use something to push the paper down (burnishing) and repeat a few times.
The image from the paper is now transferred to the cardboard. People always are amazed how you got the image on.
For extra info, this process is called "solvent transfer".

>That looks terrible.
>protoype
No but it's a great idea mate. Have 3 for dudes and 3 for chicks on hand for birthdays.
Good plan.
Also love this solvent transfer idea

Take a wave and make it really tiny, like really.
There's no way you can make a microwave without acquiring the main components, like the magnetron, transformer and the metal case, and at that point it's probably wiser to buy one rather than to nigger rig it together.

Is there any way to weaken the strength of a binder clip?
Open it farther than it's supposed to with pliers?
>>992198
Currently attempting.
>>992203
Shit. It snapped away from the pliers and I lost it. Getting another binder clip.
How would I go about making this
materials?
>>991788
Maybe EVA foam or wood would be your best bet
>>991788
have a long central core of pvc pipe or a metal pipe. Buy carvable foam. Something that can be sanded. cut it and stack it on the central core so that there is equal amounts of foam on all sides and the pipe is in the middle. Now start carving and sanding till you got the cone shape then carve and sand till you get the spiral. Lathe the handle out of wood or something.
If you want it to light up, there will be a whole different process which requires some thought but it is definitely possible. All you need is a WS2812 LED strip, an arduino mini and the FastLED library or other such library and some coding. You will have to redo the blade with maybe clear resin or something. I dunno. Requires thought like i said.
i tried to post this in reddit but i discovered reddit is the biggest pile of wank
i found a screwdriver in my grandparents cellar, ive had it for years and its my favorite though i have no idea what the bit is, would be nice to be able to use it more as i make quite a lot of things, to be clear i mean the bit that isnt the phillips bit, as in is there a universal name for this?

Hi /DIY/
I'm looking at doing my first serious /DIY/ project and am hoping for a bit of advice. The project will be making an EDC tool a bit like pic related ( hunting knife from Benchmade ) but with a glassbreaker instead of a guthook, a 2.49 inch Wharncliffe blade and ( not that there is a huge difference ) a strap cutter instead of a gut hook.
I've been looking for a nice rescue tool I could carry with my daily but have yet to find one, pic related was the closest I could find to what I wanted. I'd like to design this with dymondwood instead of orange or black g10 to give it a more mellow look while making the blade short enough for it to be legal to carry anywhere. Because of this it also cannot have thumb studs ( I'm thinking nail knicks, holes like Spyderco or a flipper ) nor can it be automatic. I also can't have the blade(s) lock which, while not ideal, shouldn't be a problem with the right cutting techniques.
So what I specifically need help with is how to get started. I don't know much about design or building but I feel like I need to give this a try. I do have paper/pencil and don't know what else I'll need.
inb4 "no weapon-" I'm not designing a weapon. I am designing a tool.
I hear bears are rife on busses. Good idea on the knife/glass hammer combo.
>>991418
Bears and Cubs are only on the buses in Chicago.
Jokes aside; a lot of knives have glass-breakers and/or gut hooks/strap cutters but I've yet to see one that looks anything like a gentleman's knife. That is what I'm going for and I just need a bit of help with learning how to design something like that.
>>991414
>how to get started
draw up your blades, frame, and scales
>cannot have thumb studs ( I'm thinking nail knicks, holes like Spyderco or a flipper ) nor can it be automatic. I also can't have the blade(s) lock
because of the wharncliffe blade youll have a pretty straight hadle, and i believe a flipper will be in the way. I suggest you include a spyderco style opening hole. Are you going to use a ball bearing detente to keep the blades open?
For the entire time that I've been interested in electronics, I've heard that the Arduino Uno is for prototyping. Well, I have made my project and coded it for the Arduino Uno. How the fuck do I make it smaller, though? I tried to use an Adafruit Trinket, but my code wasn't compatible.
I'm trying to build a music box for my friend. I'm using the "Playtunes" library and it works like a charm. It sounds great and it is simple as fuck to use.
How do I lower the form factor without having to change my code? Is there a way?
Build off the chip?,,,
Or get a smaller board that has the pins you need... Arduino nano is my usual choice. Arduino pro is a bit smaller since no USB on it.
>>988665
I like the look of the Nano a lot. But what do you mean by "Build off the chip?" I'm not familiar with that term.
Thanks for your help, by the way.
>>988670
Google how to build a "minimal Arduino".

every time a local guy moves his bees to a lot near me. I see a huge increase in horse flies.. and the closer to the hives I get, the more horse flies seem to be hanging around?

Im trying to use my prusa i3 to print a quadcopter:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:511668
or at least as big as that, the problem is that althought the bed is in ,theory 200x200mm it actually is more like 190x190 but not from the bed itself but the Y belt.
So even if I download the sorter version I still need like those 10 mm in the Y axis to print it.
I thought about taking out a little the rods of the Y axis but that would mean a lot of adjustments later and if I don't do it carefully I might break or deform something.
The other idea I had is to change the Y-belt clamp to one more compact, but I don't know if such thing would actually give me the small extra distance I need.
So... any ideas?
>>980903
i would suggest against printing a quad frame
the first time you'll crash it will disintegrate, and you will crash it since its a 200 sized quad
you'd be better off buying a $15 frame off HK
>>981045
but one of the points of 3d printing is about replication and redundancy, right? I mean, if it breaks I don't have to wait to some chinese sweatshop to make it for me, I could even carry spare parts that extend beyond some screws and batteries...
If I rely on online shops, whats the point then?
And anyway, I'm still losing 10 mm, this can actually be more important than a quadcopter since what is actually happening is that I can print all the designs that assume that I have a commercial-like 3d printer with exactly 200x200mm.
I have no a/c in my car. and have been thinking about ghetto rigging some thing in my car. my first idea whas to take a 12V coolign bag and use the cooling element in that. but i think they are to weak. i also woder if taking a container of ice and blowing air through it but then i have to get/make ice all the time. someone got any ideas???
>>994488
Get a AC unit for your car from a junk yard and install it.

u acn get those in 12V?? the ones i find have a belt driven compressor
So I want to make a light bar for my pickup.
My plan is to get 25 of those Chinese 100w leds and put them in a row. Attach the plastic dome lenses to the front to focus them. And that's as far as I got.
For this application, will I need to water-cool the LEDs?
After all it is 2500 watts or so I have the cool.
Should I bring in 120v and convert down at the LED to reduce wire size? Or just use big wires and buss bars?
Any experience with the cheapest of all 100w leds? They are probably all rejects, but they will still work sans 1 or 2 elements right?
How should I drive them?
You will also need 25 led drivers. Check the input voltages.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEFneTFl6_4
>>994348
why in fuck would you need 2500W LED in the first place? Protip: you don't.
Hi /diy/ !
I want to sew my own swim diapers.
Or buy material and let them get custom-made somewhere.
What materials should I use?
WHat will be the cost, for buying materials and getting it sewn together?
>>994282
What is this?
>>994282
>I want to sew my own swim diapers.
Cool
>Or buy material and let them get custom-made somewhere.
This will be expensive. Probably about $30-50 per pair if you can find a novice to do it.
>What materials should I use?
Synthetic fabrics so they don't hold water.
>WHat will be the cost, for buying materials and getting it sewn together?
Materials, probably like $20-25 you're looking at less than a half yard of fabric for the inner and outer layer. Elastic for the legs and waist and buttons if you want them. Thread to sew it together. Cheaper if you get stuff on sale. This assumes you have a sewing machine. Again getting it done professionally will add $30-50.
>>994298
What Materials do I need exactly?
I've only been once at a tailor,
only because of some holes in my jeans.
So, will I have to bring the materials with me?
For the size,
I guess I measure my body at home, right?
I have many secreted audio files that I have been working diligently to enhance, decipher, etc, I need tips, help, advice, I'm doing only on my cell phone, note 4, so what's best apps for this. Also budget is low at the moment. As in nonexistent. Been using free only. I really need to know if I can separate vocals and elimate one set and eliminate background noise. Any help or advice welcome. Pic is me.
>I'm doing only on my cell phone
Get a real computer, hopefully you have a decent set of headphones at least?
Even as dumpster dive find with a Pentium 4 would probably work.
>>994179
Not sure, but I think you are asking to much to a cell phone. On computer, you can DL audacity, free and convinient
