Alright guys, it's been a long time coming but now we're officially going to critically examine Slott's Spider-Man from start to finish. Currently, the plan is to start with Amazing Vol. 1 and continue until the end of Clone Conspiracy.

I've checking out a couple posting orders online and I've also decided to include supplementary series where applicable. Which means I can either just include the tie ins when necessary, or I can really go crazy and Storytime basically the entire Spider Universe (Venom, Scarlet Spider, Avenging, Superior Team Up). I agree that Avenging 15.1 onward and Superior Team Up should definitely be included but it's your choice if I should include the entirerty of the other series.

Starting up we got Amazing Spider-Man #648, the debut issue in an arc called "Big Time". Little did we suspect just how off the beaten path Slott would decide to take this series. We didn't know....we just didn't know...

Slott is so shitty the storytime can't even get beyond two images

I don't miss Wolverine in the Avengers like at all.

Spidey joining them feels a bit more earned, but I feel like Bendis went the wrong way about it, he should have joined the Avengers proper, not the "New" (underground) Avengers. Also, OMD ruined all the momentum he had going anyway.

Is Ramos a worse artist than Liefeld?

>>90201737
I think it's because I remember when Gargan Venom first appeared in Millar's Marvel Knight's Spider-Man. Eventually he was recruited into Osborn's team of cronies and that's when he really starts to shine. His portrayal in Amazing Spider-Man: American Son was hysterical. Marjorie Liu managed to make him a fun side character in her Dark Wolverine Series. Bendis even managed to have fun with him in his Dark Avengers run, but I maintain that Brian Reed's 4 issue Sinister Spider-Man story was enough to leave me begging for more.

This is when I got wise to the Slott train of thought. He lies about everything. Do no not trust his interviews with websites. Do not believe a single word he says. We will get what we want. They just take time. an entire year it took. But he gave us a true return for Roddy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! Phil did two things wrong.
1st. He didn't check to see if Nora was in a relationship.
2nd. He should have kept it for himself and brought it to the bugle, increasing his notoriety and social value. Giving it to her is doing her a favor which in turn increases the amount of affection/intimacy you have with someone. Phil, you're making yourself miserably by acting like a goddamn retard.
I came out of a bad breakup a little over a year ago and I see a lot of shitty behaviors present in Phil that were present in me.

I was one of the ten or twelve people who bought every issue of Phil's solo series back in the day. While it sucks to see his descent into villainy, I can't not be happy to see him getting some spotlight time for the first time in nearly 20 years here.

Little bit of a rant, but here's my thoughts on SLott. When it comes to Slott's Spider-Man epic, I'm not going to say the series is particularly well written. You will never ever ever ever ever get those words to come out of my mouth (I have a couple images saved to remind me how bad Slott is). But even in spite of my distaste for the man, I still admit that I love his stories and find him a highly entertaining writer. With Slott, each major story arc from the beginning of his series to the current successively builds on the preceding one that came before. In a sens, he's continuously upped the stakes the longer he's stayed on and every major event fully takes advantage of the surrounding context.

You couldn't have had Spider-Island without Big Time. You couldn't have Superior without Ends of the Earth and Dying Wish. You couldn't have Spider-Verse without the Superior Time Travel Shenanigans THAT WERE SHOWN IN THE MAIN SERIES WAY AHEAD OF TIME!!!! And you couldn't have Clone Conspiracy without Ock getting his PHD and founding his company, with Peter later manages the company in such a way it prosper becoming a competitor for Stark!!! He knows how to lay the groundwork for his stories in ways few writers ever fully grasp. He jams as much content as feasible in his comic pages to ensure you never leave bitter the story didn't progress.

Lastly, when Slott is sufficiently motivated and has a good editor overlooking him he's capable of writing some truly unique characters. Look at his Great Lakes Avengers or his Mighty Avengers and you'll see a full ensemble of characters with distinct voices and personalities.

It's a short enough read and isn't bad in itself. It's a kick in the teeth if you're attached to any of the characters that suffer what could seem like needless tragedy.

It's not Ultimatum levels of shit.

Don't be such a cynic. It's way more entertaining this way than if he'd put actual technobabble in there. He was doing a joke, and I think it's pretty cute.

It's even worse than Ultimatum because at least Ultimatum ruined a small self-contained universe separate from the larger Marvel U. Identity Crisis utterly ruined the DCU and heralded an era of grimdark bullshit and character assassination everywhere that wouldn't stop until fucking Convergence.

The worst part of that was how it wasn't really Slott forcing his hand at making Phil a villain so much as other stuff (like Cebulski's) were already putting him on that path, but at least having the notoriety of killing a big shot villain to become the new one would make the tradeoff worth it IMO.

Of course Kingsley's creator pedigree assures he will never get killed but just run the fuck away at the first sign of trouble and he'll forever be pointless in my eyes.

Best Hobgoblin was in AXIS Hobgoblin. Sabretooth and Havok be damned, his was the one that should have been permanent.

Flash, you would have been a fantastic Spider-Man, but someone's gotta redeem the name Venom and that person is you. In fact, I think it'd be cool of Flash was a member of The Dark Avengers as either team leader or one of the senior members if that series ever comes back again.

Dark Avengers Dream Team. I'm aiming for 6 members.
>Flash Thompson (Spider-Man)
>John Walker (Captain America - if there can be two Captain Americas, why not 3?)
>Karla Sofen (Ms. Marvel)
>Ghost (Iron Man -- this is one of my more outlandish ideas).

>Eric Josten (Giant Man)

Her, Michelle, and Carlie just came off really annoying during BND and part of Slott's run. I think it's probably notable that, after OMD, the only non-MJ/non-Felicia/non-Betty love interest that fans wanted for Peter by a significant number was Carol Danvers.

>>
Slott's run seems to rely a lot on going through all of Spider-Man's lore. After Spider-Verse, I thought he would wind down, but then he did Clone Conspiracy. He seems to love the stories of "Everyone is __________", like how Spider-Island is everyone is Spider-Man, Spider-Verse involves every Spider-Man, and Clone Conspiracy is bringing back all dead characters. With rumors of a Venomverse, I really wonder how much longer he can milk this franchise. I wouldn't be shocked if there was a second Spider-Verse where every version of his rogues gallery from all dimensions team up to stop Spider-Man.
>>
>>90206468
He did do this a few times. Killed Marla, killed Ashley Kafka, "killed" Silver Sable. And then going beyong the killing part, he had Ock punch out Felicia Hardy which made her "evil".

And Remender got shit on for less.

I think he's actually talking about when Sam slept with Jet Zola. People called him a sick fuck and asked for Marvel to fire him because apparently Jet was "underage" (she wasn't, she was a fully grown adult, I have no idea where they got the idea that she was underage)

I MEAN LOOK AT IT! Coipel was capable of elevating even Slott's polarizing writing. Imagine how kickass it would be when paired with a truly consistent writer.

Thanks, OP, I really appreciate the effort. This is going to be great.
>>
So far so good OP. This seems like a pretty decent set of Spider-Man stories. Are Slotts other stories legit? All I ever here people talk about is his a Spider-Man work, but I know he also wrote Mighty Avengers, Silver Surfer, Great Lakes Avengers, and She Hulk. I have zero experience with any of them but I am most interested in she hulk
>>
>>90207929
Slott won't be leaving anytime soon. Zdarsky new spectacular run might save us.
>>
>>90209295
His she hulk is great although I've noticed many on /co/ have turned on the series.

I loved Mighty Avengers and the Initiative. I'm interested in his Silver Surfer.

>>90206791
Sable will come back for the upcoming arc. She was "killed" in a way that left it ambiguous (and of course, Rhino came back so it was likely she'd come back, too)

In the original 1980s comics, having brainwashed henchmen impersonate him was just one of many things the Hobgoblin did. Thanks to fan-nostalgia, and it also being the explanation for why he wasn't Ned Leeds, and wasn't dead, it's become one of the main parts of his gimmick. Back in the 1980s he always got away because if he didn't, the mystery of "who is the Hobgoblin?" would be over. Now he's just become Prep-Time: The Character, so always gets away because it's what he does.

Both of the other Hobgoblins were more developed as characters with actual motivations and personalities, but this guy will always be more popular, for being there first, and for being the guy that always gets away with it.

And that's the weirdest thing; unless a villain can make a credible argument for having been Right All Along, you normally expect readers to want to see the villain get some kind of comeuppance. A villain who just kills and steals and gets away with it and doesn't even take a beating in person, or go to prison until it's time for him to be in a comic again, there's something just weird about how much fans love this guy continuing to get away with it.

Even allowing for the fact that the following issue killed Captain America, then blew up the Earth, and made everyone realise the deaths were going to be undone shortly, here's your reminder that Brevoort appeared to be incapable of understanding why readers were so upset about Rogue and Wanda being brutally murdered, and was more concerned that Wonder Man died as well and readers didn't care about that.
>>
>>90200192
Kind of weird to skip all the Spider-Man stories that Slott wrote from Brand New Day forward.
>>
>>90211538
>and was more concerned that Wonder Man died as well and readers didn't care about that.

Sometimes I wonder if Brevoort really believes the things he writes because that was about as believable as Fantastic Four being canceled solely for low sales.

>You got to impersonate the government's top cop
>There's a word for that, Electro. "Treason". A hanging offense.

Do writers just not know what treason is? I saw this same problem after Dark Reign. Treason is a crime with strict requirements
>Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Impersonating a government official isn't treason.
More importantly, the Chameleon is RUSSIAN, he's not an American, making it even dumber.
Also, remember that time the Chameleon tried to become president by impersonating Obama at his inauguration?

Pretty much. I'm aware of the whole switcheroo and how they bent their back to let Stern get his way, and the mini-series where they reveal it's Kingsley is one of the worst reads I've come across.

It's a continuity appendix first and a narrative third.
>>
>>90211956

It really is that bad. After all the hype and build-up, the final battle last about 2 or 3 pages, and he was unmasked as a Literally Who? Kingsley hadn't appeared in almost a decade before that miniseries, so most of the current readers didn't know or care who he was, and the identical twin explanation for how he could be in two places at once is just awful.

It's also odd how the comics ignored the more lucrative concerns of character-licensing and merchandising and killed off the Jason Macendale Hobgoblin so permanently, and replaced him with a character who then went into limbo for almost 15 years until Slott brought him back, when even to this day, almost every action figure of the Hobgoblin is clearly Macendale, not Kingsley (the packaging often claims otherwise, but the tattered cape, the demon face, none of that was Kingsley).

On that note, Macendale's death made no sense at all, it's written as if he was just a powerless normal guy. But everyone was so happy to get the first Hobgoblin back that this just gets ignored.

But while that kind of "continuity alteration" comic always tends to read like crap, they tend to get a free pass from fans if it's doing things the fans want.

Comics like this, or Avengers Forever, get a free pass, and even get acclaimed, for the writer acting like a real-world Superboy Prime, and "fixing everything" by breaking whatever they don't like, while someone like John Byrne does the same kind of "I'm putting it all back like it's supposed to be" approach to stories and characters people actually love, so he suffers a fan-backlash for it.

God this was just several years ago and I already miss these times when Slott's writing was bearable
>>
>>90212302
Life of Reilly pretty much sort of confirms they were just doing it to get in Stern's good graces and since the market was also shrinking hard at the time of that mini-series, it really shows they were just going to break their backs to try to earn some lip service back with a respected creator, the fact the actual story is a complete crud be damned.

Also funny how they basically set up a Kingsley appearance in a Spider-Man Unlimited before this and they thought that'd have been "enough" to put him back in the running. The guy literally shows up, gets called out by Jameson for disappearing and leaves.

>Maximum velocity

I'm actually impressed both that Slott gave this some thought and that he's writing Mac as being clever enough to grasp the concept as well.
>>
>>90216131
It's ironic that Mac says that considering that is exacty how he died in Spider-Man Reign. He was kicked out of a multi story building and didn't quite have armor in the same league as here.
>>
>>90205661

It's a weird gimmick but I genuinely enjoy these little flashbacks to early Spider-Man adventures the way they're executed here.
>>
>>90205756

I would have loved to have seen or heard the conversation between the writer and artist as they figured out how this floor thing was going to work. It's pretty visually complex and specific.

I do have all of the OMD issues but I feel if I was going to do that, I should have just started with OMD and continued on and SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many of those stories are hit or miss. It isn't really until issue 600 that things start to get back on track and even some of those stories are downright awful.

I think he gets off fans getting ticked. He SOOOO was wanking it with me. Everytime I'm at a con and visiting the Marvel booth he'll point me out, start trash talking. Last one was him going about this story of him and Roger Stern having lunch then the later saying, "Only a fool would think Kingsley could be killed off that easily."
>>

>He lies about everything. Do no not trust his interviews with websites.

I think once he tried too hard to push the claim that Superior was permanent I decided not to read any more of his interviews. It just sounded so desperate.

Marla at least he brought back and gave her a somewhat respectful death. Kafka? Killed off panel and we only see the body. He didn't even bring her back. Nope he had Massacre just kill her. End of story. Da fuck?

Not at all. She was the best new character to come. Out of BND. And creating her is another reason why Joe Kelly is based. It's a shame Nora hasn't shown up in any issues lately.

Less than Michelle. And Michelle was a C.U.N.T. She probably have her photo in a dictionary with the definition. At least, Nora wasn't boring and forced like Carly. All that goblin arc would make much more sense if Peter was dating Nora.

Seriously, I really hate Phil's character in that entire run. Just sounds he goes full villain only because Slott need a non-Osborn goblin.

> Kingsley shows up and leaves.

Um every member of that Club Jonah and Kingsley were a part of (also previous suspects of being the Hobgoblin) showed up in that issue and "leaves".

To say that Macendale had more "character" than Kingsley is a farce. Macendale was a joke character. A jobber who ruined the moniker of a villain who was the arch-nemesis of Spider-Man through the 80s.

It's funny after re-reading the Hobgoblin Saga how blatant Stern had Kingsley be the Hobgoblin when it was right smack in our faces in the very cover.
>>
>>90229351

Then you have poor tastes in Goblins dear anon. Sorry.

>With rumors of a Venomverse

Slott is probably not going to be writing that. It's more likely that Mike Costa is going to be the main writer on that, since he's the writer for the current Venom series. Which is I feel well about either. I worry about Costa writing something on that big of a scale. His writing in the current Venom series isn't really inspiring confidence. And while Venom is the only work by him that I've read, I've seen what other people have said about his other work (like Web Warriors for instance) and it's ranged from mixed to negative.
>>
>>90230744
I don't Costa has ever written a book that wasn't "meh" at best. Most of his stuff is complete shit.
