Leaving the apartment now. Should be home fairly soon as I'm not grabbing food on the way. Sends bumps in the meantime to ensure this thread doesn't die.

If that one guy posts a page or two while I'm hoofing it home (probably say something that includes Muslims or midgets), I wouldn't be opposed. See you kool kats soon!

Weeeeeeeew lad, no offense but those are some pretty awful influences to have.

>Millar
Juvenile, edgy hack who got carried by Morrison and nowadays only does pitches movies, so other writers can "fix" his stories. Ellis did "widescreen comics" 100x better than him, and he didn't let him become a fixture in his work, only applying it whenever necessary (compare The Authority's cinematic approach to The Wild Storm's Watchmen-like layouts) unlike Millar who overuses the fuck out of the widescreen approach because deep down he wants to be a screenwriter, not a comic book writer.

>Casey
Eerily similar to Millar in that he can also be juvenile and edgy, but Casey's main problem is that he's so far up his ass he can smell his own farts. Casey could be a promising writer, but he almost always botches his own concepts with his pretentious bullshit. He's also so far removed from reality he sees the idea of one of his protagonists raping his own boss' wife is "morally ambiguous" at worst because the dude just really hated his boss.

(Cont.)

>Bendis
Easily the worst in your list by far, Bendis is a one-trick pony, who got famous because of his "snappy" (gimmicky) dialogue and "inventive" (childish) plots. He can be a good writer but he's become too lazy and self-indulgent to do so, instead relying over and over on the cheap gimmicks that made him famous. He also likes breaking other people's toys because he's a petty asshole.

>Ewing
The most decent writer in your list, but that's not saying much. In many ways, he's the exact opposite of every other writer here: he's not a wannabe screenwriter like Millar, he's not a pretentious idiot like Casey, and he's not a gimmicky dick like Bendis. Problem is, he's not exactly as revolutionary as those three, in fact, his stuff is as generic as they come. His layouts are unimpressive, his ideas are honestly, pretty overdone, his dialogue is a bore. His respect for continuity is admirable, but sometimes you gotta shake things up a little bit, this is how writers like Morrison made it big, heck, this is how the superstar writers of today made it big: without Uncanny X-Force, Remender would be pretty unknown still, without Hawkeye, Fraction would be a nobody, without Young Avengers, Gillen would have never found his audience.

Frankly, I don't know how good a writer you are, but I'm a little scared you're taking the wrong lessons from these people, and even more so I'm scared you'll succeed and become a professional Big Two writer.

Also, sorry for posting this here, but the thread had died when I saw this post of yours.

Lol those aren't the only influences. Just the one's that pop into mind.

I'm a fan or Morrison but I find his dialog lacking and many of his plots to be a mixture of convoluted and deceptively simple. I'd take a few "big ideas" from him but he isn't really a style I'd want to emulate.

Ellis is another influence, specifically with his heavy emphasis on the blending of sci-fi and the otherwordly. Also I like him because he's a fan of done in ones and I believe mastering that will allow for a much better pacing as well as ensuring every issue is "complete".

>Moore
The biggest influence I pulled from Moore is his tendency to overwrite his scripts to ensure a minimal amount of info will be lost in translation to the artist. Moore is also a big man of methodically plotting out his stories to the point of masochistic but god damn does he have an understanding of the medium.

>Ennis
He's an extremely crass writer with an ability to inject heart and humor in even the most dour and hopeless of scenes. He's capable of writing more than four basic character archetypes but he tends to stay in his little niche hole of war, sex, and violence. Huge fan of chronicles of Wormwood.

>Jonathan Hickman
Dude knows how to world build as well as introduce some pretty out there concepts while still making them easily accessible (this could be a negative for some). He characters tend to suffer occasionally from sameness but if he's invested in the title he's capable of being with the best (Red Mass for Mars, Pax Romana, Manhattan Projects, East of West).

>Lol those aren't the only influences. Just the one's that pop into mind.
Well, they are, quite frankly, terrible influences if I'm being honest (I'm not even sure how one can be inspired by Ewing, dude is never going to make it big if he keeps writing like he does)

>I'm a fan or Morrison but I find his dialog lacking and many of his plots to be a mixture of convoluted and deceptively simple. I'd take a few "big ideas" from him but he isn't really a style I'd want to emulate.
G-Mozz was just an example, I'm not saying you should be influenced by him instead. At the end of the day, whether I disagree or not, it's your choice, for better or worse.

>Also I like him because he's a fan of done in ones and I believe mastering that will allow for a much better pacing as well as ensuring every issue is "complete".
OK, see, this is a better influence to have. If you let the decompressed meme get the better of you you'll end up another Bendis that makes issues one can breeze through in like two minutes.

Anyway, like I said, it's your prerogative.

Those are better influences, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure having other writers influence your writing that much is a good idea. You should be a fresh voice in comics, not just "Moore meets Bendis" or whatever, otherwise you won't make it far, because in the future other writers won't be influenced by you (which I feel is exactly Ewing's problem, he's not unique enough)

WHich peeps would you argue influence you?

Joe Kelley
>He's capable of writing both off the wall characters that will have you in stitches and then shift to a bleak and engaging story that will leave you gripped to your seat. The fact that he can go from Amazing Spider-Man to I Kill Giants to Grim Hunt to Deadpool emphasizes his versatility and adaptability.

I definitely try to have a unique voice in comics but the common criticism I keep getting is that they can tell I'm the one who wrote it and I can't quite tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

No one, I'm not a writer nor do I wish to be. I do, however, have a friend who wants to be an artist and tries really hard to emulate Bruce Timm's style. It honestly looks terrible, but I do believe that if he tried to be more original and less derivative, his art would look a thousand times better. It's the same thing here, I don't know you, but you seem like a nice guy and want you to succeed, however it has to be on your own terms.

>>90116141
Definitely a bad thing. A Moore script is not a Bendis script is not a Gaiman script. Try writing without any of those other writers in mind, let their influences come to you naturally and do your own thing. You may end up with something magical.

This exchange made me laugh. In my opinion Bendis can still write snappy fun dialog when he wants to. He just has to be suitably invested.

Also, to anyone reading would it be preferred that I post Ultimate Spider-Man by Bendis (up to Death of Spider-Man) or post the Slott Spider Epic (Starts with Big Time and ends Clone Conspiracy)?

Conway's Spidey Marriage Book made the real top ten Slott's Clone Saga 2.0 didn't. The reign of Slott will end soon.

I like the cut of your jib. That said, I'm actually kinda excited for Slott's run. It's definitely groan worthy in parts to say it's a completely unenjoyable run is a disservice to it. In some parts it is actually a stupid spider thrill ride that runs loudly and proudly with it's stupid pants on and it's all the more endearing because of it. Slott's Epic isn't for everyone (or even most people), but you can't say it isn't made with love from its creator that obviousy is trying to leave his mark in the Spider legacy. All in all, this era is going to be very uniquely remembered

Also it keeps saying upload failed and I don't know what to doooooooooooooooooo

Bill "CIA" Wilson: [to three prisoners] The flight plan I just filed with the agency lists me, my men, Dr. Pavel here but only one of you! First one to talk gets to stay on my aircraft!
[grabs a hood]
Bill "CIA" Wilson: Who paid you to grab Dr. Pavel?
[No answer, Bill "CIA" Wilson fires his gun away from the prisoner's head]
Bill "CIA" Wilson: He didn't fly so good!
[pulls the hood back into the plane]
Bill "CIA" Wilson: Who wants to try next?
[grabs another prisoner]
Bill "CIA" Wilson: Tell me about Bane! Why does he wear the mask? A lot of loyalty, for a hired gun!
Bane: Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shOOt a man, before throwing him out of a playne?
Bill "CIA" Wilson: At least you can talk. Who are you?
Bane: It doesn't matter who we areee, what mattersh is our plan.
[Bill "CIA" Wilson removes the hood]
Bane: No one cared who I wash until I put on the mask.
Bill "CIA" Wilson: If I pull that off, would you die?
Bane: It would be extremely painful.
Bill "CIA" Wilson: You're a big guy!
Bane: For you.
Bill "CIA" Wilson: Was getting caught part of your plan?
Bane: Of coursh! Dr. Pavel refused our offer in favor of yoursh, we had to find out what he told you.
Dr. Pavel: Nothing! I said nothing!
Bill "CIA" Wilson: Well, congratulations! You got yourself caught! Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Bane: Crashing this plane... with no shurvivorsh!

So how does everyone feel about Bendis' other titles. I'm going to rank them to the best of my ability on a 1-10 scale (5 is AVERAGE).

>Avengers Dissasembled
6/10 - An intersting first introduction to Bendis that is polarizing to this day. In one fell sweet he decimated the team.
>New Avengers Vol. 1
9/10 - I'm a fanboy and I adore this series. It changes with the eras and manages to constantly switch up the cast and character arcs. Probably his best Avengers
>Daredevil Vol. 2 #26-81 (main arc)
10/10 - LOVE IT!
>Mighty Avengers #1-20
4-6/10 - Very variable.
>Secret Invasion
5/10 - It feels very half assed.
>Dark Avengers Vol. 1
8/10 - I love Bendis' take on Osborn and his cronies. It's a definite step down from Ellis but I feel that you can tell Bendis was having fun.
>Siege
7/10 - An event that doesn't pretend to be anything more than an action romp.
>Avengers Prime
3/10 - Avoid.
>Avengers Vol. 4
7/10 - Not as bad as everyone says it is. It definitely as it's ups and down but I feel it's overall a decent set of stories that stand up well.
>New Avengers Vol. 2
4/10 - Sister series to Avengers and it shows. Not great.
>Avengers vs. X-Men
6/10 - I think I need a re-read.
>Avengers Assemble #1-6
2/10 - Fuck you Bendis.
>Moon Knight
8/10 - I appreciate the unique take on Moon Knight. Did it all work, fuck no. Did he tell an intersting story with Moon Knight taking on Nefaria? Hell yeah
>All New X-Men
1/10 - Uneccesary
>Uncanny X-Men
6/10 - Better than expected
>Guardians of the Galaxy
5/10 - I read it as Power Rangers in Spcae and I take it for what it is.
>Alias/Jessica Jones
8/10 - Unique take of a nobody superhero facing her fears and slightly growing as a person.
>Age of Ultron
5/10 - I wanted an post apocalyptic Ultron story and I got time traveling Wolverine and alternate dimensions. It's...intersting.
>Civil War II
3/10 - Bendis what the fuck are you doing?
>>
>>90122047
Benis is garbage and i don't read his shit.
>>
>>90122047
Last ones.

>Powers
9/10 - I love Bendis playing around with Superhero tropes. He has an fairly fast timeline and an established chronology that constantly incorporates throwbacks. He's capable of making me adore some characters while despising others and I feel that's the sign of a good writer.
>Brilliant
4/10 - If it had kept going it would have been so much more.
>Goldfish
?/10 - I read it YEARS ago and I only vaguely remember.
>Jinx
?/10 - I read it YEARS ago and I only vaguely remember.
>Torso
?/10 - I read it YEARS ago and I only vaguely remember.
>Scarlet
2-6/10 - I love the art, but HATE the main character. I understand her plight and empathasize with her loss, but she is goddamn insufferable and I bet she masturbates to herself in the mirror because she loves herself that fucking much.
>United States of Murder
5/10 - Bendis has established he can write crime stories but he meanders in this one.

--Ultimate Series

>Ultimate Fantastic Four
7/10 - A definite step in the right direction for the formation of the Ultimate Universe. Nothing groundbreaking, but fun.
>Ultimate Spider-Man (Peter)
10/10 - Easiy my favorite set of Spider-Man issues. The consistent artists (Bagley, Immonem) were godly, every villain gets their due (especially Osborn and Venom), Bendis brought me to tears on more than one occassion, and he genuinely made me love the characters. Also, Bendis wrote the script to the amazing Spider-Man video game and that thing was baller as hell.
>Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles)
6/10 - It could be so much more. Miles has potential. He's just held back by Bendis.
>Ultimate X-Men
7/10 - I feel Millar was carrying him but I enjoyed the issues.
>Ultimate Origins
2/10 - A retroactive piece of garbage that shouldn't have been made.
>Ultimate Doomsday Trilogy
6/10 - Altogether, an intersting story of the beginnings of Evil Reed.
>Spider-Men
8/10 - Straight up fan service...I like it.
>Ultimate Fallout
Do you need a hug right now/10
I bawled like a baby.
>>
>>90117802
this has got to be my favourite story arc out of all of them but the last part (crazy mom post scientist confession) has always been confusing to me.

like what the fuck is >>90117512 green man here supposed to be. how did pissed of mom summon the natural disaster and the jolly green giant? was it magic? is the bullshit about old gods true? did they bring this down? they say it's not aliens since walker gets kicked out of the millennium for powering up so seriously what is is it?

but yeah before mum goes nutty it was one of my favourite arc's.
>>
>>90121633
discuss powers shit i guess.

how many times are they gonna pull the "Walkers is out of the police no wait let's get him back in again"?

they've done it like 3-4 times.
>>
>>90122128
Really? You don't like any of his titles? While I find it hard to believe you can't find just one of his comics to enjoy I still see your reasons for finding him distasteful. He has a very distinct writing style that is understandably not for everyone.

>>90122893
You bring up a lot of very intersting points and unfortunately I don't have an answer. I think the mom was naturally more in tune with her godly powers which made her more than just an average supes. She literally had the power of a god and could both creature natural disasters as well as summoning the jolly green giant (well said). I think there is some truth in what she said, it had been established there are otherwordly forces even from the beginnings of man with Gorrilla Walker. Magic gods are certaintly not out of the question.
Millennium Guard Walker will be missed.

Favorite Iterations of Walker
1. Diamond
2. Powers Division
3. Gorra
4. Undercover Walker
5. Millenium Guard Walker (Vol. 3 raised him in the list.
6. Blue Streak
7. Gorilla Walker
8. Vlad the Impaler

>>90122936
Too many damn times. If anything I'd like to see a series where Walker and Triphammer bro it out and go on adventures. I hate that Walker is more/less tethered at the hip to Deena and she is such a swing and a miss character I can't stand it.

Rank Powers Volumes.
1. Volume 1.
2. Volume 3.
3. Volume 2
4. Powers Bureau
5. Volume 5 (even though we haven't gotten there).

Also does anyone have any criticisms for the provided Bendis list? Anything you agree, disagree, or think I'm out of my goddamn mind? I'd be more than willing to hear your thoughts.
>>
>>90122128
bendis hating is a meme at this point. i may not agree with some of the shit he's done recently but that doesn't mean he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. powers is one of my favourites.

if you dislike him for the new iron man being a black woman keep in mind that pretty much all of marvel is trying to do that, make new characters minorities who are quite different from the original characters. it started with miss marvel (Which wasn't too bad and i kinda liked since they didn't bang on about how she was muslim every sentence). and then when marvel saw how much cash they were making from people who were buying it because of "muh progressive", well.

also how long do you guys think the image fuckery is going to last for?
>>
>>90123015
although i will say riri is a fucking stupid name.
>>
>>90123015
Hopefully not too much longer. I'm periodically testing as I post.

Also I forgot to add two more Bendis titles.

>Invincible Iron Man (Tony)
4/10 - Not as bad as I wish it was but a SIGNIFICANT step down from Superior Iron Man which was written by Tom Taylor.
>International Iron Man
2/10 - Basically the Mighty Avengers of Iron Man
>Infamous Iron-Man
7/10 - I'm actually really enjoying this series. Not sure why.
>Invincible Iron Man (Riri)
Did not read and do not plan on it. Maybe if I start hearing some recommendations I'll give it a shot but so far it doesn't seem like it.

>>90123042
Damn straight. I feel like that was a name introduced at a board that everyone despised but no one wanted to call out for fear of looking racist.
>>
>>90123011
also was the natural disaster a byproduct of summoning the grinch on steroids? (like she summoned greenie and that caused the disaster as well?)

it just baffles me because they've explained more complex things in other arcs but this one is kinda ambiguous. it is the only thing that i don't understand and it pisses me off to this day.

you have a good explanation though

since we're going to keep the powers discussions rolling, what did you guys think of the 2015 relaunch? i thought it was alright but they brought back fucking walker being out of the game and needing to join the force (again).

also nice dubs
>>
>>90123186
i couldn't help but notice they put a lot more grill characters in the relaunch as "main" characters.

>sunrise
>deena
>the coroner got replaced by the slightly odd yet charming chick
>walker is busy banging whores and drinking
>>
>>90123011
>>90123111
>dubs followed by trips

fucking hell lad
>>
>i might actually have to start discussimg comics on /co/

I hope they fix this shit soon.
>>
>>90123322
Look at you bra!

>>90123186
>it just baffles me because they've explained more complex things in other arcs but this one is kinda ambiguous
You'd think that for someone who's known for flimsy writing and terrible characterizations in certain titles, he would have just pulled something out of his ass and called it a day. Maybe he cared so much about this comic that he purposely decided to leave it ambiguious because he knew he'd shit the bed.

>>90123227
Weirdly, the cornor in the TV show got replaced a by a chick in Season 2 but he came back later. Deena I'm begrudingly accepting of. Sunrise I straight up despise because of her sense of entitlement.

>>90123416
You wanna post buddy? Wanna talk about some Bendis? The writer?

>Popular Favorite Titles
Daredevil
Ultimate Spider-Man (Peter)
Powers

>"Worst" Titles
Age of Ultron
