Baltic exchange dry index on the rise?
What do you anons think? This represents the state of the shipping market and if it rises we can expect shipping companies to do better, This should also boost stocks in shipped goods like oil, and gold.
Thinking of taking some risks with me in the shipping sectors?

Consider the following:

In all seriousness, the PMI is out Tuesday night, so I'd buy anything shipping and look for a big upturn on Wednesday. Consensus is unreasonably bearish after a big miss last month.

Me again, bar wifi

The Economist just published this on their espresso app:
>Too many ships, too little freight. That is the problem facing shipowners and operators as they gather in Brussels today for European Shipping Week. Since the financial crisis, the Baltic Dry Index—a measure of bulk-freight rates—has fallen by 93%. Prices for transporting containers have sunk as much on some routes. In 2008 sending a 20-foot box from China to Brazil cost $2,000; now the price is as low as $50. As a result, the industry is awash in red ink. Even Maersk Line, with the lowest costs in the business, lost $367m in 2016. Some see salvation in embracing digitisation to reduce costs. But the main problem is overcapacity. Bigger firms are building huge vessels to force more inefficient operators to scrap theirs. Some are doing just that (see chart). But many smaller owners, and the banks that lent to them, are hanging on for dear life. The storm shows no sign of abating.

They're late to the party, but a lot of people read this, so expect an even larger reversal once we see some positive catalysts in the coming days and weeks. Full steam ahead.

nice thread

im trying to get a business loan from the bank.

My partners and I are out of school and had no debts at the time the business was created, now we do.

We have no assets so to get the loan it was suggested to us that we should make one of our fathers into a business partner so because their assets would increase our chances. Our fathers are fully aware and are willing to voluntarily leave the business once we are approved.

My plan is to get the loan approved by making one of our fathers an owner and then proceed to fire them from the business after getting approved for the loan.

Is this possible? what are the drawbacks if any?

If you default on the loan. Fathers are still held liable. You firing them has no effect on the contract with the bank.

I'm going to be buying single family homes in either Portland or Seattle suburbs.

I really preferred the amount of Asians, Indians , Arabs in fancy Seattle suburbs. They reminded me of super high appreciation areas in the bay area like San Jose Cupertino and Palo Alto.

I'm in Portland scouting it out, and it is ghetto as fuck. Instead of rich engineers there are black lives matter posters everywhere, shot loads of dykes, and nu white trash everywhere. Lots of scary black people, no Asian or Indian engineer males in sight.

I went over to southern Washington the towns built by financial advisors, and it was too cookie cutter. Instead of fob Chinese I saw a 3rd generation Chinese girl. I was talking to my dad and making fun of it for trying to be fancy, but so tiny and next to some super ugly industrial paper mill.

How could anyone possibly invest in this nu male, black empowerment city?

Is there a superior Indian Asian engineer suburb?

Hello /biz/- i plan to save up some money to achieve passive income. In doing this, I need to know a few things.

1. What % returns can I realistically expect per year if I invest conservatively?

2. How much should I save up to live comfortably in an ok area? (In long term, inheritance will probably be 500k-1m)

3. Long-term, day trading or a fund?

You'll probably have to invest $1 million just to make 40k a year, pretax.

You're either humblebragging or dumb. Don't ask frogposters important questions.
>>
>>1819785
If you are living off of a pool of investments, with no other income, you generally want to aim at spending under 4% of the total value of the pool per year.
>>
Unless you're retiring soon, you don't want passive income. Grow your net worth instead

Correct me if Im wrong, but this is one of those auction sites.
You can get a good deal if you win, but every bid costs money (60 cents on the one I checked out) With hundreds of people bidding on the item at 60c per bid, they make much more than selling it at regular price.
You might get a good deal or two during hours when people are working.

Let's say hypothetically that humanity unites into one large, star-faring empire at some point in the future. To secure its dominance in the galaxy, humanity begins enslaving aliens for various reasons-
Ego: Much more fun to make aliens your slaves than just plainly exterminate them

Convenience: Much easier to enslave aliens, a labor force right where you need them, than it is to import labor from abroad.

Economics: Slavery of these aliens may be more efficient in some applications than automation.

Now, given that humans would be able to explore the galaxy and maintain an internal slave trade across solar systems, we can assume that most of the competition between free labor and slavery would be a competition between mechanization/automation and using alien slaves. Thus, there would be no political risk from populism about slave labor displacing free labor.

Under a slaveholding system like this, could a nation still be a market economy? That is to say, would economic power become concentrated into the hands of a few major slaveholders, for instance, in the American South, where slavery began to mirror an aristocracy and many pro-slavery intellectuals were opposed to Northern industrial capitalism (George Fitzhugh wrote that slaves were treated better in the South by their owners than workers were treated in the North by factory owners).

So basically, can you have slaves (not counting "wage slavery" meme or convict labor) under capitalism, or will things the system eventually become feudal?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Sure. It's still a market economy, even if it's distorted.
A 'Free Market' is a vague ideal, not a place you can arrive as a society.
>>
>>1819137
We're assuming that this society isn't post-scarcity, but most manual labor is either automated or done by slaves. There's still resource scarcity, but the production of those resources is mostly done by non-humans and humans engage in knowledge or creativity-based fields.

If slaves are cheap and abundant and easy for the population to access, would there still be the emergence of an oligarchy like you saw in the South? I'm not asking about whether there'd just be distortions, but whether the whole market would break down and we'd revert back to feudalism. Under what conditions would we reach that point?
>>
>>1819137
Also, what exactly distorts the market under a slave-based economy? Couldn't enslaving aliens be seen in the same way as domesticating animals if the slaves are primitive?

Obviously, more civilized aliens should not be enslaved if they are capable of higher thought. They wouldn't be motivated to work in that system.
