graduating college in a few weeks and about to start a new job. the company i'm going to work for is giving me 22k$ up front as a sign on bonus and to cover moving expenses.
i have 30k$ in student debt at 4.5% apr.

You can even send your beans here to stake. Basically you get passive free beans for staking. This is btc to posw but same concept just less steps for sending bean to poswallet
1. Make account at https://poswallet.com
2. Use aprest as referral ID (optional I’d appreciate it)
3. Click on dashboard and scroll down till you see BTC
4. Click “generate wallet address”
5. Send BTC to the generated wallet address
6. Wait for confirmation(takes time)
7. Click wallet and transfer BTC from the stacking wallet to exchange wallet
(Should be instant)
8. Click exchange and right next to that is exchange markets
9. Click BTC at the top and then look for posw/btc(6th one down)
10. Once you buy go back to wallets
11. Transfer posw to stacking wallet
12. Sit on it and collect more posw from stacking and monthly dividends

You guys realize Bitcoin is about to crash, right? Bitfinex, the #1 BTC/USD exchange, has disabled fiat withdrawals (they even tried to sue Wells Fargo) and is trading at a $100 price premium because everyone is trying to get their cash out of there by buying Bitcoin.
If Bitfinex becomes insolvent, Bitcoin is going to crash.
Bad time to buy BTC or any alt paired with it, imo. I'm sticking with fiat for a week or so.

Let's get some chatter about actually making money here. What kinds of businesses do you own, /biz/?
I've been considering starting a brick-and-mortar business to get away from my $1k/mo. lifestyle. My brother is a carpenter and wants to start a construction business where I am the "business/networking/office guy" and he swings the hammer. He'd like to go commercial immediately and I'm not sure that is such a good idea, because it's tough to re-brand as commercial from residential.
Are there any anons in construction here? What do you recommend in terms of bidding on commercial jobs? What is your process?

True, but he has like 5 years of experience and not actually a licensed journeyman so that may be an issue. Never went through an apprenticeship program but I'm betting he'd pass an exam easily.

Banks just don't seem the best option to me, since most of them (if not all) have returns at < 1% and/or utter absurd investment conditions...

Banks are just for very low risk and very low return.
For semi-low risk and semi-low return, you can go with a mutual fund with a local broker or do it online (greater return online usually)
For higher risk and higher return, do what the anon above me said.

Is that taking the spread into account?
PMs aren't really investments, they're a hedge. If you're going to have them, you should have them in addition to stock, not instead of stock.

I have around $1500 to play with and it seems pretty clear that Bitcoin is only going to rise in value in the long run. Trading the various shitcoins I see on here seems high risk, and retarded in some cases. Is buying BTC to hold and sell a sensible decision?

It is risky and retarded in SOME cases but if you know how to trade in general you can increase the amount of BTC you have.
There are no short cuts. If you suck, you suck and you are better of not trading.
