If not for the American market this thing would have killed Nintendo.

what about handhelds
they've sold a fuckton of those nonstop since the gameboy
>>
>>3774449
I think nintendo has the right idea with the switch being a handheld / console hybrid. But I think they should just go full tilt and go handheld only with a good VC and first party games.
>>
>>3774472
that's what they're doing
it doesn't matter if the switch is too big for pocket size since most people aren't gonna play it outside their house anyways, or they can throw it in womans purse

ITT: Random things / memories that you associate with different games based on what you were doing while playing them. Pic related.

I'll start. Recently, I was playing through Breath of Fire 4, and for whatever reason I started watching a ton of Judge Judy on YouTube. It got to the point where I would even watch other "Judge" shows. Aside from Judge Judy, I really like Judge Jeanine Pirro. So now whenever I think about the game, I automatically associate it with Judge Judy.

tl;dr Judy > Pirro > Fou Lu

I had this babysitter named Lisa when I was a little guy, she would watch my brother and I, take us to the park, put on some of our favorite morning TV shows, made us these peanut butter, raisin, and celery snacks she called ants on a log, and would let us play her NES, I remember BattleToads, and Trog! specifically.

Would be nice knowing what ever became of her. I'm sure she dropped us because my parents were awful, either that or she had some awful habits I never noticed. That always seems to be the way with my family.

I was at a friend's once, playing through super mario world, spent the last couple days of that summer at his house and enjoyed every moment.

Nobody knows. The writing is a clusterfuck in that game.
>>
>>3774194
No, not really. Kind of a douche.

Help me /vr/. I tried to get into jrpgs for some time in the past. But I dropped all of them eventually.

I played:
FF3 DS—dropped after I fucked up with changing jobs, would maybe beat it but didn't enjoy it too much
FF4 DS—was alright, but I just saw no reason to continue after some time
FF6 GBA—dropped around 10 hours in after I felt that the plot lost focus
DQ4 DS—overstretched as all fuck, plot rapes gameplay
DQ5 DS—never learned how to get good monsters and quit it. Might replay
DQ6—actually got quite far in it, but I know that it goes to shit after some time
Phantasy Star 2—just didn't click
Tales of Phantasia—barely even stuck after the start
Chrono Trigger DS—got to the 3D racing part, realized it was too basic and overhyped

Should I give up or play something else? The only jrpg I really liked was DQ3, and Mother 1/2 if that counts. I also did enjoy Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and less so Pokemon, although these are not retro.

Yes you should forget about trying to get into them. It's clearly not a genre that interests you.

Maybe check out an action rpg of some sort, but likely just move on and waste no more time.

I want to know how you guys play your games, and why. Do you use emulators? Are you wildly opposed and only use original hardware? Are you able to function with a happy medium?

I use an emulator for anything that runs well enough on one, even more so if it's portable because I like playing games on the go. I keep hardware around for things that still emulate badly, like most Saturn games.
>>
>>3773489
Emulators are easy to boot up if you don't have a lot of time to play games during the weekday. I think that makes it interesting to use them even if you got the original hardware.
>>
If an LLE emulator exists with high compatability (higan, Mednafen etc), then I emulate on my PC (genesis and NES on my Wii on a CRT). In the case of N64 and 6th gen consoles, I use a flash cart for the former and all real games and hardware for the later.

I've never seen a thread on this series before. Has anyone played all three of them and could give a run down of the series as a whole?

I played through the original and loved it when it came out. It felt really massive in scope for its time and I loved the branching paths for different endings. It just felt like a very rewarding and intense game, especially with the later stages.

I rented the second one but hated it because of its frustratingly higher difficulty and never played the third one.

>>3773015

I've only played the second one, Vengeance and thought it was really hard but very fun. It's a shame there hasn't been anything like it since, and no, that borefest Elite: Dangerous doesn't compete, especially with a name that dumb.
>>
>>3773015
Loved Colony wars back in the day, recently replayed them and unfortunately they've aged like milk.

Before you complain, note that I've recently played Freespace 2 and Star Wars Tie fighter, which came out around the same kind of time (late 90s) and had a blast with them.

How did retro games get revealed to the public in the past? Was it seriously mostly through magazines?

I remember getting most of my info about new and upcoming games from magazines as a kid. We didn't get satellite tv til I was in 7th grade so there may have been TV commercials that I wasn't aware of too.
>>
Magazines. Big name games would have commercials. In-store demos were also used a lot back then.

Also, boxes. Most of the games I got as a kid I picked out because I liked the box art.
