Is there a good guide anywhere on how to mod an NES to be able to play the additional sound channels present in some famicom games?
Also, does anyone know which soundchips are supported by the Everdrive N8 China Version?
Thanks.
Alright I'm sure so some will correct me here but
Pretty sure the japan-only "extra sound channel" cakes were on the Famicom Disk - like Metroid. You're fucked there unless you emulate, because the extra sound channels were enabled through the FDS itself and can't ever be replicated using an NA NES.
The other cart games with extra sound channels, were all just games that had extra chips - aren't the Sunsoft games examples of this? There's a bunch of these in the NA catalog.
Can't help you with the Everdrive shit, totally never looked into that.
Emulating will at least let you hear the shit though. I don't think you're ever going to hear extra Metroid sounds on an American NES.

The everdrive sound support for the FDS games is shit. It works well enough on the supported cartridge games. 47k resistor between pins 3 and 9 of the exp connector on the bottom to enable the cart sound with an everdrive. Also works on famicom carts with an nes adaptor appropriately modified to pass the sound channel through. If you're serious about getting famicom sound, pick up an AV modified original famicom or a famicom AV. Also get an FDS ram adapter and fdsstick. Skip out on the actual FDS unless you hate yourself.

Come on, this is the crudest problem in the world! The only time it wouldn't be is if you're using the bundled RF adaptor.
How did the NES output sound? Out through a single RCA jack. So, with extra sound capabilities coming from the cartridge, assuming it can pull enough power, where is the simplest place to send extra audio signals?
My girlfriend decided to mention she had a box with a couple old video games in it at her parents house...
Wtf?
How many bros would cum to ur gf's house that one nes with two controllers was deemed insufficient? They needed 3 different nes's and 8 controllers???
Ur girl must have been reeeaaaalll popular at school.

If you were to design a RPG, which elements would you respect/break from traditional ones? Would your game require countless hours of grinding?
>>3771420
I'd definitely do it like this:
—Activity-based progression (level up skills through use)
—One big map with no battle screens, with hero being able to travel really fast via vehicles and transport
—Few if any cutscenes and NPC story dumps, all story is told through surroundings
The rest is up to discussion.
>>3771432
>No Combat
> No npc story
What's the point then?. Also, why do you want to travel is there is no danger in the middle?
Leveling by activity is an interesting feature which i appreciate, but it has never been implemented correctly (Ultima Online, FF2)
I would scale my game appropriately to avoid grinding.
FF8 scaled the enemy level in comparison of the players. It was a bad idea because if you grinded to much, the end boss become nearly unkillable.
I think you need a double XP system.
XP for the characters stat, if you grind to much in the same zone, you get nearly nothing.
XP for the job. If you grind too much, you job won't progress enough.
The first island would assume you should be between level 10 and 15 when the boss is killed.
And you job level shouldn't be above 3 out of 15.
When you reach the next zone, it should be able in 30 minutes or so to reach the max job of the previous zone.
Bravely Default was doing this fine in the begin. After 30 minutes you could have nearly full reconfigured your team with a new job.

Anyone else here have a thing for old game guides and artbooks?

I used to collect solely for monetary value.
Here are the oldest ones I have.

>>3782059
Which version should i play?
Original
+More Chapters.
+More Characters.
+Social Knights and Pegasus Knight can use Sword without dismounting.
+Better Music (IMHO)
Remake
+Armor Knights and Snipers can Promote.
+Better Graphics.
+More Story and dialogue.
+You can see the unit's movement range.
>>3781849
>+You can see the unit's movement range.
This is the only one that should be significant enough to influence a decision
Having played both, I enjoyed the original a LOT more because that didn't bother me
But I usually wouldn't recommend it to others most of the time solely because having to manually count each unit's movement range, including enemies, feels really archaic
>+Social Knights and Pegasus Knight can use Sword without dismounting.
This is pretty neat too
That and Manaketes being able to use their stones like regular weapons (3 changed this for the worse) were things that started in 1, got changed, and then were changed back later in the series, so that really tells you that someone on the dev team realized they were better ideas
Really, it goes without saying, but whatever you do just don't play Shadow Dragon
>>3781863
Whats wrong with shadow dragon
Besides the horrible 3D prerendered graphics
>>3781863
Thanks for the answer. I´m going to play the original.
Hey /vr/ I have a question. The games circled are some of the games I used to have until two months ago when my neighbor's daughter stole from me even though I thought we were cool. She stole them and sold them for drugs, and she died almost 3 weeks ago from a heroin overdose (she was 21).
Now my question is that some of them I had since I was little in the early 90s (30 yo) and I emulate here and there but should I make the effort to try to get them psychically again? I know that it'll cost me a lot a money as I go along, so should I save myself the hassle and money by just emulating?
>>3781605
That's what you get for trying to bang your neighbor's daughter, who killed herself through self-destructive behavior after realizing the showers never made her feel clean.
Just get a flash cart, anon.
Just move on. Consider it an idiot tax for associating with degenerates.

To load stuff from the cart to the console. I think Street Fighter Alpha 2 had like a 10 second load time between each match where the characters just stand there there while it loads.
>>3781353
Generally you see loading times when the cartridge had compressed graphics that it needed to decompress into VRAM.
Most games used some form of graphics compression, but some were using more complex compression algorithms which shrunk the compressed size smaller, but took more time to decompress.
Why didn't they just buy large enough memory chips for the carts to store it all decompressed? Larger chips for the carts significantly increased manufacturing costs for cartridges.
lets start. somebody beat mega man 2.5d with roll?

>Over 20 years later
>STILL the best entry in the Doom series
What went so right?
Two full episodes with (fairly) consistent and distinct level style.
>explicit scifi with nominal difficulty
versus
>conceptual abstractions with high difficulty
So no matter what you'll probably like some of the levels. Also, PSX release.
>>3780060
Nah.
DOOM was the best.
Final DOOM on console was a dumbed down version of the DOS versions.
>>3780278
>Final DOOM sucks because I hated the console version
ok.
Reminder that the 32X had the hardware to be a Neo-Geo killer at a way lower price.
Let us know when your $649.99 machine can do this:

>>3779908
32X was already less powerful than the Saturn. The two were released like a week apart, Sega thought the 32X would be an "entry level" console or some shit and the Saturn would be an enthusiast console (surprise: developers didn't want to develop for consoles with a split market so both consoles ended up dying).
Were you originally supposed to play all 4 levels per world in Story Mode?
I've heard that the game was fucked with later in development so younger kids could beat it.
>>3779832
You heard wrong. The game was designed to be easy.
I haven't got a clue, but the challenge in the game is supposed to be eating melons exclusively, it's a bitch trying to find all 30 in each level.
>>3779841
not op here
u sure about that?
Even as kid i best that game in 1 day.
The first boss cant even deal damage you just lick it until it dies.
Yoshis Island was so much better :/
Do I still need to pay a sub to play this old sack of shit online?
On the official servers, yes.
Otherwise. no.
