I diagnosed it immediately when I first saw pics. It's another game made by artists, and not game designers. You can tell they focused a lot on pixel art, rather than actual design which was an after thought. The game is outright boring.

If you're able to appreciate NES games then start with the original and play them in release order. Otherwise start with Zero Mission.

Zero Mission-> Super Metroid -> Fusion -> Prime Trilogy is probably the best way to go about it

The original NES game has aged terribly
You could also sprinkle in bits of MP Trilogy as you play through the 2D games, but DEFINITELY start with Zero Misson

don't pick up 2x damage weapons, try to be thorough or really quick, and try not to lose your head if you get hit, most damage can be neglected if you're fast enough.

80 / 2
= 40 damage on average per turn
1000 / 40 = 25 turns

= (180 - 40) / 16
= (140) / 16
= 8.75 Damage per Turn on Average
500 / 8.75
=57.1428571429 turns on average
Of course this is ignoring the instakill, as it would be a 1/3 chance after a 1/4 chance after a 1/4 chance, which means that it would take 64 hits for it to proc on average.
