I've never played a Metroid game. Which should I start with?

If you're able to appreciate NES games then start with the original and play them in release order. Otherwise start with Zero Mission.

Zero Mission-> Super Metroid -> Fusion -> Prime Trilogy is probably the best way to go about it

This. The NES and Game Boy games are really enjoyable AFTER you're already a fan of the series, as a way of seeing how it all began.

So yeah. Zero Mission then Super Metroid, that's the basis. Then you can play the Prime games and Fusion in any order you like. Prime games are Prequels and Fusion is a sequel to Super.

Then you can go back and enjoy the older titles and spin-offs, like Metroid Pinball and Hunters. Even Federation Force is pretty fun.

The only truly bad game is Other M. I'd play it out of curiosity, but don't go expecting anything good.
