Only if you disallow spellcasters, but playing it would be pretty boring. Fighter-types can't do anything but attack at low levels.

Don't think it would go so well, it gets boring playing a roll to hit most of the time character. The point of rpgs is to play something out of the realm of reality.

Yes with the caveat that keeping things balanced and interesting will be very difficult depending on the edition, so it's often more trouble than it's worth. Pre-5e D&D has magic items all but hard-codes into the system's math, so removing them requires fiddling with the numbers significantly. Most editions also restrict special actions to magic dudes, so unless you're playing 4e or a 5e battlemaster fighter, expect combat to get stale when the frontline fighters start rolling their 300th attack/full attack.

Yes, this can be overcome with clever encounter design, quality storytelling, expansive world building, and an all-around solid group, but ANY system benefits from those, so why work your way up from "shit" to "decent" when you can use an appropriate system to start with and work up from "decent" to "great"?

This is frankly the kind of question you would be better off asking the group, and probably only after getting to know everyone. Personally, I'd say unless you're REALLY good at it and can play softly/subtly I'd just ask you leave the instrument at home. Listening to someone plucking random cords for several hours is pretty obnoxious and distracting.

A few days ago I posted basically a straight-up excerpt from Jorge Luis Borges' "Story of the Warrior and the Captive" and there were replies like 'woah dude that was amazing' and 'better than some published stuff'. Yesterday, I saw some guy retweet a bad sex scene from Book of the New Sun, shorn completely of context, and get hundreds of responses along the lines of 'lol and this won the Nebula award' 'classic sci-fi is terrible'.

So I don't know man. To me it seems like nobody reads fucking anything. I like Tolkien - I had this big Smaug poster I won in a competition when I was 11 on my wardrobe for like 8 years - but most of the shit I read that had a profound impact on me the way Tolkien seems to have had on you, nobody reads. Or people read a blurb/summary and dismiss, or read an article and pretend they've read it. Shit's depressing.

I want to be a totem barbarian but from a roleplaying perspective I really like all the level 1 ranger stuff.

Would it make more sense to start as a ranger and immediately go into barb, or just go with barb for a while and later on justify ranger training somehow?

What happened in your most recent session?

Im a relatively new player and so far I've only played barbarian and fighter briefly. Im now moving onto a more serious character for a campaign and I wanted your input on which class I should pursue.

I was curious about the spell casters (sorc, wiz, warlock) but I really don't know what seperates them or rather the advantages or long term playstyle differences. The Paladin oath of redemption seemed neat too for rp purposes.

What do you guys recommend or think would be a lot of fun? While I don't have to have the most DPR I do want to be a combat asset or at least pretty viable.

a melee weapon is too specialized whereas a standard issue gun is more general purpose.

on a modern battlefield 99.9% of the time one side detects the other at some range beyond dick sucking range. A knife or other melee weapon is useful in those 0.1% of situations but let's not pretend it's as useful as a gun most of the time.

I never claimed it was but it's foolish to think that face to face engagements never happen or there can be some chance that you will be disarmed of your primary weapons.

If you go running across no man's land with a sword thinking you can tank bullets you deserve to be turned into a bullet sponge but I'm not going to "welp, I don't have my guns i guess I'm not going to bother punching this guy to death who really wants to kill me."

Alignments used to be all right back when they just denoted what team you were playing in. Later they were turned into personality tests, which they still are in most games, and that's the root of the problem because they're far too shallow to tell your personality and yet restrict your actions in the exactly right places - like a pair of too large trousers that nonetheless itch in your crack and squeeze at your balls.

Ditch the good-evil axis entirely, keep the law-chaos one to maintain the party relationship with higher powers, and you could get a decent Sword & Sorcery campaign about it. Otherwise, avoid.

It doesn't seem like that bad or annoying a quirk, and results in a bit of emergent inventive and not too serious fun on the DM's part. It will make the quirk feel like a real thing and adds some depth and color to the game.

When player counts his gold it seems like he has more than he really does and when the time comes to pay, he always misses a few coins.

When the player flips a coin, it's always the cursed one if he didn't get rid of it and it always makes him lose/chooses the worst alternative (examples : what path should we take ? The one where the big snakes are hiding.)

I accept that casters are bound to have more options, but the fighting man has no recourse as long as initiative and spellcasting works the way that it does.

1e gets it right by adding spellcasting time onto the initiative score.

You fundamentally misunderstand the problem. Both casters and martials are presented as equally viable options when they aren't. The system outright lies to you, and then you get told to suck it up by casterfags when you make the wrong choice.
