I'm preparing real analysis I using the independently written textbook from a professor in my university.
Until reaching the chapter on limits and continuous functions it wasn't that bad,
but afterwards its just steaming bullcrap as learning material

>proof limit of (g o f)(x)
>the book wants to be edgy and uses a personal definition of limit, not the standard epsilon-delta
>tells me to consider 4 different sets, with at least 6 intersections between them
>"let W = W0 intersect W1"
>doesn't define W0 because lol who cares
>4 intersection later it says "therefore W = W1 qed"
>also "we suggest the reader does the alternate proof as exercise"

I might be a brainlet but for me this is just sloppy and cheap explaining.
So let's have a textbook thread, because how things are written matters.

Reading alternative proofs is so fun, you are just being petty. As long as your professor's book is not meant to be an "official" introduction to the subject then let him be.

First time posting.

>According to different estimates, ants can carry 10 - 50 times their body weight!
>How? Because ants are so small, their muscles have a greater cross-sectional area (they are thicker) relative to their body size than in larger animals. This means they can produce more force pound-for-pound

How? Why do thicker muscles lift more? Does that mean that with the same total muscle mass, the thicker muscle lifts more than the thinner muscle?

Also, I had a thought.
Imagine you could control ants.
Imagine that you have a glass sheet that's 1 square meter, and has a negligible weight. Then imagine putting a bunch of ants under the sheet, lets say the sheet fits 1 million ants directly under it's surface, if ants are 5mm long.
Then if each ant weighs 5 milligrams, it would be able to lift 250 milligrams. In total, the ants would be able to lift 250 million milligrams, or about 550 pounds.

Imagine the possibilities! Here I am in pic related. That could be ANTS carrying me(and a few other people)!

Also, I had a question about entropy. Does entropy work any different in higher dimensions? Thanks.

Entropy diverges more quickly in higher spatial dimensions because it's fundamentally the natural logarithm of the amount of spatial configurations available to a system in a given unit of time. If you add another dimension of space, that number of configurations its particles can be in will rise dramatically.

living systems dont trend toward thermodynamic equilibrium because they can use entropy to sustain themselves by giving it meaning(sensu biosemiotics) and using it for work. this is far different from maximum entropy production in self organizing non-living systems. Its downward causation.

So what are the limits of CRISPR? Can it effectively used on an adult with trillions of cells or is it mostly for embryo use?

you.

Let us try to retrace the origins of our universe (or of anything that existed before our universe came into being). No matter how much thought I put into it I always come to this two alternatives, either:

a) Our universe (or the previous worlds that would ultimately gave birth to our universe) came out of complete nothingness.

b) Our universe (or the previous worlds that would ultimately gave birth to our universe) came from some source that have always existed, from something eternal.

It seems impossible to actually comprehend any of these two alternatives:

1-something came from absolute nothing

2-there was something that always existed, something eternal

Do any of you guys know some explanations for this problems? Are there scientists that address the problem of existence erupting from nothingness or the eternity of something?

It does not come down to those two choices. You are making a false dichotomy.

Here are some other examples.

c) The universe has always existed and is eternal, with no cause or meaning. Trying to find the "cause" of the universe is a nonsense question, like asking what the color of a number is.
d) The laws of causality as we know them do not apply on extreme small (smaller than Strings) or extremely large (multiverse) scales. Things can cause themselves somehow.
e) The universe doesn't exist and somehow we are perceiving the illusion of the universe in a way which does not require a universe to exist.

Also, I would like to point out that by claiming "the universe was made by God", that does not solve the problem at all. You just have the exact same problem but with the word "universe" replaced with the word "God".

On to the next point
>it seems impossible to actually comprehend any of these two alternatives:
Just because something seems hard to believe doesn't mean it's untrue. For these "big questions", we have shockingly little information to work with. Really, anything is possible at that scale, and all we can do is grope blindly and make guesses.

Sup /sci/. I am a 22 year old college student going to get my degree in plastics engineering. Plastics isnt really what i was looking for in particular, that salary is decent i guess but i was more looking for a "more important" level of engineering with a higher salary as well.

Would it be easy to take my plastics degree and go into grad school for, say, nuclear engineering or possibly aerospace engineering? Both fields that have higher pay and are more interesting to me? Or is this just a big waste of time/money?

If you're going to grad school anyway, it's a good opportunity to change your focus. If you can get into a grad program you're more interested in, go for it. I had a civil degree but went to grad school for environmental.
>>

>plastics engineering
Holy shit, anon. You can't be serious. Pick a real engineering degree. Mechanical, for exemple, is a real and respectable eningineering which is related to both nuclear and aerospace.

What are the effects of supplementing thyroid on your thyroid gland? There's conflicting information, my doctor says I shouldn't have any problems going on it for 3 months and coming off if my symptoms aren't dealt with. Is supplementation a permanent thing?

Is all evolution dysgenic?

>From the early years of the twentieth century surgical treatments have been
developed for numerous genetic diseases and disorders. In 1912 a surgical treatment
was developed for congenital pyloric stenosis, a genetic defect of the
stomach occurring in about one in 4,000 babies. The condition consists of a
narrowing of the outlet which prevents food from being ingested, and the treatment
consists of the surgical widening of the outlet. Before the treatment was
developed, babies born with the defect died. The treatment enabled babies to
live and transmit the defective gene to their descendants.

Isn't this why niggers attract women more easily? They aren't affected by thousands of years of technology having a dysgenic effect on their genes; they emerged straight out of the wilderness where natural selection is very strong.

Isn't all of civilization like the surgical treatment in the quote?

Should not this means that singularities wouldnt exist?

Are you sure? and do you have any source for your claim (or mine)?

In the case where our universe is simulated by another universe why do people always extrapolate information from the simulated universe and extend it to the simulator universe?

For example, if on this planet we have Intel and AMD cpus, why does the simulator universe have to have the same weak processing machines? How can we know that they have the same limits for memory and processing power? How can we know for sure this information? How can we prove this?

Moreover, why does the simulator universe have to have the same laws of physics and limits as our universe does?
