He shows up as well in "Computers, Pattern, Chaos and Beauty" as well as "Hacker's delight". Both are pretty influential books.

I always notice when he is cited since I have emailed with him back and forth ~200 times while working on Gnu/FSF projects.

It's weird because I don't even have a highschool diploma and never had a programming job or made any money programming.

Why do every fucking algebra textbooks has so much category theory shit? Is it really necessary to introduce categories just to talk about groups and homomorphisms? Or is it just authors jerking off "look, I'm better than you because instead of defining products in the most straightforward way I throw some category theory shit and just say lol it's special case of some abstract nonsense"

>Why do every fucking algebra textbooks has so much category theory shit?
I understand that you got memed into reading Aluffi and are upset, and this is justified, but don't make stupid generalizations. The vast majority of intro algebra texts either save category theory until the very end when you're actually prepared to grasp it or don't even use it at all.
>>
>>9101500
No, I was reading Lang, but even in lecture notes from my uni category theory is introduced just at the beginning
>>
>>9101496
Catergory theory is either useful or necessary for some further topics in algebra like homological algebra, algebraic geometry, and commutative rings

I'm contemplating obtaining a second degree in mathematics (for personal fun). I already have a degree in emergency medicine from U. of Pittsburgh. Because of my current schedule and life, I am unable to attend university full time and just knock it out. So I'm thinking of taking a bunch of online courses instead.

But I'd like it to "mean" something when I get the second degree. I don't want a degree mill to just print out a piece of paper that i can hang on my fridge. I'd like to have the degree "mean" something.

So what would you do if you wanted to pursue a second degree in mathematics? Which school would you "go" to?

If I was in medicine I'd try to get a degree that was interdisciplinary with math, like math bio, you'll half the prereqs and learn the math necessary to enhance your degree

>The idea that lightning never strikes the same place twice is one of the oldest and best known superstitions about lightning. There is no reason that lightning would not be able to strike the same place twice; if there is a thunderstorm in a given area, then objects and places which are more prominent or conductive (and therefore minimize distance) are more likely to be struck. For instance, lightning strikes the Empire State Building in New York City about 100 times per year.

Is it not very reasonable to assume as that a lighting strike is a transfer of electrons from clouds to the earth, that as the struck locale on the earth is now more negatively charged than before (and it's surroundings), that it becomes very unlikely for lightning to strike in that same place again, if only for a relatively short time? This is all dependent of course on the dispersion rate of electrons in the ground which I have no clue about.

>>
>>9101210
If the electrons stayed where they struck, then it would be hazardous to go near a lightning strike due to the extreme static discharge that you would encounter. As it stands, it isn't, and so it follows that you were correct about having no clue about this.
>>
>>9101210
i think the factor of it being closest to the sky and made of conductive metal really means more. a random spot in a flat field would probably statistically not have a significant likelihood to be struck again, if it is equal to all other spots. But it wouldnt be random, it would be slightly elevated or have some factor that makes it an ideal dispersion point, relative to other points around you.

i know if you are struck by lightning as a person, your likelihood of being struck again goes up by a huge amount

Here's a paradox I came up with.

Mr. X has read an article about schizophrenia from Wikipedia and is 100% certain that he is suffering from delusions. However, everyone else thinks that this is not the case and that mr. X is doing just fine.

Now, is mr. X delusional or not?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yes he is
>>
He might be delusional yet not have schizophrenia. Maybe he's just very hypochondric or something.
Or maybe he's just hallucinating that everyone else tells him he's fine.
Computer time is over OP, get back to your solitary confinement cell now please.

Why do people still want to find bigfoot? I mean, it would make sense why we would want to find crashed UFO's or whatever because we could get us some sick alien tech. But why is bigfoot such a big subject? I mean, lets imagine a scenario where we did find bigfoot and we put him in a cage in a zoo and people all over the world saw him. What next? We just spent the last 40 or so years looking for a big ape-human hybrid. What then? Sorry if this post seems like it would fit better in /x/ but i'm not smart.

thanks

Hey are there any space cowboys out with some knowledge in cardiology? I have been made aware recently by some concerned friends that taking amphetamines can lead to valvular heart disease, but the papers are behind a paywall and I can't read them so there's no way to know if this is a definitive causal link.

For reference I am a 5'8'' 110 lb 23 y/o student, never been overweight or obese, and had a bit of a stunted growth as a child. I've been on adderall since I was 11 years old and it seems to work for ameliorating the symptoms of ADD. The difference in ability to focus with and without my meds is like night and day so I would like to know how bad the risk of developing valvular heart disease is if I continue at my dose which is 3x20mg a workday.

I also take klonopin for anxiety since I was about 22 but that's probably an irrelevent worry, I can't imagine a sedative being as dangerous for the heart compared to a stimulant. These meds have been part of my daily routine for years and I was honestly shocked at the concern some of my friends expressed, they seem convinced that they inevitably lead to heart disease and my doctors have never warned me about this risk before.

I have never been obese, so I have not been previously worried about heart disease but last week i had my blood pressure checked I had a reading of 128/84 which is pre-hypertension. The last time it was checked was in 2012 when it was 123/82, should I be worried about this increase over 5 years?

Maybe i am overreacting but i have always heard heart disease was a sinister condition with few symptoms and often underestimated seriousness, and that its the kind of thing where you dont know that it has become much worse and one day you'll come home, go to bed or strain yourself picking up a heavy box or shitting and then suffer a massive heart attack and that''ll be the end, over in the blink of an eye and killed by something with invisible progression that's how people seem to describe it...

I'm solving an integral for dx/(x^3), or could be 1/(x^3) dx

Sorry for not using tex, new to this thread but I've heard you're good.

The thing is that solving it with the exponent formula v^n dv and solving it witht the natural logarithm formula dv/v gives me different results that don't add up.

Why???? I'm driving myself crazy. Help sci.

>>
Sci won't help you, you fucking moron.
That ain't shit for sci.
>>
Your integrals are the same.

Think of it as x^(-3) dx and integrate with the exponent rule. The natural logarithm rule is just the special case.

For example, integral of 1/(x^2) dx = x^(-2) dx = -1/x

Is there a good way to learn materials on your own and then receive college credits for them? I'd kind of like to get a second degree but don't have any interest in paying for more than one or two semester's worth of classes.

Unis want to make money, at least in burgerland. Their money making power comes from a monopoly on respectable certification. If they even recognized the fact that everything people pay $100,000 to learn in undergrad can be learned in one's free time, and let you get credit and certifications for it, ((((((they))))))'d lose that power.

It really depends on what it is you are wanting to do with the degree.

There are a lot of jobs that experience can fill the void of a degree, as long as you have some kind of evidence that you know what you're doing, but it all really depends on what the subject is.

What do you want/need a degree for?
