>Post stories about using map (apps), and post app recommendations.
Searched a long time for a satellite map app that works offline. There's nothing out there. I just ended up using the [google maps] app that allows you to "kinda sorta" save satellite maps offline that work with gps. The outrageous thing is that it self deletes after a couple weeks. What kind of garbage is that?
While in the woods, I used the app to make sure if I was walking in a straight line. App doesn't allow you to mark your progress, so I had to make shit a system where every now and again I used the apps "ruler" features to mark the distances between my last check ups, making a line that shows my progress. All I can say is that despite the app being not the most desirable, it helped a lot. I was zig zagging like crazy without it.
While hiking in the forest you naturally take the path of least resistance - a few feet over this way, a few yards down this natural path - and bam, you're going in circles.

It's called paper bro, learn to use it.
GPS Kit from Garafa. Costs $10 in the app store but it's totally worth it.
Alright /out/ists. So I'm heading into the Cascades in Montana in 2 weeks for a spring camping trip with some pals. Should I expect there to be fucktons of snow? It's about 4000 ft elevation
you'll probably freeze to death desu
yes it is going to be very snowy
Well fuck. Thank you. Guess I'm changing location then
What are some good passive deterrents to keep predators off your property and especially out of your yard?
I may be moving to a rural area sometime soon, and I've been looking at a good deal on a cabin pretty well deep in the woods. I'm a bit worried about large predators coming after my dog if he's in the yard. I know it's unlikely, but it only takes one run-in with a bear or cougar to kill your dog, so no real room for mistakes here.
All I can find on the internet is really obvious bullshit like "put away your birdfeeders!" (I won't have any) "don't store dog food inside!" (no shit?) "don't put your garbage out overnight!" (again, no shit)
I'd like to have a dog door so the dog can go out into a fenced area as he pleases during the day if I'm out.
in my inexperienced brain, I feel a solid fence (can't eat what you can't see) with angled extenders at the top (to prevent climbing animals) and buried mesh (to prevent digging) would be effective enough as long as it was too tall for a cougar to just jump straight over.
Is investing in a hot wire not worth it? would my idea for this particular type of fencing work? my dog is about 50 pounds and could probably scare off a black bear that wandered close (they're the only bears in the area), but I doubt he could do anything with a cougar.
>>977561
Build a deer fence around your entire property.
>>977607
couldn't a bear just tear right through it, though, if he wanted?
Build a shed. The bear will ignore everything else and inhabit it.
I really hate living in suburban Ohio, and want to go live somewhere rural and do shit on my own, but there's nowhere to go within 20 miles. What do I do to get closer to nature, or at least prepare for when I'm old enough to ditch?
>>977512
go to west Virginia
youre close
Aren't you old enough to ditch right now? Adults can go wherever they want.

Does anyone else go on day-camps?
>basically solo picnic in the woods
>set this up tonight so i can cook lunch tomorrow
>>976609
I go out in the back field quite often and make a little fire with primitive techniques, listen to some music, and smoke a pipe.
what are you making for breakfast?
>>976622
Nice that sounds familiar
>>976637
Lunch. And i dunno what I'm gonna make yet. Definitely tea and some kind of meat. I'm open to suggestions

I'm sure this has been brought up plenty of times here, but it's my first time on /out/ so forgive me.
Do any of you guys have experience with or know much about solar powered coolers? There aren't many options out there and of course they are all expensive. But I cant imagine spending what people spend on yeti coolers seems you'd be better off spending the extra cash on a solar powered "portable refrigerator"
>>976279
You would need a larger panel and a battery
At least 150 watts and a mar
>>976285
So youre saying the tech is still too far behind for there to be any practicality at the moment?
>>976287
Yes.
Right now it takes a $1000 arb fridge or equivalent and 150 watts solar and a car battery.
Hey /out/, found this fruit(?) on my travels, anybody know what it is?
>>976177
Part of the world? On a tree, bush, vine, etc?
>>976185
Growing on a vine in an abandoned part of the city, we're talking about 2 - 4 years of neglect, no maintenance whatsoever.
Can you cut it open and check for pits or a seed pattern?
I hate the city, and I hate the suburbs. I've been living in this barren hellhole my whole life. I recently discovered that I have a serious case of /out/ism and want to live as far away from the city as I can get. I still want to live in a town (ie - not out in the wilderness), but I want to live where there is lots of greenspace. Where I live in Ontario, there are lots of small greenspaces in between the larger urban centers, but they are mostly devoid of life beyond the squirrels and songbirds. I wouldn't be able to eat any mushrooms or berries I found, because they would all be contaminated with road runoff and sewage chemicals from the polluted water in the area.
Is it possible to escape this wasteland? Are their jobs and affordable living outside major urban centers for someone who wasn't already born in those areas? Can it be done?
>>975994
Even out in of the city, most of the wild berries near me get sprayed with poison.
>>975995
You mean in farmers' fields? I can't believe people would be going out to wild greenspace and spraying raspberries just 'cuz.
>>975999
>wild greenspace
You talk like a brainwashed retard
Anyone happen to know of any rock climbing in Louisiana? I'm moving there soon, but I can't find any resources about places to climb. Most interested in outdoor and indoor bouldering. Help?!?!?!?
>a swamp
>bouldering
ok anon, slow down on those beers
>>975830
According to google there are three climbing gyms in Louisiana.
There is no actual rock climbing there. Your best bet is Alabama.
>>975830
Highest elevation in Louisiana is 535 feet. I'd be amazed if there's a single outdoor boulder in the entire state.
Unless there's a climbing gym somewhere you might just be shit out of luck.
Has anyone here ever worked at a campgrounds before? I'll be starting a new job at the local campgrounds in a few weeks, and I can't find any relevant info on google about working there, what to expect, etc.
All I know is that I'll be assigning people to their cabins, cleaning up after them and a few other duties.
Would appreciate any and all advice or what else I should suspect. Thank you.
p-pls respond
>>975806
Uhhh, prisoners and RV snowbirds take care of all our state park campgrounds here. Is the job a privately owned site or wat?
>>975862
Yeah, it's private.
I want to travel the entirety of the U.S. by foot (One of my life goals), but I also don't want to die on the way. How legal would it be to do this since I have no actual address, and what the hell would I sell to sutain myself? I could of course make money and then go on my trip, but that'd be pretty gay and I was thinking of making video blogs of all the oddities I find to sell and my trip as a whole anyways.
>>975641
P.S. How likely am I to get jailed if I open carry a machete everywhere?
>>975641
Sell Meth.
Its light weight, non hazardous if handled correctly, sells for a pretty penny and best of all, if you get tired from all the walking, you can just do a bunch of meth!
>homeless general
I live in Australia. Someday I want to see beautiful blue freshwater lakes, lush green hills and meadows, snow capped mountains, valleys, crystal clear streams, wild flowers growing everywhere, green thick forests, rivers with freshwater fish.
Where can I find this on Earth? Switzerland? Canada? Where exactly?
You can literally come over here to NZ and get most, if not all of that, in Central Otago and Fiordland.
>>975382
'murica
pic related is washington state, which has 100% of your desires. BC would be a good choice too, it's filled with australians for some reason
that other guy's probably right though, NZ is a lot closer
>>975417
this. WA state is (and even Oregon †bh) surprisingly diverse and quite rolling and beautiful
>desert scrubland
>plains
>rolling hills
>mountains
>pacific forests
with the rockies going right up the middle it's almost like a cross between Montana (for WA) and Nevada (for Oregon) but then you get the mountains and forests. Shit's pretty amazing.
So /out/, what are some recommended summer jobs? I'll be driving up to Alaska in June to look for some work, preferably in the fishing industry or maybe some forestry work. Anyone have any advice? Other anons feel free to discuss other summer job topics.
Age and interest dependent, but you could check out working at a summer camp. The pay is generally shit, but it's a free place to live, free food, often free clothes for the outfit. I worked last summer and pulled in 2100 after taxes. It came out to like 2.50 an hour but I'd do it again. Granted I'm only 20.
I lived in Alaska and despite the pop culture image of it, its not a developing frontier and there is no shortage of unskilled labor
>>975368
I've had my fair share of summer camp experience in Boy Scouts. Really it's just an excuse to spend a few months in Alaska, even if I spend most the time canning fish.
