Been thinking about running away from it all for a while. Not like committing suicide, I mean actually running away from everything. I want to run in a random direction, live in the forest and not be found for years. Any tips on how to just disappear and not be found again? Also, woodland survival tips (North American ones) are extremely helpful, e.g. what should I bring with me, easy to make shelters are all helpful. I know you guys are smart ;) Take note I also live in a part of Canada that is not warm all year round. I know exactly where to go. I just need the tips.

I've got two 4'x4' raised beds with plans for one more--I'm wanting to make a little pathway between/around them with lava rocks and some walking stones.
There's nothing bad about that idea, right? My mom suggested I put sand down before the lava rocks to help kill the grass/weeds that are already there. I'm mostly using lava rocks because I had to move them anyway, from another area (flower beds) where I didn't want them.
>>974448
Put plastic down under the pathway gravel/rocks/blocks. You can use plastic dog/cat food bags, roof sheeting, etc. Just not blue tarp, not landscaping cloth, or clear plastic, those three deteriorate way too fast under paths. Sand will just be the perfect growing medium for grass and weed seeds to germinate and sprout.
32 days after putting the seed in water, there finally is some top growth on the avocado. Root has reached some length too, allowing me to wait a day or two between waterings so I took of the plastic bag
Of course I've still got plenty of time to go before potting it
Hello, I've just bought Marmot Trestles 0 on sale for ~$100 (in Europe) and I have got 3 days to decide if I should keep it. I'm pretty worried about size and weight of it. To day I was only camping during summer and warm autumn/spring weekends with my +5C bag and I want to try sleeping in colder conditions. So my questions:
1. Is it good choice considering I want to sleep under tarp/in tent in late autumn and probably in winter someday?
2. Is it good choice in that price-range (below $150)? And is it a good price for it?
If No.2 is negative:
3. What synthetic sleeping bag can /out/ recommend that is lighter and smaller?
Also ITT: sleeping bags general

is your trestles 0f or 0c?
i have a trestles 15(f), and that fucker's bulky as hell, but it's kept me warm deep into the 20s (also f) on a mediocre foam pad.
My snugpak tactical 2 makes me so happy, packs down small, keeps me warm, well made and British(TM)
>>973559
Check how cold it gets for your winter trips in average. You might want a tent instead of a tarp, since it will add a few degrees of warmth.
If you plan on slightly cooler winter nights like -36 C or such with this bag, judging from the numbers you'll need a tent with a heater, preferably more people and take turns managing the heat.

Anyone go /out/ in South Carolina? Post favorite locations, tips, stories, whatever.
It's pretty much the worst state for going /out/; limited locations, almost non-existent outdoor community, hill billies with guns innawoods, etc.
Plus every remotely good area is just a shitty version of a similar area in another state.
>tl;Dr sc is the worst state for going/out/
Pic unrelated, is a pic from SC though
>>971778
Agreed.
The weather is garbage. Just today it was a low of about 30 to a high of 80 with Jungle level humidity. At least in the desert the humidity is low so a temperature swing like that is tolerable. Once May gets here its best to stay inside.
>>971778
If you want to drive to NC there are some cool places out there towards pisgah and the state park.
>>975045
NC is so infinitely superior to SC it's not even funny. Much better /out/ experiences to be had, fewer rednecks and niggers, slightly less unbearable summers.
>that odd dispersed campsite you stumbled upon in the middle of a lodgepole forest seven years ago which you think about every day and know it's going to be the place where you die
>that time in 2015 you drove through the town where you grew up and couldn't see the mountain you distinctly remember being to the south of town
>>971773
Something like this happened to me, but it was one of MY old campsites, a place where I had once considered killing myself. I stumbled across it again years later and all the memories came back.
>>971773
>that favorite disperesed campsite right by a good creek that you drunkenly led a hobo to in good faith, and the very next time you camped there he found you, so now you can never camp there again.
It even got 3g coverage and a clear sky view.
Anyone ever use one of these big metal-frame vintage Keltys? Currently my only backpacking pack. Pretty big, stands pretty tall. You guys think its practical or should I just invest in a new pack?
idfk dude rent one and find out
>>971759
>It's a preference, try it out for yourself and make the call.
That said, I've got a Camp Trails that's essentially the same (right down to the same side pouches and lay out of the metal frame). I bought it after I had owned a few internals and frameless packs. I fucking love it and prefer it for any load over ~50lbs or anything bulky and awkward. Been thinking about getting a new-issue external, but can't bring myself to do it because there's essentially nothing different about the new ones.
>>971759
I had one as a kid and hated it because all the rich kids made fun of me. So buy your wife's son the newest bullshit.
But i loved my alice pack in the army. I could carry 90 pounds in that motherfucker. I seriously considered their internal frame packs a downgrade after carrying very heavy loads.
So, in summation: it's really all about what you are carrying and how vulnerable you are to being made fun of.
Anyone on this board have to deal with any medical problems when /out/?
Me and my gf have a 3 month road trip planned around the US, camping at a bunch of different spots and now I find out that i'm Late onset type 1 diabetic.
Now have a lot of new shit to deal with having to test my blood and inject insulin and shit and honestly feeling pretty down about it, I keep wondering if i'll be able to handle this or what would happen if I need a hospital but i'm in the middle of the woods somewhere.
Anyone have to deal with diabetes or something that involves a lot of medical care but you still make it /out/, tell me your stories give me confidence please.
>>970669
Its not as bad as you think man. Read up on it, manage your food intake and make sure not to skip testing and you will be just fine.
i have a 16 year old /in/ cousin who's insulin dependent, and my brothers and i take him /out/ backpacking in the sierra every summer.
your key is going to be a) learning to recognize when your sugar is low, and b) being with someone who will recognize when your sugar's low and make you test no matter how big an asshole you're being about it when you miss it
sorry guy, getting old aint no joke.
Basically a free-for-all SHTF thread. Post whatever, but here's a general theme:
Hey, outists. I've been thinking about this for a while, and I haven't seen a thread on it specifically. I want to know how you'd rate scenarios, both in equipment, environments, and varying levels of bad things.
Zones include (but are not limited to):
City
Suburbs
Rural
Wilderness
Environments include (but are not limited to):
Tundra
Woodland
Forest
Jungle
Desert
Plains
Hills
Mountains
Disasters include (but are not limited to):
Hurricane
Flood
Tornado
Wildfire
Volcano
Economic collapse
Enemy invasion
Zombies (for posterity)
TEOTWAWKI
Equipment is total FFA (but let's keep it realistic in terms of the average individual's budget & accessibility)
Mix & Match to give me your WORST CASE SCENARIOS vs. BEST CASE SCENARIOS
Lots to consider
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjh_iEQ_7cw
>>967233
Worst case seems pretty obvious.
Big City
Desert
TEOTWAWKI
Survivable, but solely dependent on whatever equipment you have. Water and food would be totally scarce, save for whatever cacti are at your disposal. Basically Mad Max
>>967241
Is that a series?

aww, bless your little cotton socks x
Are these lil Coleman hatchets good for /out/ing? I picked one up at big5 today, but it felt a little heavy. I'm not sure if I'd really want a "lightweight" hatchet, though.
>>957290
prolly needs to be sharpened but after that it'll be fine m8
How do you cope with loneliness innawoods
Talk to myself and/or animals. Really though, I head out to get away from people, so loneliness isn't really part of the equation. I suppose it could be different if one was on fire watch or something though.
>>957087
I'll listen to music or audiobooks. Every now and again, I'll download TedTalks or some political speakers speech.
If that's not your cup of tea, just find someone to go with.
>>957087
I go /out/ with friends.
>REEEEE You're doing it WRONG!
I go /out/ alone, too. Both are enjoyable for different reasons.
How do I get friends to go /out/ with?
>tfw live in norway

Every once in a while there are /out book threads and it seems like now is a good time for another.
>Walden
>Death in the long grass by Peter Capstick
>My first summer in the sierras by John Muir
>Journals by Lewis & Clark
>Man eaters of kumaon by Jim Corbett
Most recently i read The loss of the ship essex which is a collection of accounts from the survivors of a whaling ship that gets sunk by a whale in the south Pacific thousands of miles from the coast of Chile. It's pretty grim tale and also the inspiration for moby dick, but also gripping as these sailors cling to life in small boat with limited provisions while hoping to reach land after months of drifting.
I couldn't get through Walden. Need to try again soon.
Vagabonding by Rolf Potts or the Alex honnold biography are both ok
>>977537
Walden is very dry at times but there are passages which really embody the sense of adventure and appreciation of nature in incredibly beautiful language. But yea it's not a page turner either. Leave it in your bathroom and read 2 pages at a time while you do your business.
