Specifically a used Cayenne S. I'm considering getting one in the future. I hear the newer ones only have 4 cyl. turbo instead of the 6 cylinder porsche is known for though.

Caymans are pretty damn fantastic, although a bit down on power so they don't intrude on the 911's territory.
Maintenance-wise they're far from bad, Porsche has a great track record when it comes to reliability and you can do most things yourself, on older ones at least.
Parts aren't gonna be shitbox-tier cheap obviously, they take a lot of oil so oil changes are fairly costly, and if you take them to a shop (or god forbid the stealership) be prepared to pay out the ass since these are still high-end German cars.

I recently bought a BMW 1 series 118i. It's a 2010 reg and has very low mileage. I love it so far, but fuel consumption is pretty grim.
It's an auto, which I thought might improve the fuel consumption as I do a lot of inner city driving. However, I'm getting about 280 miles out of a full tank.
Is this reasonable when doing short city journeys, or could there be something wrong with the car itself? It's all under warranty at the moment so I figured it would be better if I got any issues fixed ASAP.

No you should be getting much more than that. We're talking about a low-revving NA I4 engine in a lightweight car, you should be getting at least 350 miles per tank. Even my 2007 530i is getting more miles per gallon than your car which is insane.

It has had a recent oil change, new tyres, new brake pads (not that this would make a difference). Exhaust is fine, no blowing.
Petrol tank leak maybe? Something catching underneath?

It could be a problem with the fuel lines or the fuel filter. Could also be clogged injectors. What is the mileage on it? You might need new spark plugs.

Have fun overtaking people on the highway and making your turns. It's an automatic but I saw this a couple days ago from an importer and it was listed for two grand. Probably around four or five grand by the time it's in the states and registered and all that jazz.
You're going to spend multiple times as much to try and build one off of a chassis or some other incomplete bullshit you don't want to deal with.
