Hey /o/, i've just been acceptrd into a formula SAE team, i am pretty excited because after a few years of studying engineering with no practice whatsoever i will finally start to build something. We make a lot of pieces from scratch with CNC machines and we also build the carbon fiber parts ourselves. I can also finally learn to weld with a TIG. I'm in the vehicle dynamics team, for now we are working on the torque vectoring, stability control and TC algorithms for this year's car (i don't like nannies but the objective is to beat other cars with amateur racers, so...), some computer simulations and then we will test the car on road. We will also start to design the suspension for the next year.

So what did you study if you did study... I want to go down a similar path and was thinking mechanical engineering was the way to go, but I am not sure... Is there anything else in that aspect relatable to car stuff.
>>
>>16854811
Automotive engineering, this is a three year degree and i'm at the last year, but you can enter even at the first year if you know your stuff. Depending on where you plan to go it's best to stick wiyh mech eng rather than automotive, as it is a more established course, but if your uni has a good automotive course go for it. Also, as a mech eng you will have a lot more options for work (and you can still specialize in vehicles), but automotive engineers are somewhat of a rarity here, so usually automotive companies prefer automotive engineers all other things being equal, and you probably won't have trouble finding a good job in either case

where are you going to school?

I was going to community college for mechanical engineering hoping to transfer to a school with an automotive engineering program but i dropped out because I am a piece of shit.

Im assuming you aren't American.

I'm looking to get into rotary, and I'm trying to decide between a turbo FC or a first gen RX8. They both seem to be around the same price in my area (Roughly $6k) for examples that aren't beat to shit, and I'm wondering what are some of the differences. I like the interior of the RX8 more, I like the modern creature comforts after driving an early 90s nissan pickup for so long. They put out similar power too, right? I read the 0-60 times for the FC are a bit better, but I also like the fact that regardless of how little room there may be, the RX8 does have rear seats and suicide doors. People tell me the turbo FC motors can be pretty finicky if not treated well, but people talk about how awful the Renesis is all the time too so is one significantly less reliable than the other? I have no problem pre-mixing, keeping tabs on the oil, paying for high octane gas, or anything maintenance wise required for a rotary. I've never worked on one before or done a rebuild or anything but I have no apprehensions to learning.

do a compression test, that's what matters the most. i've seen plenty of nice looking cars for a high price with shit compression and plenty of cars that'll require some interior bits, maybe a fender or paint and have a decently recent rebuild so good compression.
na rotary lasts the longest when treated right before needing a rebuild. the turbo cars are way less forgiving if they weren't looked after correctly. the fc can have the power bumped up for almost free vs it'll cost lots to barely get a power increase from the rx8.
the fc turbo stock intake and exhaust are restrictions to keep the turbo in check because shit wastegate and i've rarely seen an fc sold with a stock exhaust. parts store together a new afm to turbo inlet for ~$30 and that's inprovements there. get atleast an adjustable fpr or rising rate fpr, and get the wastegat ported if it's and s4 (86-88) the ht18 doesn't outputting more than 10psi and won't do it for long. get a watermeth kit and the tmic is ok at up to 15psi with decent IATs, cx racing makes a copy of the impossible to find intercooler that fits in front of the radiator with angled outlets that everyone likes since it's an FMIC and keeps short plumbing, stock turbo should last a good while at 9psi, put in a better fuel pump and back timing down a few degrees and stock injecors will be sufficient. if you make the stock turbo into a hybrid with a t4 compressor you'll need an adjustable fpr for sure, 2 would be better (one for each fuel rail so you won't be too rich while just running the primaries)
obviously get a wideband o2. stock ecu won't retard any more timing after you pass 9psi so if you do with a hybrid/new turbo make sure to back down the timing with the cas at least.
that's the cheap dirty way to do it and it'll work. rtek is garbage and seems you can't use a computer with it easily so save up for a standalon EMS if you want more. unlike the rx8 the stock turbo trans can handle being hard on more than 300whp
>>
also you'll need a cheap fuel cut defender (you can make it yourself if you can't find a cheap one) or the 1.8 RTEK (whatever the cheap options are) to disable fuel cut at the least and it'll let you run bigger secondaries at the stock fuel pressure.
you can safely run pretty high hp on the stock ecu and with most ports, only issue is you might have a shitty idle and you'll use more gas. and tuning is much more work.
install the wideband as far back on the exhaust as you can as well, it'll keep the o2 cooler, less likely to damage it from heat, when you remove the stock turbo just take it out with the manifold through the front, remove the rad hoses and it'll fit. check hatch drains for rust.
rx8 dashboards like to crack
12 afr is fine around 5psi, as you get above 7 go for 11-10, above 9lbs 10.0 at the leanest under full boost/high rpm
watch out for 5th gear synchros, they brake easy if they haven't been changed to thenew one you can get (from a miss shift, 2nd to 5th instead of 3rd) mainly an issue of shifter return springs are bad

That's quite a lot of info, thanks a lot. I don't know how much power I'd really be looking to make, or even how soon. Like I said, I've been driving a 90s pickup with barely 100hp for quite while so either one of these cars would feel pretty fun at first I'm sure. Which one tends to handle better stock? People rave about the RX8 being surprisingly nimble, but I don't know if "surprisingly" translates to good, especially compared to the ~200?lb lighter FC. Of course suspension can always be changed and I wouldn't mind it down the road either.

How does /o/ feel about Hydrogen fuel cell tech?

Right now it's still far too expensive to be a practical alternative on the market; not only the cars (due to the large amount of platinum used in the fuel cells, and the expensive carbon fiber H2 tank), but the fueling stations themselves cost millions for a setup that can only fuel a couple cars at a time, and a small number during the day. It's all driven by California emissions mandates, and funded by governments throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at Toyota/Hyundai/et all to develop it.

Also, with relatively affordable, usable BEV's hitting the market in greater numbers, and a growing number of fast charging stations being installed, I don't see the market for these among consumer vehicles for a long while yet. Most likely use will be in long distance trucks in 20-25 years when oil starts getting really expensive.

Mind you, I like the technology itself, but not for this application.
>>
>>16854094
Damn shame, I like them a lot more than lithium battery systems. The idea of quickly refueling a high-torque electric motor without significant wear on the components sounds great, even if it's not a combustion system. Shame that cars just need so much damned infrastructure.

> What are some big mistakes people make when driving?

® Getting emotional delusions - assuming other drivers are 'trying to piss them off.'
® Not looking far enough ahead.
® Not paying enough attention to the road.
® Not signalling soon enough - turn signals are supposed to show *intent*. They are not supposed to be turned on when you've already started switching lanes.
® Not leaving room for other cars to merge.
® Staying in the left lane on a highway when the right lanes are going their speed and have open spaces.

is there any chance that i could learn how to drive an 18 speed truck even though ive never even drove a manual car just automatics? im around trucks all day and even get to service them and change their air brake pads and the idea of how many gears they have and shat gear you want to be in for a certain speed and how to shift it without using the clutch and changing hi/lo and splitting sounds insanely hard but id feel awesome if i could know how to drive one

theres a truck driving school that is 3 weeks long that is like 20 miles from my house but considering i dont even know how to shift right or the proper way to would they probably use me as a joke and just laugh at me and yell at me for being an idiot? or would i have a chance and probably get a cdl in just three weeks?

So I was in an accident today. My car is essentially totaled. An adjuster still hasn't looked at it yet, but it's pretty obvious that it is in fact totaled. The other dude ran a stop sign and I t-boned him, so I'm not at fault. He has Geico and we have AAA. My car is a 2015 Corolla LE, we bought it new for 18k. Ran a KBB check and it's worth $13k used right now. Is this going to be the payout? Cause it's not enough to buy a new car again.
