The translation is shit. Speaking as a translator and editor, whoever was in charge of both really fucking dropped the ball for LoGH volume 1. And the shitty art doesn't help.

For example, they mix naval and army terminology when it comes to the space fleet. Even if it's a literal translation, it's a bad choice because it creates a constant dissonance in the reader. They know fleets aren't regiments, especially when the Rosen Ritter are already referred to as a regiment. The terms for the actual ranks are badly translated too, and aren't very clear.

There are far too many sentence breaks, which leads me to believe that they kept all the sentences intact from the original Japanese, rather than doing just a smidge of localization and combining a few of the sentences to make for a better reading experience.

The stiffness in the dialogue is pretty bad too. Again, probably unlocalized from the original Japanese.

Did it improve in volume 2? The prose in volume 1 was so bad it was unreadable.

Requiem for Victims is the conclusion to the TV series. Watch this first.

God Bless Dancouga is a followup to the original series.

Blazing Epilogue is not subbed beyond the first episode.

Dancouga Nova is a new story with new characters. However, the only way to watch it is the really blurry and ugly TV version, as the DVD version doesn't have subs.

Requiem for the Victims is basically the conclusion of the TV series and God Bless is a sequel of sorts that puts a nice cap on the series.

Theres a follow up 4 episode OVA but as far as I know it's not subbed and as I understand it's not good.

From there you can check out Nova which is a neat little pesudo sequel stand alone TV series
