>Gasaraki in 1998 prefigured what's happening with Trump's election.
>The whole fucking show is about nationalism resurgence against globalist agenda and guys that pretends to make Japan Great Again. Topics like refugees and interconnected capitalism are invoked to set a coup d'etat.
>In before last episode, US President tells to Nishida "Now we are going to give up hegemonism." A new world begins.

Actually, I watched Gasaraki but I had a really hard time keeping up with the plot since I found the show boring and I had lots of intermissions when I didn't watch it.

What was the plot?

>>

It's hard to describe considering first off the two halves of the show are rather distinct arcs joined by the journey of self discovery of a local man who tries to dance the dance of his people only to get interrupted by stuff.

The second half though deals with unrest as an outstandingly shitty grain harvest from the first half of the show makes Japan incredibly butthurt, doubly so because America decided to institute a moratorium on grain exports because of the same shitty harvest affecting them as well.

So in this collective state of rice deprivation and butthurt a blind Japanese nationalist conspires with higher ups in the JSDF to try and instill a sense of humility into the Japanese people, purging the rot of laziness and consumptionism or something like that by using the economic worth of Japan to crash the world market. This would force the whole world into a period of economic depression and general butthurt, but the blind guy is confident that the Japanese people can take it up the ass well enough that they'll survive it and come out all the better for it.

It comes falling down at the end when the POTUS concedes that trying to make the shitty grain situation work out is better than having Japan go kamikaze on the stock market. It didn't help that the US's attempt to stop the market plan via a black op using TAs ended with the JSDF holding them to a standstill with their own TAs.

The blind man kills himself as atonement for his actions, even though he and the POTUS expressed mutual respect for one another at the end of things.

I don't think Takahashi even wants to be someone as pompous and ridiculous as Tomino. He just makes robot stuff, and uses actual narratives and characters unlike Tomino who can't even write basic dialogue without it complete shit.

I don't. I think that Gasaraki and Brain Powerd were the best Mecha anime of the 90s. .

I find that Takahashi's work is a bit more dry and grittier, were Tomino's is more zanny and emotional. They are both giants deserving of respect. I may lean towards Tomino a bit because I find his themes to be a bit more interesting and his characters to be more dynamic and interesting. But Takahashi is the better plot man, for sure.

Don't most mecha shows with any female characters get that sort of promotion by default? It's hard to sell these things otherwise, though in this case the show wasn't really focusing on that aspect.

I do remember the interview with Taniguchi you're speaking about, but I think he mentioned that his main work was essentially being Takahashi's secretary and also trying to make one of the villains stand out because he was at the center of the family dynamics.
>>
>>15030018
Yes but, for example, the blushing Yushiro pictured on this promotion material does not even exist in the show. He basically is emotionless during 25 episodes. Same with Miharu smiling, it's not just a different context but fully different characters.

Yeah, I was just gonna say this as well. I don't remember Yushiro smiling once.

Though, like Chirico, I think we see glimpses of a very sensitive and tender man a few times in Gasaraki. There's one part where he tries to rescue a guy who goes crazy in an experimental TA, and another where he's caring for Miharu and brings her a cute little flower, which show that he really has a soft side.
>>
>>15030787

Yeah, you're right. I also think he smiled at Miharu at the end, when he was holding her. I meant blushing, there definitely wasn't much of that romantic stuff. Though I thought his relationship with Miharu, understated as it was, was still very sweet. IMO one thing Takahashi does well is portraying men who feel affection very deeply but aren't very emotionally expressive, so they have to show it in much subtler ways.

Read a political book sometime. WWII was led by expansionist nationalisms. Trump's nationalism and Gasaraki subtext are essentially the opposite view, a closed and isolationist project.

Aliens tell during last episode that their hunger for power led them to autodestruction something like one million years ago. They left their body because of that, living in an abstract dimension after disseminating genetics material on earth. The rest is unclear. They watched humans evolve like them, becoming greedy and warlike too, all according to the plan, in order to pursue their own bellicose doctrine into the physical world. Species refinement induced by conflict is a recurring thematic in Takahashi's corpus, with VOTOMS' Wiseman, Galient's Marder...

Then you have Phantom, who is litterally a human-shaped alien "lost" among humans and wants to come back with his homies in dat strange dimension. At least it seems.
>>
Let's rewatch the last episode and try to figure what's goin' on niggaz.

>>
>>15036081
I thought it was the bald naked golden space men trying to retrace their origins through mankind, having lost their sense of self in their ascent to abstract alien godhood.

But yeah, as much of a cerebral mindfuck as it is, the last episode straight up spells it out for the viewer either way, so for all of our collective difficulty in explaining it there's a solution for that: sit through the last episode a few more times.

>>15036097

To my limited recollection, it's basically the aliens had long since ascended mortality and their physical form, and manipulated humans as silent, hidden watchers in a manner similar to the Occuria. They lived vicariously through Humans, as an experiment to see what choices humans will take through their existence.

In the end, the autism squad decides they don't want an existence like the Ayylmaos, they want to live a personal life as their selves, with their own agency of their limited, short existence. Satisfied, the Golden men decide they respect that and fuck off.

Gihren, being the assfuck he was, says he wants to be a goldlmao for that power and doesn't realize he's dooming himself to the hell that the Gasara regret.

I could be wrong. But yeah, that's basically it. Still based out of Nietzsche with the exploration of the theme of the overman it seems.

It's really wild that this is the largest thread on Gasaraki in a while even considering the huge amount anonymous stealth Gasaraki shilling I did around a year ago trying to get people to talk about the series.

You were too early. Raidens being the Type 17 likely means it's set in 2017, since IIRC the year was never explicitly stated. The year of Gasaraki is nearly upon us.

>>15041771
No. You seem to misconstrue "For Japan" as "Against everyone else", a vital difference. Also, you seem to be taking one character's opinion as representative of the show's message.

The entire plan hinges on America taking the bait and crashing its own economy due to its own self interest. It doesn't, Nishida fails, the president singlehandedly avoided a bigger crisis. Nishida kills himself out of remorse. That's it.
>>
>>15041891
You don't know what you're talking about. Even co-director Taniguchi said in an interview that he'd have made the show differently because he is "from a younger generation that likes USA".

>>
>>15042374

Oh, not to mention that one of the two is an island nation with a big population completely dependent on trade to sustain its economy. And it ain't USA. You'd have to be a pretty naive idealist to think Japan would be able to "tank" a depression better than USA (heck, for the record, USA has a pretty good record at dealing with economic crises).
>>
>>15024131
Is this show worth watching? I saw it in an infographic a while back, and it seemed interesting.
>>
>>15042374
Well, consider something like today's South Korean-driven consumer electronics industry; what if their economy went poof abruptly? I have my doubts as an American that we could take it like it was nothing, we're very spoiled by our Samsungs and Hyundais at the moment, and even if China tried to fill the void there's the longstanding image of Chinese goods being jank low quality garbage.

In the 90s Japan had that tech giant allure going on, and the sudden self destruction of their economy would have likely had far reaching consequences. There's also the strategic value Japan as an American ally has in the Pacific, and if they were to collapse a lot of geopolitical crap could ensue (read: China makes mad dash scramble for choice pickings without a JSDF to give them grief), but mostly I think it was premised on Japan's value as a nation of high tech nerds experiencing a hell of an economic boom, something that could be flipped around and made a weapon of economic destruction were it to collapse in the right way at the right time.

At any rate the whole plan of liquidating Japanese assets to bring about a world economic collapse was still hinged on the idea that America was too self centered to undermine the plan (and in real life, would've been premised on the idea that Japanese would never open up to American rice exports because MUH DOMESTIC JAPANESE WHITE RICE SUPERIOR TASTING GOOD STUFF; seriously the rice economy in Japan is some crazy protectionist shit with a lot of picky taste over what is considered acceptable rice), and considering the grain harvest issue they had every right to put their well being on high priority up until Nishida's plan became apparent (because now the well being of the US is being threatened by an act of economic terrorism that has to be defused one way or another).
>>
>>15042374
To be fair, I don't think other nations have fucked with America's crashes in as self destructive of a way that Nishida was attempting. I'm not big on economics and I'm sure the situation was exaggerated because anime, but it definitely seemed plausible enough the way it was pitched during the show.

>>15042383
It's a weird show. People meme it as being an anime with realistic mecha, then fail to mention that the show opens up with a bunch of dudes performing some spooky ritual to summon ancient aliens. I'm not even exaggerating. The narrative is also formatted really weird, because the guy doing said ritual is the main character but he doesn't actually get his own screentime or blatant importance to the plot until around episode 3 or 4.

It's a really great anime, just weird in every way imaginable. One episode it's extremely "realistic" mech action, the next episode there's fuedal Japan mysticism and ancient aliens, all shown through a very unconventional method of storytelling that probably puts a lot of people off.

Give it a shot, it's a pretty unique show. I've been meaning to rewatch it eventually.
>>
>>15042383
At least, it's an unique anime that shows its own topics and brings some radical forms to it. Deserves to be known.
>>
>>15024172
You give him way too much credit. By the time Gasaraki was made the US had been in involved in half a dozen wars in the middle east. It's probably the safest bet you could make.
>>
>>15024553
No actually he didn't. He said nothing about the rice harvest being a globalist plot. He was just pointing out how Japan's increased interconnectedness with the rest of the world, especially the US, has weakened Japan's ability to act independently. The fact that Japan's independent actions results in the US trying to disrupt Japan with a black ops TA attack is proof of the matter.

>>15025053
The blind guy isn't so much "wrong" as he recognizes that he tried to take things too far. He still achieved his core objective of making Japan more independent from the rest of the world and especially the US.
>>
>>15032190
Nationalism is an aspect of imperialism but not all nationalism is imperialistic.

>>15032195
The show works best when you can marathon it in a weeks time.

>>15036081
>Aliens tell during last episode that their hunger for power led them to autodestruction

So maybe they are an allegory for Imperial Japan? Where thing would have gone if Japan won WW2? Takahashi wants a strong and more independent Japan, but not a warmongering and expansionist Japan?
>>
>>15036327
>Still based out of Nietzsche with the exploration of the theme of the overman it seems.

Specifically the rejection of the overman. Chirico had the option to become a god like being by joining with wisemen, but rejected it wanting to just be left alone as a normal guy. The austim squad came to a similar decision.

>>15036642
I liked Galient a lot more than FLAG.

>>15037534
He evidently rejected ascending with his fellow aliens and regrets the decision as he misses his comrades. So he has been working to bring about the Gasaraki so he can rejoin them. Or something like that.

>>15041771
>capitalist burgers

>>15042424
East Asia in general is very protectionist. They want to dump goods on the West, but wont accept the return in kind. When the US was negotiating a meat exporting deal to SK years back SK ranchers threw raw meat at their representatives to protest.
>>
>>15042378
Not to mention the US is fat as fuck where as Japan is all malnourished twig people. If anyone can withstand a food shortage it would be America.
>>
>>15042985
The end result kinda contradicts the notion of a more independent Japan what with the reliance on American rice exports to bail Japan out of its own rut.

Not to mention what weakened Japan's independence was more the identity of Japan itself, a nation without a war apparatus that is still expected to play a part on the world stage (as a side note, consider Patlabor 2 and how it calls foul on the idea of Japan's idea of self defense being able to coexist with the actuality of foreign conflicts and battlefield engagements, how "kill or be killed" is ensnared in the red tape of Article 9). The Begilstan arc has the Gowa family try to circumvent Article 9 and its related implications so as to be able to put TAs on foreign soil (among other issues deemed relevant to the Gowa family's shenanigans, ie those foreign TAs and the thing-mistaken-for-nuclear-explosion contact experiment nonsense of Symbol's doing), despite the fact that TAs don't really seem to have a self defense use at all (though the second half does show them capable of handling riot scenarios; still, they're more weapons of war than peace, especially considering their ancestor, the kugai).

I'm probably rambling a bit due to penning this on a phone but it's not really America that the Nishida faction finds fault in, it's the emasculated postwar Japan, which finds itself at odds with old people like Nishida, or power grabbers like Kazukiyo. Like, Japan has essentially lost its path, it doesn't know where to go from now, and Nishida thought that the solution was to present the nation with a period of hellish economic failure to instill some backbone into the people.

Part of that might have ties to the sentiment of whether or not Japan's postwar self defense attitude is helped or hindered by being America's fuccboi in the Pacific, but that is a completely different issue that I don't think Gasaraki is fully concerned with. Rather, I think the message is, put simply, "walk your own path."

Probably when Infinite Ryvius, Argento Soma, and half the braves get in.

I don't know man, just because Sunrise is involved doesn't guarantee that something will be profitable to put in SRW.

On the other hand, it has magnificent thematic interplay with several series (For example: Muv-Luv Alternatie, Full Metal Panic, even Gunparade March and Blue Gender to an extent due to MLA) that it would go great with.

It really just depends on what they want to do.

So gameplay wise though, what all can they do? Refresh me if I'm wrong.
>25mm AR
>75mm Recoiless rifle
>LOSAT (line of Sight Anti-Tank)
>Grenade Launcher
>That weird...green blast thing for melee attacks
And for defensive options
>Smoke grenade launchers

They'd perform identically in combat to the way VOTOMS ATs were used. IIRC, low movement speed, high mobility? Impossible to hit.

Functionally, you'd have some unique system where the higher Yushiro's will gets, the more buffed all the Focus team members get.

>>

I think the biggest problem for a theoretical SRW would be the ending of the story. The main plot is resolved through economics so who is the final boss? Gowa kills himself and the only other enemy I can think of would be the Kugai.

I finally got a friend to watch it with me, after we got done watching the patlabor movies, and were in the mood to discuss and watch something else concerning the Japanese politics and national identity in the 1990s.

He loves it, and noticed ALL the foreshadowing that I missed, as well as correctly gleaning what technobabble was important in the first episode and putting things together that I didn't.

At one point leading into EP.5, he was speculating on Mile One and how crazy it was, and then said "as long as it doesn't have to deal with any ancient japanese bullshit-" THE SECOND BEFORE THIS APPEARD ON SCREEN.

Yeah. The Kugais seemed more like legit aliens than anything else in the show, IMO. Their eyes especially, which look more "organic"--more like human or animal eyes--than the standard cameras, visors, etc. you see on most mechs.

Also, if you ask me their asymmetrical design is inherently off-putting. Even if mechs have claws or gun hardpoints rather than arms, seeing one with an arm twice as long as the other makes one thinks of deformities and stuff, which is always spooky.
>>
>>15053752

I think the sound design contributed as well. Up till the reveal we had big stompy mecha clunking around, and then suddenly KUGAI - and it sounds wrong by comparison; its footfalls the tempo of its gait, the noises it makes as it moves, they all scream monster. They're different enough, that even having not seen it in years I can still imagine them.

I didn't mean to imply they were new ideals, haha. But he did indeed want a Japan that was strong, economically self-sufficient, that held on to its own culture instead of slowly being "degraded" by the economic giant that was the united States.
So I think we agree actually, just I don't think he saw the US as the enemy, but the weak and pitiable modern Japan as the enemy. As evidenced by that one time where he cut his eyes out at the sight of modern Japan.

I was about to say the left one looks too impractical for Gasaraki, but then again it could be an anti-Kugai loadout. Yushiro at max synch would probably be unbeatable with that sword kit.

I watched the first 7 episodes of Gasaraki today and it's really beautiful thus far. I'm quite impressed with Yushiro's monologues, he's like the Japanese mecha anime version of Ishmael from Moby Dick. I like his quiet, mentally preoccupied demeanor.

I'm really glad this thread happened otherwise I would not have known about this.

If anyone knows some Japanese poetry with this sort of gravitas and relevance outside your standard haiku things, I'd appreciate recommendations.

Maybe I should just ask /lit/ instead, but I'm impressed with the caliber of posting on /m/ and I think this thread arrives at this aim more immediately.

Thanks for your stuff. Too bad there is no english translation available.

The last episode was for sure very evaesque but Gasaraki kept a strong and singular identity during 24 weeks.

Let's keep this thread alive til 2017 fellow ninjas, that's Takahashi's crown.

The one thing I wish is that they'd explained the reincarnation bit a little better. I was honestly never quite sure if Yushiro and Miharu were reincarnations, or if they traveled through time or something due to ayy lmao magic.

The Initial D character's name was a reference to a real life drift racer though.

I don't remember if they were clones.

>>15067125
The Yushiro we follow isn't even the original to begin with, but the show uses it as a launchpad towards a journey of self discovery and search for identity rather than exploring the Nietzschean eternal recurrence.

If I were more well versed in noh (because noh rules everything around Gasaraki, gotta get the masks, YOOOHHHHHHHH y'all) I'd make some connection to the idea of the actor vs their role, but I'm not.

IIRC, the Yushiro from Feudal Japan reincarnated into modern day Yushiro Gowa, who for some reason ended up in the body of the son of the head priest the Gowa clan recruited for the Kai Dance.

>>
>>15071178
I thought that's because they somehow psychologically copied the original Yushiro into Sorachi Kengyou's son. It's not that the reincarnation was into the wrong person, but that the replacement was meant to replicate the reincarnation perfectly.

Fucking sick bastards by the way.

The son, who was the original reincarnation, died during the family's fist attempt at restaging the Noh ritual. Apparently they had figured that might happen in advance and they knew that he'd re-incarnate into the family no matter what, so they had a number of clones serving as hosts for the next incarnation readied well before shit went down.
>>
>>15075496
As a bureaucrat I feel the need to remind you that we are in fact bound by the letter and the spirit of the law while billionaires generally sink a lot of cash into being bound by neither.

Hmm. But if they were clones, why did the Noh guy seem so attached to Yushiro? That's why I always thought he was the Noh guy's biological son who was just brainwashed into replacing the original Yushiro.
>>
I absolutely love this anime. Something about the pacing and the tone just keeps me invested. I wouldn't mind if they remastered or even remade it. It's really good.

That's more the "role."

Which is where the noh metaphor begins to kick in, it seems as if who the role of "Yushiro" is played by is not important, so long as they play the role. We follow Yushiro as he grows to understand both the role he was to play, and the person he chooses to become, and how the two paths diverge at a point to the frustration of Kazukiyo who is in deep playing out the role his ancestor did back in the feudal ages.

You could argue the reincarnation isn't even in a literal sense, but rather in a symbolic act of playing out a role.

But I'm not knowledgeable enough on the art of noh to say if there's anything in there about the actor-role relationship that could parallel to Gasaraki.

If any of you guys want to explain Gasaraki to people who didn't get it, the Greatest Movie Ever podcast is going to record an episode on the show late January.

They actually needed the soul of either of the two priests to make operating the copies safe for others though.
Without either of them around, the fakes started forcefully overwriting the pilot's minds in an attempt to create an approximate that could fulfill the original's mission.
