What are some books that will help me become less "robotic, mechanical, and off-putting" as a friend described me? I'm thinking maybe some sort of practical philosophy treatise, conduct manual, or something like that but I'm open to anything.
>>9595730
more books are the last things you need to solve this problem
The idea that you can use a book or manual as a switch to change yourself is in itself quite mechanical.

It worked in the Sims. I read an interview with a Rhodes scholar who said that he just lives his life like he's a sim, which makes him more efficient, so I try to follow that advice.
what does /lit/ think of abridged books?
I liked the Bible and the Iliad, but the geneology, ship catalogs, and some other parts were entirely skippable and seemed pointless. I'm not entirely sure what abridged versions even do, but if they just cut shit like this out, then I'm v interested.
I plan on tackling some longer books this summer including Moby Dick and Don Quixote, and I'm wondering if the abridged versions might suffice.
what do u think

>what does /lit/ think of abridged books?
Boo. I don't like it.
i read an abridged moby dick in 4th grade.
told my teachers and they thought i lied

OP, Buy a kindle. Then Torrent the books you want to you read. I mean you don't "Collect" Books just to look smart do you?
>>9594996
This. I like collecting physical books, but it's financially unfeasible to regularly buy nice editions in amounts required to sustain a reading habit. Get a reader and download books. Buy the ones you would like to reread later.
what did jodorowsky mean by this?
that he loves the jews and is actually secretly racist against his own people
i wish i was joking
>>9594917
what did you mean by that
what do you think of ubik ?
what is the meaning of it ?
I liked Ubik. Interesting characters, cool concept.
The meaning is that Inception stole everything from Ubik and Neuromancer
it meant that if we ever get to live in self-authored realities, Watch out!
I know /lit/ likes to shit on everything, but what did you guys think about this series? I thoroughly enjoyed it and meet the author, seemed like a really nice guy and he's adamant about expanding the universe. Judgment inbound; I think this is easily in my top favorite right up there with Ender's Game and Cloud Atlas.
YA bullshit that in the end isn't even good leftist reading material
>>9594637
Yep, figured that'd be how /lit/ responds. Snobs where nothing makes you happy.
>>9594670
This reply makes me sad. Post in the scifi/fantasy general? Maybe people will be nicer.
I want to write a novel set in the Late Roman Republic.
What are the best books I could read to gain an in-depth knowledge of the period?
>>9594522
Wiki
How late in the Republic are you referring to?
Sulla's era? Gallic Wars? Triumvirate era?
The rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
Hey guys, I've been wanting to get back into the habit of reading regularly but I'm kinda strapped for money. Does anyone know any good sites to download or torrent mobi or azw ebooks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pic related, it's one of the books I'd like to read.

There's this thing called a library...
>>9594503
I don't really have the time to make designated trips to the library and worry about due dates. Most of my reading will be done when I travel b/w school, work, and home. I'd rather not have to carry a book all that distance. It's much easier just to load shit up on my kindle. :/

The holocaust or as I like to call it the holohoax
The Critically and commercially successful novel Slaughterhouse-Five presents itself, ironically, as a “failure” – as evidence of the inability of the narrator/author to compose a coherent narrative or text, to “make sense” of experience or interpret history intelligibly.
>>9594155
Yeah what's it to ya
>>9594155
How is SLV incoherent?
>>9594155
You could argue that the narrative is broken because the protagonist's mind (and the author's mind, to some extent) was broken by the war. But even then, it's fairly easy to read and understand.
we have our little community here, in cyberspace, and that's cool. but if you're anything like me, you don't really know many people who read and write in real life, or if they do it's mostly academic.
i know it's probably just a lot of romanticized shit, but left-bank paris when all those authors were there seems like a pretty cool spot to be, even if it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. i say we pick a city and all move there and live the romantic life on the dole as down and out bohemians.
my vote would be for mexico city, but i'm open to suggestion.

Is Buddhism the religion of the last man?
Grow out of Nietzsche
>>9594028
No, Nietzsche preferred Buddhism to Christianity.
>>9594092
Not true he just suggested that Buddhism was more entirely anti-life than Christianity so maybe less insidious? He seemed to loathe both.
Are there any good psychological horror stories that involve politics?
1984
>>9594042
That book is terrible.
Ballard does some good work with this. You could say Hunter S Thompson was writing psychological horror with politics in Fear and Loathing.
Darkness at Noon
My brother became NEET three years ago and has become a massive autist thanks to self-help books.
What is the most autistic self-help book or which book causes the most autstic behaviour?
My bet's on pic related.
>inb4 the bible
I keep meaning to read this all the way through to fix myself. But I am so authentic that when people ask me how I am I just say fine and then I can't physically bring myself to ask them "how are you" because I don't care. Even though I see others do it and I think it's the social convention.
I dont know OP but i think this guy could write it >>9593933

You'll only gain self-centered people who only want to talk about themselves. They will have zero interest in you as a person and more of a free-therapist. The book also describes how you can "use" friends to your advantage.
I get that some people say the book made them less shy but damn this isn't the way to "win friends".
