Is the King James Bible really a great work of literature in itself (especially aesthetically/stylistically speaking) or is it just important to read because of its "historical significance"?
>>9642338
Both.
>>9642338
what's the difference
>>9642338
It's a beautiful book in terms of literature, yes.
>The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
>He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
>He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
>Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
>Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
>Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Pure pottery. Compare that to other Bibles. Here's The Message rendering:
>God, my shepherd!
> I don’t need a thing.
>You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
> you find me quiet pools to drink from.
>True to your word,
> you let me catch my breath
> and send me in the right direction.
>Even when the way goes through
> Death Valley,
>I’m not afraid
> when you walk at my side.
>Your trusty shepherd’s crook
> makes me feel secure.
>You serve me a six-course dinner
> right in front of my enemies.
>You revive my drooping head;
> my cup brims with blessing.
>Your beauty and love chase after me
> every day of my life.
>I’m back home in the house of God
> for the rest of my life.
Garbage. The only reason this crap is published at all is because it's a Bible, and they'll publish anything if it says it's a Bible. The KJV was meant to replace both the Geneva Bible, which was the Bible used at home by families, and the Bishops Bible, which was the Bible used in Churches by the clergy. As such, they made sure that the King James would be easy to read and also beautiful to hear. They went over every verse 12 times, comparing it to all the different published Hebrew/Greek texts, the Latin Vulgate, the English translations that came before it, and Bibles in other languages like French. The result is a beautiful work of art that will last for ages. It is aesthetically, stylistically, and spiritually good for you.
What are some books I should skim the summary on Wikipedia and namedrop to trick people into thinking I'm smarter than I actually am?
infinite jest (never read it, but mentioning it at a college party 7 years ago got me a handjob)

I want to learn about fascism. Not what bullshit liberal propaganda claims fascism is, but the real fascist ideology that's threatening civilization.
That said, what are some books on the history of antifa movements and groups.
maybe read The Doctrine of Fascism by Mussolini & Gentile before anti-fa books

>Not what bullshit liberal propaganda claims fascism is, but the real fascist ideology that's threatening civilization
so obviously you have a set of premises that are acting as your working hypotheses as you proceed with this investigation. what do you take to be the difference here?
>>9642279
>threatening civilization
you seem to have some biases.
>Putin is operating a kleptocratic petro-state without real means to project power
>Brits are sick of economic direction from brussels
>Trump is an unpopular president who cant get legislation past congress, executive orders past the courts, or forward motion on either due to ongoing investigations.
I honestly dont know what you are talking about, but The New Criterion all year has been running essays on New Populism, which may be something that touches on what you are interested in, despite your spooks.
What is your favorite play in the Henriad, /lit/?

I want to read The Read and the Black by Stendhal, what should I look into regarding the history of France prior to starting it. I know it may not be necessary, but it would be nice to have at least some surface level knowledge of the setting and times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1830_in_France
You're definitely not going to make it, anon.
The period where The Red and the Black takes place is called the Restoration. For a simplistic and outdated (but generally a good overview) check out Restoration and Reaction, 1815-1848. For a biography of Louis-Philippe, king of France from 1830 to 1848, check out The Perilous Crown. This biography is pretty good at giving a sense of the time and placing Louis-Philippe rather than just giving a story of his life. There's a TON of history out there if you can read French, but unfortunately the Restoration is one of the lesser studied areas of French history by anglophone historians, who tend to favor either the French Revolution or the period starting in 1871. Good luck OP!

I read the book without caring too much about the historical background and yet found it brilliant.Did I really miss much?
Books against self-hate?
>>9642247
why do you hate yourself?
>>9642260
Because I'm a stupid degenerate. I'm wasting the best years of my life watching fucking youtube videos and masturbating instead of growing as a person. I could just as well be dead.

Maybe nietzsche. Haven't gotten to him though.

<he is talking about some magazine someone gave him where they talk about evolution
<he doesn't believe in evolution and thinks nobody who believes in god believes in that "weird" Darwin's Theory
<i try to explain to him what darwin's theory is and how, from a certain religious point of view you can belive in both things.
<i read a lot and i understand Darwin's Theory well but i couldnt explain her nothing. i just started to throw almost incoherent sentences out of my mouth like i always do and he just finished listening me out of pity.

Sorry, i am not a native english speaker.
Fuck, i even fail at greentexting.

Slow down. Think about what you want to say before you say it. Don't be afraid to pause, mid sentence even. Pauses are never as long or awkward for the listener as they seem to you. Try to repeat back what the other person just said before pivoting and then stating your case. Practice by doing.
neck yourself, quickly
I've heard Catholics say it validates religion and wiki say it just posits we have an immortal soul, but I've only been able to read it as explained by others because it rockets over my cranium

I think Kant was right when he said that God's being cannot be determined a priori
The axiom of his proof are not intuitive nor justificated

He is, but it's more to do with his long youtube rants about why Jews are subhuman than his weird nose.
