How the fuck is it possible for one guy to write so much? I've gone through a few of his short story collections, nonfiction, the first few hundred pages of his tome "The Dying Grass", and I'm just overwhelmed by this guy's span of interests.
It seems unreal he could visit so many places and just be capable of forming the sentences he does. Yeah, some of them are superfluously pretty, but there's always something interesting and unique going on in them. That level of creative energy is astounding.
Thoughts on him?
Someone here once called him DFW-lite and that bothered me so much as I was attempting to read Europe Central that I had to put it down and haven't gone back to it since

I find DFW unreadable and think Vollmann is some kind of god

well for one he got the fuck out of the house at a super early age. grabbed a pen, camera and a notebook and got right into life. he's probably lived more than all of us combined. pretty sure he almost died once or twice too.
Does anyone here read Japanese Light Novels? How did you start? Are there any in English?
I'm a total newb and have never read one and have no idea where to begin.
Some guidance would be appreciated.
I liked Durarara and you can get a few titles in english from Yen On

Small market, but it is profound enough to look into, i purchase very few light novels but currently looking into The Devil Is A Part Timer! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
The Japanese light novels that were profound enough for me to buy in native language was Kokoro Connect and Full Metal Panic!, and soon it might be Amagi Brilliant Park I consider buying as well(same auther as FMP)

What's a writer you'd recommend to a drug addict? I want some literature that has something to do not with the aspect of the addiction itself but with the alienation that comes with it.
Dostoievski, Nabokov, Saramago, Pessoa and Milton are some writers I really enjoy.
De Quincey and Baudelaire, for starters.
>>9642713
You're being overly romantic about your alienation.
Just git gud.
Hunter S. Thompson and William Burroughs

I haven't read 2666, but I know it's about murders and such. Can someone explain to me why the cover has all these satyrs and magicians?

Summarize your book/project into a short thesis.
>In no other period of history have the conscious living been so fully aware of their mortality, impact, strength and existence, yet so ready to abandon themselves for the seemingly limitless wonder and eternity of the archive that is the digital world. If we are to ever be brought to our knees and subdued like beasts and livestock, the cause will certainly be our ability to say so little with so much. Vanity and our ability to balance it with curiosity and knowledge, will carry us deep into the universe, so long as we remember to look both up and down.

It is the nature of intelligent civilizations to destroy themselves, that is the answer to the Fermi Paradox. Our solar system is oddly structured, with a garden world between two post-catastrophe worlds, in a sense: Venus demonstrating the devastating effects of unregulated C02 emissions and other harmful atmospheric agents, while Mars demonstrates the world with virtually no atmosphere or magnetosphere to speak of, which happens to be a likely result of nuclear fallout.
>>9642706
That's actually a fun way to look at our Solar System. Besides grimdark, are there any books that deal with the last/final species? Glad you're writing, anon.
>>9642714
I couldn't let your thesis go unanswered.

>Wallace himself has said that the book can be viewed as a dialogue between Wittgenstein and Derrida.
What do I need to read of Wittgenstein and Derrida in order to understand what DFW was trying to do with The Broom of the System?
Can you find the source where he said that?

i dunno none of these books have been read yet, they are the ones on my kindle.
Currently reading Madness and Civilization.
I'm reading through Infinite Jest right now. What other books/writers will make me seem cultured and sophisticated to cool college kids (particularly the ladies)?
College students don't read
Also stop posting bad threads
People will think you're cultured just for reading outside of class in college as long as you aren't reading YA shit. Also in my experience most people read different things.
I read infinite jest and Im in college. Nobody talks about it unless they are making a joke. Great book, dont get me wrong, but dont read it just because you think itll advance you socially.
Marukami is popular on my campus, but Ive yet to read any of his books. I dont know, maybe Keruoac will create some conversation starters.
why don't you focus on bettering yourself to make the world a better place in stead of worrying about your image
Are there any styles of cover better than this? It's simple, but still pretty and elegant with some light decorations like the bands, or similar small epithets. Nice colors are common, like a dark burgundy, burnt sienna, or navy blue.
In addition they look much better together on a shelf when compared to more "shouty" covers. What's this style of cover called?
the cover doesn't sell.
I really like Bible style covered books. Where it's just plain black and it says the title in gold. I firmly believe that Bible design is one of the many reasons Christianity became so popular

my favorite material for book covers is the black imitation leather of bibles.
it combines the best of hardcover and the best of paperback. Very resistant while being ideal for reading in the subway/bus/train/waiting room.
