I've been researching some books to buy as I'm not a reader but want to try. Out of these, which would you recommend most?:
>The Stranger - Albert Camus
>Nausea - Jean-Paul Satre
>The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli
>The Outsider - Albert Camus
>The Double and The Gambler - Fyodor Dostoevsky
>The Manuscript Found in Saragossa - Jan Potocki
>Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse
>The Glass Bead Game - Hermann Hesse
>buying books
the prince
Woah to choose between those should come down to who you are right now OP...
Why start with books like those if you're not already a reader? You will only get bored and never read anything again. Pick up something like Martian by Andy Weir or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams instead.
yo throw me some random short story/film ideas. I don't give a fuck. even a small outline. Or a premise that is simple.
I need some easy ideas. don't even proof read yo shit just type in here.

Do you consider Wonder Woman to be a greek myth?
We're all well aware that Diana's origin is neither ancient nor greek, but that alone should not exclude her. The divine comedy came more than a thousand years late in a very different country, but its lasting popularity and compatability mean it is often considered a part of christian mythos, if not religious doctrine.
Likewise, Diana may be a latecomer, but shes the most well known superheroine of all time, and has been iconic for almost a century. Her status as a myth is not up for debate, but whether her pantheon is the justice league or the olympians is what I want to debate

>The divine comedy ... is often considered a part of christian mythos
By whom? What are your sources?
A better example may have been Paradise Lost. It's shocking how many people unknowingly draw their theology from Milton.
But I see your point. I've always thought the classic DC comics sort of have their own mythos going since the characters have been iconic for so long. I don't know that I'd lump Diana in with Greek mythos, since there are no cultural ties to the source and it's so far removed chronologically.
I consider her part of both. Many civilizations, religions, etc. have differing accounts of the stories within the same lore. You could also argue that non-canonical texts belong by proxy in their pantheon.
What are some of the most fucked up, sadistic, depraved, gut wrenching, violent, creepy, or scary books out there?
I have, but have not read all of the following:
The Cement Factory, Blood Meridian (mild in comparison), The Wasp Factory, House of Leaves, Naked Lunch, Crash, Throne of Bones, The Story of the Eye.
I prefer books with less of an emphasis on sex (ie. The Story of the Eye) but I'm still open to reading them.
I'm really loving The Wasp Factory. I think I'm enjoying it because it's so completely divorced from who I am that it's shocking to read this fucked up kids thoughts. I'm not shocked in the sense that I'm sheltered, just that it's neat noticing the little similarities shared between everyday life and the lives of these depraved characters. Makes you wonder what the cracking point is for some people.

I'm flying out to Paris for the first time tomorrow and can't decide what reading material would best augment my visit. So far I have Baudelaire's Les Fleur du Mal and Sartre's Nausea for light reading. Can't decide whether I should reread Ulysses for the third time but with Gilbert's guide or start reading Proust's Remembrance. I know Joyce wrote a large part of Ulysses in Paris but feel I might miss all the Parisian overtones that I could get with Proust. On the other hand, I feel like since I'll be traveling and sight seeing a lot I may not be able to give Proust the attention he deserves on a first read. Also, I only have Swann's Way at the moment and may not read the rest for some time. Any thoughts /lit/izens?
>>9791524
You have a few shit books with you already, so take Joyce
Proust, definitely.
Nice bait tho, what do you really expect of something like this from an anglo site? Obviously Joyce (a capital name) is gona have all the recognition in retarded vs liek your shitpost.
>>9791524
There aren't any Parisian overtones in Ulysses. Proust would seem the most ideal here, especially in light of your other books.

Is this seriously the foundation of western philosophy and political theory? All he does is use sophistry and false equivalancies to justify his bizzare totalitarian "utopia"
Western society would improve tenfold if this were to be immediately implemented.

reading philosophy 2000 years after it was writen should be iterpreted ad not taken literarrly platos point that can be derved from his writings on the republic were relevant to westeren political theory in the sense that the state should work as a whole rather than having odd parts da do not work in the common good (which is prescribed by the state). Ancient phiosopers weer very idealistic as you can most likely tell by the things they wrote. they lacked the foundation to transcend from the theoretical to how this ideas would acctualy work in practice. what you can dereive from his writigns is that deviation from the norms isnt good for the state in the longterm. This would mostly be applicable in the modern (or post-modern) political theory as the need for the state to establish a value system to keep people from differeing from each other too much. the more similar people are the more they will undersand each other, the more they understand eachother the less conflicts will occure and the less conflict the republic has the more they wil work together as a whole.
