Those books were great tho lowkey
>>9057354
I never read them, only the first series. Were they as good?
>>9057362
I stopped midway through Athena but they're still bretty gud for kids books, Rick Riordan was a pretty decent author and to my memory avoided a lot of the "stretch his legs" type problems people have with Rowling. I may be wrong though it's been a coons age since I read those books. I remember kinda not liking how as the books progressed everything became more played straight, so now instead of the Golden Fleece being like a jacket or something they'd just play it straight, that kinda stuff, but overall it was a decent children's book.
Shit now I want to read them all again.
Whenever I read fiction, I tend to dissociate and feel uncomfortable?
Whats wrong with me?

The best way to learn a language is to read books in that language.
You literally cannot prove me wrong. A vast majority of words are rare in conversation and modern teaching styles are hopelessly impractical. Unless it's something like Greek or Russian or Chinese, once you have the basics, you should just grab a book and try to read it. It will be difficult at first, but you'll get much more out of it than you would by doing grammar exercises.
>>9056967
You need to do live communication and grammar exercises. That's why language courses in native's country is the most effective way to learn. Expanding vocab is the easiest part to do and can be literally done by reading dictionaries, you dumb frogposting shit.
>>9056967
*the best way to learn to read a language is to read books in that language
To speak, reading doesn't help all that much. You have to practice fucking speaking.
>>9056986
If it's so easy, why is it not done more? I cannot tell you how many people I've seen try to learn a language and can't even read the literature in that language. What's the point? You can get more from osmosis from books than from conversation, and you will get a deeper understanding of grammar by seeing how the masters actually use it.
you think he'd be like this if he was good looking and getting blown by models
his wife is model-tier good looking and he probably has sex with her
this proofs that sex doesnt cure autism, being neurotic, and doesnt make you a normie

I received a $500 gift voucher to spend on books from my university.
I don't have my own library (I borrow everything) so I want to use this to start one.
Should I use the money to purchase books that I have already read, but have thoroughly enjoyed, or should I use the money to purchase books that I have not read?
My concern is that someone will see my library, and see the absence of some of the greatest writers (e.g., Shakespeare, Kadare, Pasternak, Joyce, DFW, Pynchon) who I have read, but at the same time, what is the point of purchasing that which I have already read, except for vanity and virtue signalling?
Do both. Vanity is not a sin.
>>9056697
Repurchase the essentials, you may want to re-read them or lend them to people. Alternatively buy the second-hand for wicked cheap.
>>9056697
wtf is a gift voucher. is this something sort of gift card printed on a piece of paper or something ?

>he's shocked and asks me why I abandoned literature
>tell him I haven't and still write on the side and currently going through the process of publishing a short story collection
>he stands back aghast and completely phased

By the way, if your university is just an information-dump then it's a terrible university.

This but unironically.

what's your problem with Penguin publishing? excluding translated works
Stop inventing problems where there aren't any.
>>9056616
Their deluxe editions with the deckled edges are just pure cancer. That and their paperbacks as a whole have a relatively mediocre print quality. Definitely not my first choice for anything other than impulse buys or things only they still publish/published at a reasonable price.
>>9057459
What's your first choice then? I've been looking to make the transition from ebooks to paper but i don't know which publishers are good

W+P
best one I did finish was Proust
Blood Meridian, too much of a slog and a lot of the descriptions just seemed like he was trying too hard to be edgy
