Is it possible to recapture the simple joy of life?
Ever since becoming a sentient adult I feel as if I'm exerting all of my energy just to exist; even if I'm doing nothing at all, that act of doing nothing is as difficult as moving mountains. Mind you, I do a lot, I am not depressed, I am pragmatic about defeating the onset of acedia and such things.
Nonetheless, the tremendous forces which are involved in daily activity have become suspicious to me. I feel like one could power a city with the effort I am putting into typing this post, is this natural? Does everybody feel this? Do some feel it but escape the pain by not knowing? Do some not feel it at all? Am I just that weak?
Is there anyone who has known it, felt it, and then overcome it? And if so, is it possible to do so through philosophy and knowledge, or is the end of all knowledge action? Is philosophy just preparation for that moment? What comes next? What am I on the verge of?
I'm scared.

Why do you write like that? Cringing pretty hard
>>
>>9065403
I'm not a writer, I am cringing too, I knew all this in advance, but it didn't stop me nor did it make me want to write it better. This is all meta, if I turn it into prose then I'm subject to the medium.

Please respond.

Hey /lit/

Where do you go to find books when bookzz doesn't work?

I'm in desperate need of this book, but I'm broke, and I can't find it online.

Has anyone else read this? What did you think?

I loved it but found the ending too compressed.

>>
I want to read it at some point, but it's like a thousand pages long.
>>
>>9065254
Ive read it about 20 times. My mother had it when I was little and I wasnt allowed to watch TV and my access to adult books was very limited (again due to mother confiscating anything that was naughty) so I read this over and over.

As an adult it bothers the fuck out of me that he changed the names and didnt have real battle scenes. Also the sex scenes taught me about sex.

>>9065254
heh i was just playing bureaucracy by infocom. that game is stupidly impossible.

Are Knut Hamsun's novels worth reading?
19 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
All he does in his novels is talk about incoherent religious garbage.
>>
>>9065099
No, he doesn't? Are you thinking of Hermann Hesse?
>>
Of course they are. Hunger is both hilarious and sad at the same time.

why do you hate him?

>>9065061
There's a fucked up video of him putting his unwashed dick in a bowl filled with milk and cereal. He, then, proceed to eat the cereals.

He's a creep.
>>
His work, despite being technically deficient and artistically uninspired, has on a mass scale served to corrupt the youth.
>>
>>9065061
Mostly for his lame youtube stuff and personality.

His fiction is YA so who really cares, not sure why people whinge over it

Looking for some help in French literature from French dudes.

Mainly looking for helpful websites on how to analyze a poem / novel extracts etc..

I already posted here and got helpful suggestions but before I could respond it got archived, trying my luck again.

Also any recommendations on some good French poets/novelists outside of the school subjects?

Looking to broaden my knowledge.

really, Houellebecq

on a side note, the pic-related book is great. It's a collection of short stories, the main one being very famous (but all of them are fine). 20 years ago, every kid would read tales by Marcel Aymé - those called Les contes du chat perché ; I don't think many people still read him, but he writes in a clean, classical manner, and you don't get bored. He's not a "kids" author apart from his tales.

what are some books that are a little bit lighter and fun to read but still literary?

im currently reading a lot of really heavy non-fiction and need something to break it up. any NYRB titles worth checking out?

I was in exactly this spot a month ago, taking a break from months of nonfiction with some novels (decent number of nyrbs). Unfortunately almost all so far have been super depressing; Zweig's "beware of pity" left me emotionally concussed for a few days.

With that said, Kingsley Amis' "Lucky Jim" was absolutely hilarious and, as you said, light. Would absolutely recommend it; I'm considering reading more of him soon.
>>
>>9065068
I second Lucky Jim. Most Amis is pretty good. The Green Man as well.
>>

most fiction qualifies. just avoid 900 page tomes, older stuff, famously difficult book, etc

pick a novel and read it, they take like 6-8 hrs

I had never consdiered the question.

I doubt anyone thinks it only consists of these two.

"My name is not important. What is important is what I'm going to do... I just fuckin' hate this world. And the human worms feasting on its carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred. And I always wanted to die violently. This is the time of vengeance and no life is worth saving. And I will put in the grave as many as I can. It's time for me to kill. And it's time for me to die. My genocide crusade begins here."

One of Murakami's best books desu. It is one of his most surreal works, but the surrealism is not there as a gimmick.

You should watch Haibane Renmei, too. It was heavily inspired by Hardboiled.
>>
It's not my favorite Murakami but the imagery of TEOTW has stuck with me more than anything I've ever read.

Let's suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream you wanted to dream
and you would naturally as you begin on this adventure of dreams
you would fulfill all your wishes.
You would have every kind of pleasure you see
and after several nights you would say
wow that was pretty great
but now let's have a surprise
let's have a dream which isn't under control
Well somethings going to happen to me that I don't know what it's going to be
Then you would get more and more adventurous
and you would make further and further out gambles
as to what you would dream
and finally you would dream where you are now
If you awaken from this illusion
And you understand black implies white
self implies other
life implies death
you can feel yourself
not as a stranger in the world
not as something here on probation
not as something that has arrived here by fluke
but you can begin to feel your own existence as absolute fundamental
what you are basically
deep deep down
far far in
is simply the fabric and structure of existence itself

Bertrand Russel was the libcuck of his day. I don't even disagree with some of his viewpoints but I'm sure he's biased.
>>
>>9064469
The early sections are very informative and tightly written but the chapters about Modern Philosophers are pretty worthless. The section on Schopenhauer is just 3 pages of Russell calling him a worthless hypocrite hack and moving on. I mean that's really not an objective recollection of history,

I'm a dumb fuck who watched too much anime and spent most of my time playing games, I'm sick of them and want to start picking up books.
But the problem is, I don't know where to start. I googled the top /lit/ books and there are so many favourite books it's confusing.

What would you recommend for someone who has never seriously read any literature before? Something easy to start with because looking at difficult words feels intimidating to me. I just want something to start with

Thank you very much.
