One of Murakami's best books desu. It is one of his most surreal works, but the surrealism is not there as a gimmick.

You should watch Haibane Renmei, too. It was heavily inspired by Hardboiled.

It's not my favorite Murakami but the imagery of TEOTW has stuck with me more than anything I've ever read.

i just read this and thought it was sorta shit
the end of the world part was good the hardboiled wonderland part was abysmal. like a YA cyberpunk novel full of obnoxious chosen one bs and lots of cutesy namedropping and pop culture references. the characters are borderline nonexistent.

this; sputnik+kafka+wind up bird are by and large the best, avoid colorless like the plague and everything else is optional desu, just lacking that profound strangeness without feeling as if he's just self indulgent stream of consciousness. which is fine, if it's good prose. which it isn't.

End of the World is quite surreal and beautiful.

The other half is totally forgettable and honestly kind of inane. Hardboiled felt like a half realized world/concept where you never get any sense of fulfillment or direction. You could probably read the End halves and totally ignore the Hard side and then look up a synopsis and you'd just go "oh, I see"
