Both are good guns. If you just want to try something new, you should go with the revolver; the 92A1 is redundant in light of how you already own a PX4.

It will have better ballistic potential, but it will also be more unwieldy. If you want a longer barrel .357, you should get an N-frame like the 627 (holds 8 shots!). For something like the 686, a 3'' or 4'' barrel gives you both good ballistics and nice handling characteristics.

Some others that you should consider:

*The reborn Model 66 (It's a K-frame that fixes the problems the old K-frames had, is available in 2.75'' and 4'')
*Ruger GP100/GP100 Match Champion (Strongest production revolver on the market while being less expensive than a comparable S&W)

It shouldn't be too much really, it's more a question of creating a relatively cheap and mass-produceable (likely polymer-based) material which goes from a solid to gaseous phase with no intermediate liquid transition at the temperatures and pressures experienced inside of a firing chamber during the explosion of the propellant. If that could be done at a cheap cost then the cost per bullet could be comparable or even less than that of standard bullets, considering polymers are in many cases cheaper than metal.
