>Fire, fire, fire, fire. Now you’ve heard it. Not shouted in a crowded theatre, admittedly, as I seem now to have shouted it in the Hogwarts dining hall. But the point is made. Everyone knows the fatuous verdict of the greatly over-praised Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, who, when asked for an actual example of when it would be proper to limit speech or define it as an action, gave that of shouting “fire” in a crowded theatre.

>It’s very often forgotten what he was doing in that case was sending to prison a group of Yiddish speaking socialists, whose literature was printed in a language most Americans couldn’t read, opposing Mr. Wilson’s participation in the First World War, and the dragging of the United States into that sanguinary conflict, which the Yiddish speaking socialists had fled from Russia to escape. In fact it could be just as plausible argued that the Yiddish speaking socialists who were jailed by the excellent and greatly over-praised Judge Oliver Wendell Holmes were the real fire fighters, were the ones shouting fire when there really was a fire in a very crowded theatre indeed.

the design of the cup was such that it made it really fucking easy to spill, especially for an elderly women who aren't the strongest of people. Mind you, too, such a flimsy construction would be harmless without the extremely hot coffee put into the cup (which, by the way, was a temperature dictated by McDonald's protocols)

There are two different definitions of benevolent, though both meaning the same thing the context matters between personal and an organisation.

I need some advice. I am planning to do my PhD in Hispanic Studies in the US, being California my desired destination. However, I am still unsure about which University should I aim to. Apart from a proper reputation, I am looking forward being part of a, say, countercultural atmosphere. I assume we no longer live in the 60s, but still maybe there is a campus more likely to represent that spirit. Any help?

I'm extremely serious about this question, so here me out.

What if in 1962, when Fidel Castro was preparing for a potential nuclear show down, with the Cuban Missile Crisis, instead he turned into a snake?

In this scenario: on that October day, Castro is sitting in his office alone, when suddenly he feels off.

He documents his experience:

>his skin discolors
>it becomes rougher
>his tongue forks
>eyes goes black, it becomes hard to write
>legs shrink into body
>arms shrink into bodies, Hitler can no longer write

The rest of the transformation takes place; what was once a human of normal stature is now a slender creature of significant girth.

This scenario assumes that Castro retains his intelligence. What happens next? The first obstacle would be him to survive until his advisers finds him. Then the next challenge is convincing them who he is. Best case is that he does, but what about everyone else? Is he able to continue his job? How is he treated by peers, the general public, and enemies?

Discuss.

Nothing really because the Cuban Missile Crisis was more between the governments of the US and Russia, with Cuba acting as a puppet state.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/05/22/europe-birthplace-mankind-not-africa-scientists-find/

>The history of human evolution has been rewritten after scientists discovered that Europe was the birthplace of mankind, not Africa.

>Currently, most experts believe that our human lineage split from apes around seven million years ago in central Africa, where hominids remained for the next five million years before venturing further afield.

>But two fossils of an ape-like creature which had human-like teeth have been found in Bulgaria and Greece, dating to 7.2 million years ago.

>Human evolution - Where remains have been discovered
The discovery of the creature, named Graecopithecus freybergi, and nicknameded ‘El Graeco' by scientists, proves our ancestors were already starting to evolve in Europe 200,000 years before the earliest African hominid.

>An international team of researchers say the findings entirely change the beginning of human history and place the last common ancestor of both chimpanzees and humans - the so-called Missing Link - in the Mediterranean region.

>To some extent this is a newly discovered missing link
Professor Nikolai Spassov, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
At that time climate change had turned Eastern Europe into an open savannah which forced apes to find new food sources, sparking a shift towards bipedalism, the researchers believe.

You can't define something you don't know, and just find the answer on a trash can easily.

if you want some answer go to the source and the word, not to the naysayer and hypocrites like the two people above me,

not to mention you're browsing on a website full of racist/atheist/stupid/hillbilly/biased/ people

you can find the answer on the book of St, mark before Paul's writings,

also if you're a christian Which I doubt, then you will already know, Paul of tarsus become an instrument of God, literally it's written on the first paragraph of his book, don't be fucking lazy

only a fool would find some advice on the blind

Which countries period of industrialisation was the most epic and why is it Japan's Meiji Restoration?

Because they went from a shitty feudal state to an imperial power in the span of just a few decades. why didn't China manage to do the same? or Korea?

>>

In the case of china, they were way too arrogant going into the opium wars. They were also the first asian target of imperialism, which meant Japan had the benefit of watching and learning from china's mistakes. Meanwhile Korea was still cucked by China as a vassal, so their affairs were basically dictated by China until Japan came in and replaced them. The Japanese were smart enough to recognize the threat Europeans posed.

I was wondering if some other /his/torians might be willing to try and help me streamline this predicament I was thinking about earlier today. Doubtless it's been thought of before, just presented via a different scenario.

I was thinking about The Road, and from this I tried to consider what someone might do in a similar situation. Basically the problem goes like this:

>A father and son are in a completely hostile land. One unable to sustain any agriculture, and has no fresh sources of water. All supplies must already exist, and consequently are scarce. Further, the quality of these remaining foodstuffs and water supplies are dubious at best. Complicating their situation even more, they have no method to test whether or not the food and water they come across is toxic. This leaves them in a particularly precarious situation where even if food and water can be found, it may not be safe for consumption.

>This forces the father into having to make a difficult decision. He can either A. eat the food/drink the water first, and confirm that they are safe. B. have his son eat the food/drink the water first, in order to confirm that they are safe. Or C. have them both eat the food and drink the water at the same time. If he goes with A, it could kill him - but spare his son. Unfortunately, this will almost certainly condemn his son to death without his father to protect and care for him. If he goes with B, the father is in effect protecting himself, but runs the risk of killing his son each time they drink or eat. And if he goes with C, then neither of them will know if the food/water is poisoned, and could kill them both.

What would you do in this situation? Is there another option? I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Historically, they would have both died, and a group that could keep a growing population through their methods of survival would be the progenitors of a new human era.

It wasn't wise to ask /his/ this. Now-a-days we're half /pol/ half World War autism.
>>
>>2852199

A logical person would say B. It's less about protecting himself and more about the fact that the son would not survive without the father. In the same novel you're quoting there are multiple instances of children being raped or used as a food source by roving gangs of survivors who have abandoned morality. Most people would probably agree that death by consumption of unsafe food is preferable to this.

A case could be made for C, if one of you is going to die from unsafe food, might as well be both of you. The son wouldn't survive without the father and you could argue that the father wouldn't want to live without the son. However this is fuzzy at best because it's a very emotion based argument.

A is the least valid option but a moralistic case can be made, the father is "protecting" his son by eating the potentially dangerous food. One could also argue that as a full grown adult he has a better chance of surviving something that is harmful but not absolutely fatal than a child. However if something were to kill him, he would leave his child to a much worse fate as mentioned before.

Option D which isn't explored in the novel but which is probably best and has a societal precedent is an animal companion that eats any scavenged food first, similar to a mining canary. Probably a cat or small dog would be best. Assuming that the food is unsafe due to radiation from nuclear fallout, there would be no difference in its effects on humans vs. animals.
>>
>>2852305
This, ideally having a trained rat or two would come in handy. But if the kid was old enough to be on his own, I'd eat it first, no question.

Also now that I'm a dad, The Road made me cry when I reread it. McCarthy's fantastic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkRnakd6Gjo

a pretty quick rundown

the take home is that it was 17,000 Italians vs. 120,000 Ethiopians with Russian weapons.

What gets lost in talking about the war was that the Italians didn't have the goal of annexing Ethiopia when they started, as they only fielded 20,000 men for the war. The goal was to expand the border of Italian Eritrea and consolidate territory there.

Of course Italy came back for round 2 with 300,000 men and annexed it.

Will Europe's borders ever be this aesthetic again?

Can all of morality be summarized down to "do not commit theft?"

Rape is the theft of the body

Lying is the theft of truth
