so /his/ I was thinking about economics in the United States and the minimum wage

It seems like the issue has a fan of responses; from high MW to no MW

I was thinking what would happen if the federal government relinquished any laws about the minimum wage and let the individual states decide their economic workforce policies, in this case the minimum wage?

I was thinking what might happen is that more ideologically leaning states like Alabama and California would go extreme and say no MW in Alabama and a $15.00 MW in California, then the more moderate states finding their own balance based on their economies and cultural factors

If that happened, I think we could legitimately see a rise in industry and profitability.

The more conservative states advocating for a smaller or non existent MW could become centers for Industrial growth and allow corporations to use the cheaper labor to produce goods domestically while also using more liberal states keen on using a high MW to sell their domestic goods with their higher wage incomes

Since each state could decide their own stance, the people would be less upset at the national scale if they don't like their state's proposal and deal with it in a smaller scale with a more reactive state government that has less chores and duties than the federal government

The potentially revitalized industrial states could drastically improve domestic industry and number of cheap and intermediary goods and the high income states could benefit from buying and turning the goods around into more valuable and luxury goods

What are your thoughts? On minimum wage? On autonomizing the states in other ways? On ways to stimulate the national economy on such a vast country?

States can already set their own minimum wage, just not below the federal minimum wage of 7.25.

I wonder how the US will cope with the increasing use of automation in the economy. Some jobs are more difficult to automate than others, but how long will the trend of automation continue before joblessness due to automation reaches a point in which the government is forced to act. Will they simply tax it to prevent the shift in the workforce for as long as possible? Will they introduce a living wage? Will the oligarchical mess we and our predessesors made simply collapse in itself?

As an american, it kinda feels like our people don't talk much about Americans before the independence movement.

It just goes "pilgrims" (before or after they came to the new world for "religious freedom" is never explained more than that) and then Boston Tea party stuff, maybe a mumble or two about the French-Indian war.

I may be getting this wrong, but it seems like the public (and thus not including history nerds) has no knowledge whatsoever on this one crucial part of American history.

Let alone the influences from the old world that shaped Americans, like the English Civil war and Glorious Revolution.

There were no "Americans" before the independence movement. There were Virginians and New Yorkers etc... etc...

I'm not sure if this belongs on here or on /k/, but here goes.

In both WW1 and WW2, the British Empire's fleet was substantially stronger than Germany's. However, the margin was enormously less in WW1 than it was in WW2. However, it was WW2, not WW1, that the Germans managed to slip ships out of the North Sea and go raiding on British convoys with more than just u-boats. How the hell did that happen? What changed that let them get out?

>However, it was WW2, not WW1, that the Germans managed to slip ships out of the North Sea and go raiding on British convoys with more than just u-boats. How the hell did that happen? What changed that let them get out?

Two main reasons:

1: In WW2, the KM objective was to intensify convoy raiding as much as possible, even with the addition of surface ships, because they knew they'd never be able to directly challenge the RN in open battle. In WW1, with a larger fleet, they believed they could directly challenge the RN in open battle, and so sought to defeat the RN, instead of go convoy raiding. Another major factor here is that in WW1, the KM had only a few small ports in northern Germany that they could retreat to, so without colonial infrastructure, if they made it past the blockade, the RN could quite literally chase them around the Atlantic until they ran out of coal, by stationing a large fleet close to the German mainland, forcing them to either spend the war cooped up in a neutral port, or fight an engagement at the mouth of their own ports, while in WW2, all of the northern European coastline, from Norway to France was occupied, giving them hundreds of potential retreat points, and making the RN preventing their retreat much more difficult.

2: In WW1, Germany was the only central power with anything resembling a battle-ready fleet, so the RN could concentrate its efforts on the North Sea blockade. In WW2, the RN was engaged against the IJN in East Asia, and the RM in the Mediterranean, both theatres requiring the spreading of RN resources, manpower, and ships, leading to a much smaller North Sea blockade force.

The answer is that German WW2 battleships were just really damn fast compared to most other battleships. Scharnhorst and her sister both topped out at around 31 knots, whereas most British battleships topped out around 23 knots. The switch from coal to gasoline as the primary power source also allowed for much greater range, allowing a small group of warships to operate much more independently than was possible during WW1. But Britain's superior numbers still meant that German ships were mostly confined to the Baltic Sea and North Sea. They did occasionally get something into the Atlantic, but that was a rare and risky thing. After Bismark was lost, no more sorties into the Atlantic were attempted because they simply couldn't afford any more losses.
>>

>The switch from coal to gasoline as the primary power source also allowed for much greater range

This is not really true.

The Konig-class dreadnoughts were equipped with coal fueled steam turbines, and had a range of about 8,000nmi, while the Bismarck, with its oil powered boilers, only had a range of 8,500nmi.

The only difference was the efficiency of the ranges, the Konig-class being capable of such range at a cruising speed of around 12 knots, while the Bismarck's cruising speed was 19 knots.

Muhammad was a white man
>While we were sitting with the Prophet in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied, "This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of 'Abdul Muttalib."
A white man who owned black slaves
>I came and behold, Allah's Apostle was staying on a Mashroba (attic room) and a black slave of Allah's Apostle was at the top if its stairs. I said to him, "(Tell the Prophet) that here is 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (asking for permission to enter)." Then he admitted me.

This reads like a chronicle of pure idiocy:
>Mussolini's Under-Secretary for War Production, Carlo Favagrossa, had estimated that Italy could not possibly be prepared for major military operations until at least October 1942. This had been made clear during the Italo-German negotiations for the Pact of Steel, whereby it was stipulated that neither signatory was to make war without the other earlier than 1943. Although considered a great power, the Italian industrial sector was relatively weak compared to other European major powers. Italian industry did not equal more than 15% of that of France or of Britain in militarily critical areas such as automobile production: the number of automobiles in Italy before the war was around 374,000, in comparison to around 2,500,000 in Britain and France. The lack of a stronger automotive industry made it difficult for Italy to mechanize its military. Italy still had a predominantly agricultural-based economy, with demographics more akin to a developing country (high illiteracy, poverty, rapid population growth and a high proportion of adolescents) and a proportion of GNP derived from industry less than that of Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Sweden, in addition to the other great powers. In terms of strategic materials, in 1940, Italy produced 4.4 megatonnes (Mt) of coal, 0.01 Mt of crude oil, 1.2 Mt of iron ore and 2.1 Mt of steel. By comparison, Great Britain produced 224.3 Mt of coal, 11.9 Mt of crude oil, 17.7 Mt of iron ore, and 13.0 Mt of steel and Germany produced 364.8 Mt of coal, 8.0 Mt of crude oil, 29.5 Mt of iron ore and 21.5 Mt of steel. Most raw material needs could be fulfilled only through importation, and no effort was made to stockpile key materials before the entry into war. Approximately one quarter of the ships of Italy's merchant fleet were in foreign ports at the outbreak of hostilities, and, given no forewarning, were immediately impounded.

>On 2 February 1940, however, Mussolini approved a draft contract with the Royal Air Force to provide 400 Caproni aircraft; yet he scrapped the deal on 8 February. The British intelligence officer, Francis Rodd, believed that Mussolini was convinced to reverse policy by German pressure in the week of 2–8 February, a view shared by the British ambassador in Rome, Percy Loraine.
So even as late as February 1940, Mussolini had a chance to back off and join the other side.

In the modern world, advocating for socialism always seems to come hand in hand with advocating for multiculturalism and diversity.

Was this always the case? If not, when did this occur?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2855814
It was always the case, because Socialism was always global in scope and aim. Socialism wants a One World Government that controls the means of production.
>>
>>2855814

No it doesn't, there are plenty of closed borders socialists, they're just out of fashion with the youth so you don't hear much about them. For example, Jeremey Corbyn, the leader of the British Labour Party, is in favor of restricting or outright ending immigration because he understands that immigration only serves to drive down wages and harms the working poor.
>>
>>2855814

there was no multiculturalism in marxists states, there was just a sort of national identity folklore with lots of ''brotherhood and unity'' or equivalent, the whole point was your culture didnt matter, youre gonna do as romans do while in rome and thats that, integrate assimilate, cause no problems
