I remember the Egyptian using them as archers (Nilotic and Sudanese Kushitics) and the Moors using slaves-soldiers chained together in the las navas (and some Morocan dinasties used them as a kind of Mameluke/Close slave soldier).

If you want info on the Angevin Empire, then go to Gillingham, and his material. Dunbabin and Brian Golding are good as well.

Firstly, nobody lived there. Very sparse, no cities, not much.
Then the spanish came, and they failed to make this area commercially viable, but at least settled it.
When Napoleon took Spain, the locals decided they will govern themselves. A war took place to ensure this.
Then some civil wars took place to decide if they want to be federal or centralized.
And after that two centuries of trying every type of government thats fashionable at the moment.
