Were Black warriors used as mercenaries by non black empires/kingdoms?

I remember the Egyptian using them as archers (Nilotic and Sudanese Kushitics) and the Moors using slaves-soldiers chained together in the las navas (and some Morocan dinasties used them as a kind of Mameluke/Close slave soldier).
Egypt used them all the time for obvious reasons of proximity. And of course during the imperialist era European powers had mostly African troops keeping order in their colonies in Africa.

About the comic or the black warriors? If the later it's easy to find in any book than deals with Andalusian warfare or something, they were pretty famous because they were chained and were even more savage than the regular moors.
The Comic is called Las Navas and it's only in Spanish.
