Hmmm.....
Is actually possible that the Rape of Nanking,(which don't get me wrong it did happen and it's a documentable fact) was committed by Muslims in the Imperial Japanese Army, or did Muslims dress up like Japanese and did the deed itself and that no Japanese soldier actually did the crime? Just asking the questions here. Its a hypothetical question.
hmm....*thinks*

Holy fuck, why didn't i think of this before?!

>what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.
Is he right, \his\? Do democracies need some revolutions in order to maintain liberty?
Pretty sure Jefferson never expected our system to be as stable as it is.
>>3259136
Yes, the trash needs to be taken out every once and a while.
He has it backwards. The problems with democracy originate from the people, not the leaders. The people get lazy and arrogant, demanding more and more from their leaders, while being less and less wiling to spend five fucking hours critically thinking about who they should vote for. If the Leaders of a democracy are inefficient, it is either the people's fault, or it is not really a democracy. This whole meme that every politician's endgame is to become dictator is totally innacurate, just like the meme that standing armies will eventually form a junta. The united states military proved jefferson wrong on that point, and our presidents have proved him wrong on leaders being inherently power hungry.
Why didn't Hannibal destroy Rome after the battle of Cannae?
Destroying Rome cannae be done lad
>>3259030
Because he couldn't. He couldn't even take Nola right after Cannae, and Rome itself was much more heavily fortified.

So lately with the whole "we wuz kangz" I really wanna educate myself better on Egypt(on their race and history) and just history in general , but I don't know what books I can trust on this . Same goes with the Civil War , since the whole remove Confederate statues is going on I don't want to get in an agrument with someone and not know my facts. I'm pretty sure Lincoln wasn't a good person and the Civil War wasn't just about slavery ,but I sound freakin stupid if I don't research it.
I'm super paranoid about history books lying after reading about how the holocaust may not of happened and I want to make sure I read the truth . So are there books about WWll or just Germany that tells what really happened ?
Oh and the Vietnam War! I wanna write a Vietnam x America fanfic
So yeah if anyone knows any good recommendations about those things and like Greece,Prussia,Rome,Revolutionary War, Crusades ,and just any history books y'all like I'd appreciate it (^.^)
>>3258683
>Greece
Rise of Athens or Persian Fire or Alexander the Great
>Prussia
Iron Kingdom
>Rome
SQPR or Caesar or Rome's Last Citizen.
>be france
>see too much war going on for the majority of your history
>want to stop the fighting, too tired to fight on
>everyone calls you a pussy because of it
>this meme is eternally with you forever
Is this what you wanted, historians?
More like
>Don't want to launch stupid fucking offensives
>Still stay in position to defend
>Get called a pussy
>>3258543
>be France
>cause huge wars, terrible loss of life, toppling empires and altering Europe as you go
>suddenly want to stop fighting because for once the rest of Europe is equally matched as you
It's all well and good when France is the powerhouse and they can use their military might to stomp Europe, but when the boot is on the other foot they want to stop the game. Not surprising really

Why were the Canadian so useless in WW2 despite performing admirably in WW1?
Canadians did fine in both wars.
>>3258408
What makes you think they were useless?
>>3258421
Because Dieppe is the only thing involving Canadians in WW2 he's ever heard of, and it went badly; that's my guess anyway.
Is Mugabe Ataturk of Africa?
As a Turk i really respect Mugabe. I see him as my spiritual leader. In 2050, when we outbreed wh*Tes in Europe and start to genocide the remaining, we will make sure that there'll be a huge statue of him in the middle of Europe.
Better question anon
Is Ataturk the Africa of Mugabe?
In a meme timeline where the US and Britain never got over their tsundere phase and considered each other rivals instead of natural fuckbuddies, when's the earliest that the US could've successfully won a large-scale war against the British Empire?
Scenario 1.) US has to take and hold Canada until the British come to terms that result in its annexation
Scenario 2.) Burger troops have to raise their flag over Buckingham palace
World War 1, anything before that would have resulted in the USA getting creamed. The 18th and 19th centuries were the peak of British power.
>>3258230
>Imlplying the UK was a land military power
>>3258174
>when's the earliest that the US could've successfully won
Zero chance. The revolution was their only time that more than just the original states could have been annexed without diplomacy like the Louisiana Purchase.
The British up until WW2 were far ahead of the US in military power and strength.
We are talking about A nation that was the mastermind behind the Fall of the Ottoman Empire, Prussian Empire, Austiran Empire and the subjugation of India.
Muh Freedom from tyranny and muh 2nd amendment was not gona win any war against the British.
How did the English become so easily overran in the 1066 conquest?
>>3257925
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stamford_Bridge
The Anglos lost a ton of soldiers in previous battles and a ton of them left Harold's army to harvest crops
>>3257933
You do realize that the fyrd that fought at Stamford didn't march south to fight at Hastings, it was an entirely different force (except for Harald's personal housecarls), that fought that battle, right?
The bulk of the losses sustained at Stamford would not have impacted Harald's ability to fight at Hastings at all.
>>3257925
Still though, the above anon is right in the essentials; the feudal in fact if not in name system that the English were using in the Mid-11th century was horribly backwards and left England with little abiltiy to mobilize as a unit against external threats. In addition to the forces that left between Stamford and Hastings, Harald was more or less forced to make his decisive stand then and not later because of the requirements of his fyrd to end their services, and he couldn't oppose William's crossing the channel because his navy went "yep, our time's up, have fun with the invasion."
In contrast, the system you see William using of paid soldiers raised by financial levies to the overlord is much more flexible for this sort of thing. If the campaign runs a bit longer than expected, it might cost you more dosh, but unless you actually run out (and if you're plundering the countryside as you go, that's not likely to happen, at least for a little while), affords you much more in the way of options.

Ancient ships like the trireme:
Did they use the oars all the time or only in battle and close to the shore?
>>3257912
I imagine it was light, smooth rowing in non-combat situations or at calm sea, while in rough seas and combat they rowed with all their strength.
Good thread OP.
I'm not informed on the subject but I'm pretty sure their main function would be to create speed for ramming, and to be able to quickly disengage from the wreck of a rammed ship to avoid being rendered immobile.
>>3257912
No idea.
What I do know is that in battle they actually take the masts down.
How did the Prussian become so easily overran in 1806?
Because Prussia and by extension Germany has a meme-tier military that collapsed when facing actual opposition
The French used their oldest trick, they approached the Prussian encampment with their trademark white flag and then slaughtered everyone when they least expected it.
>>3257897
unlike their enemy the Prussian army didn't change since Frederick the II's times and they were a little too afraid and/or confident in that system and organization that the veteran army of France that had been modernized due to a decade of fighting simply destroyed them. Apparently the army was also full of conservative old officers who refused to modernize.
Is there a single major historical figure born before 1500 that wouldn't disgust modern humans in some way? I can't think of a single known person of that time who didnt either engage in or support something that we now find morally apalling.
Columbus was a pretty despicable person by modern standards, at least according to what I've read. Oftentimes, people use that to justify their support for removing monuments and public artwork dedicated to him, which makes some sense I guess. But as far as I can tell, very few people would protest a statue commemorating Genghis Khan, or Montezuma II despite the fact that they were probably even worse.
I heard Columbus was bad even for the time. I haven't read any contemporary accounts so I can't tell you if that's bullshit or not
