What's that tablet talking about?

It's a piece of the Ba'al Cycle

I speak the mysterious and nearly extinct language of French. Soon to go the way of Gaelic, this obscure language can barely be heard anywhere in Quebec anymore, as the youth have long ago adopted English even when talking amongst themselves. When our latest census revealed that other speakers of this arcane tongue called "French" are in a far higher rate of decline in this province than expected, the federal government cooked the data to hide the decline and blamed the initial numbers on a computer bug.
Why didn't any other countries help Finland defend itself from the Soviets during the Winter War? It seems very sad that the entire world just sat back and nobody bothered to send troops to help them out.
Sweden sent volunteers and i believe Britain sent some equipment and supplies.
IIRC there were plans for a volunteer force to be sent but Norway and Sweden wouldn't allow them access across their land

The US only got into WWII because Japan was allied with Germany. We barely even wanted to help Britain with the lends lease. I think we may have even been importing Volkswagens at the time.

Inaccurate, but in a completely different way.
I used to have a high res version of that.
If anyone can make it out, there's a country in EVROPA called Welschland, which is actually Italy. Welsh is the word Germans used to refer to Latin speakers on the Continent, while the Anglo-Saxons used it to refer to the Native Britons on Britain
Were japanese castles useful at all? I've read most of them were never directly attacked, and were mostly a symbol of power.
>>3267890
But that's not true at all.
Sieges were't exactly the same but it was similar enough with soldiers scaling walls etc.
I think at least one of them was burned down and the emperor's palace was set on fire more than once.
>>3267890
The main tactic in sieges in the late medieval period was to surround the castle and starve the defenders out.
That alone shows they were effective in their purpose.
> I've read most of them were never directly attacked
Most surviving castles were built in the Edo period. When the Edo period began no one expected it would be 250 years of unprecedented peace, so they continued to build fortifications of the latest type for some decades after the fighting ended.
Is he right? He has a strong shot at being the next Pope?
>In April 2012, the election of a young gay man who was living in a registered same-sex partnership to a pastoral council in Vienna was vetoed by the parish priest. After meeting with the couple, Schönborn reinstated him. He later advised in a homily that priests must apply a pastoral approach that is "neither rigorist nor lax" in counselling Catholics who "don't live according to [God's] master plan".[38]
>Schönborn is a member of the Elijah Interfaith Institute Board of World Religious Leaders.[31]
>Elijah Interfaith Institute is a nonprofit, international, interfaith organization which was founded by Rabbi Alon Goshen-Gottstein in 1997.

No he's a liberal modernist heretic. I hope he'll never become pope and likely will never be. The liberal cardinals who elected pope Francis regret doing that because he is too liberal for their liking. So shornborn will likely never become pope.
During my (shitty) education, I was taught that the Russians mainly provided almost nothing more than sheer numbers to throw at the Germans on the Eastern front. The Russians were incompetent militarily, their military tech was sub-par, but they made up for it in numbers. "For every Russian the Germans killed, there were 10 more waiting behind him to take his place."
Anyone have any recommended readings to understand why this is just more horseshit American exceptionalism propaganda? I've been looking, but I can't find anything specifically refuting the lack of military prowess on the part of the USSR.

It's really more Wehrmacht propaganda than American stuff; but for a long time the only sources that academics this side of the iron curtain had was German sources, since the Soviets didn't often want to open their own archives.
As for good sources, try these.
http://usacac.army.mil/cac2/cgsc/carl/download/csipubs/connor.pdf (Concerning Bagration, but a good show into late war Soviet tactics and operations)
http://www.history.army.mil/html/books/104/104-21/cmhPub_104-21.pdf (German perspective in 1941-42, they had a much rougher time of it than is generally believed)
https://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/staff/mharrison/public/lendlease.pdf (Economic analysis of Lend-Lease).
One thing I would very much like to point out is that for all the talk of "Unending slavic hordes", the Soviets never had a 2:1 frontwide numbers advantage until 1945, when the German army was pretty much shattered beyond repair. They got good at massing much more than that at the points of their thrusts, but if you think about it, that's really just operations 101. The Germans got a local 3:1 advantage out of slight numerical inferiority at the battle of Sedan, and nobody talks about that as being some kind of special feat, or the Germans zerg-rushing their way to victory.

>It's really more Wehrmacht propaganda than American stuff
Interesting, I had never considered that. I always assumed it was created to jive with the typical "America won WW2, not the Soviets" message that a lot of American public schools have taught since the 50s.
Extremely good links, my man. Much appreciated!
I doubt anyone informed will call Soviet military tech sub-par. The Soviets produced lots of quality stuff that helped tip the ballance on the battlefield. Germans were shocked when they first discovered tanks like KV-1 and T-34, they had to completely upgrade their entire AT weaponry because none of it could penetrate them. The KV had such a thick armor they had to drag 88mm Flaks with them because it was the only weapon that could counter it.

He very genuinely brought the world close to a nuclear exchange simply by overspecializing the entire U.S. military around bombers and ICBM's to such an extent that the President's options for dealing with any crisis would be limited to:
1. Nuke 'em.
2. Don't nuke 'em.......yet.

Why do people keep posting this picture? What are they trying to prove? It's common knowledge that oil, gold, and diamonds are completely useless to a developing nation.
The common argument, usually accompanied by that misattributed Charles Darwin quote about negros and diamonds, seems to be that the Africans are squandering their natural resources similar to how lottery winners often end up in financial insolvency despite their sudden boons. Also oil, gold, and diamonds are absolutely useful for developing nations. Case in point OPEC countries and India, whose GDP is bolstered by its giant diamond industry.
Also most Africaposters who keep asking why the continent is shit aren't really interested in an actual answer.

Now that we had a movie about Dunkirk, will we get some more to depict all the brave and glorious evacuations/retreats that compose British military history?
Now that people have actually seen Dunkirk, will it ruin the /int/poster's (You) farm?
