I'll tell you the first time I saw one. I didn't even know it was a specter, just thought it was my neighbor. I was walking home from work one night and I saw my neighbor standing in the field near the end of our block. I thought it was peculiar because it was almost 2 in the morning. I waved to him but all he did was stared at me nd watched me pass. I got home and showered and looked out my window and their he was, still standing in the field, only this time he was staring right into my window. For some reason it looked like his eyes and mouth grew dark and began to expand but I chucked it up to it being dark. When I went up stairs I looked out my bedroom window and their he was again, only this time looking into his own window. This kinda continued for a few days on my route home so the next day when I saw his wife outside I asked what he was doing out in the field after dark (he was an old man and I worried about him sometimes) and I had come to find out he had been dead for just under a month. It was such a perplexing feeling because I had seen him in his yard standing around a few times and thought nothing of it. Even the wife said she had once thought she saw him standing around but took it up as grief. I remember distinctly feeling a crippling fear for a few moments after she had told me he passed. Sometimes when I am going past my old place I look at the field to see if he is still standing their.

Now if you want to say that story is fake, than you can pretty much make up any story and believe that with no evidence at all, but you know it's bs.

-When did Castaneda and his work become an interest to you?

"In 2006, I published a novel entitled A Separate Reality. It’s about a New Age crisis of faith. I was interested in the impact of philosophies that advocate the erasure of the ego as a path toward enlightenment on those whose egos are already pretty tenuous – particularly young queer people. The narrator tries to survive the perils of middle school by following the precepts of Carlos Castaneda, among others. Things don’t go so well.

Since it’s quite hard to promote literary fiction these days, several people suggested that I write a non-fiction piece to help bring attention to the novel. At that point, I knew absolutely nothing about Castaneda’s life. So the immediate topic that occurred to me was “Whatever Happened to Carlos Castaneda?” As luck or fate would have it, I began to work on this the same month that the bones of his adopted daughter and lover, Nuri Alexander, were finally identified. The more I researched, the more people I spoke to, the stranger the story became. In 2007, I published a piece in Salon entitled The Dark Legacy of Carlos Castaneda. It focused on the disappearances of the five women. But by the time it came out, I knew that this was just the tip of the iceberg. And so I began working on a biography. Which has consumed me ever since."

-There was a point in my life, years ago, where many people I knew loved Castaneda and his work, and thought of him as this great teacher and philosopher. Even back then I found his work to be transparently fake. In your opinion is it pretty much universally accepted that he made it all up at this point?

"I wouldn’t exactly say that Castaneda 'made it all up.' He just happened to be a brilliant plagiarist. When don Juan opens his mouth, it’s invariably someone else’s words coming out. So it’s not necessarily foolish to find wisdom in Castaneda’s writing. You are often reading re-worked versions of everyone from Jean Paul Sartre to Wittgenstein to the Buddha. Carlos was particularly well-versed in phenomenology. The problem is that all of this has nothing whatsoever to do with the Yaqui Indians. Castaneda did make up don Juan. The books are novels, and he’s a fictional character. No reasonable person who is open to the evidence can deny this. Among professional anthropologists, this is pretty much universally acknowledged. The number of holdouts are miniscule, and they are mostly people who had a personal relationship with Carlos. Outside of anthropology, there’s no universal agreement on anything. People think Obama is a Muslim with a fake birth certificate and people believe that there was a real person on whom don Juan was based, and that Castaneda studied with him. He did not. The evidence is far better for the existence of the Loch Ness monster. But what are you going to do?"

-How did you become involved with the group behind 4missingwomen.com?

"Dave Marin contacted me in December 2013. My role has been to provide whatever information I can. This isn’t the focus of my book, but I’ve spent more than eight years researching Castaneda and those around him so I know a lot, and this stuff can be very hard to keep track of."

I saw a weird glowing, leg and faceless, upper torso in my bedroom as a kid. I hid under my covers a lot as a kid, and I had to go to the bathroom, and when I got up I saw it and freaked out and ran out my room to the bathroom. Never saw it again. As an adult I look back and assume it was sleep paralysis. Might have been a spirit or something though, who knows.
