The Wendigo:

Like I said, it comes mostly from Algonquian folklore but exists under the same, or a different name, in other NA tribes. The Wendigo is generally the Native American satan of the woods so to speak. A monster that stalks the deep forests seeking to cause harm to men. It can kill/eat/trick men, or make men turn evil and greedy and turn on their fellow man. In this case, a medice man can sometimes cure the afflicted of the influence of the Wendingo. Another interpretation, has the Wendigo be an evil spirit that can possess a man who becomes too greedy, turning him into a violent man, or sometimes a cannibal, once again, a medicine man or shaman can cure the afflicted. A third interpretation offers that The Wendigo is a condition/state of mind/mental issue or an outright disease, that causes men to turn wicked and evil, and become cannibals.

A fourth interpretation has been presented by white colonists, as a semi-scientific explanation, once again the Wendigo is considered a disease, the Wendigo Fever, much like Cabin Fever, that causes men to, unexplainably, commit extremely violent acts in situations that don't warrant it (getting lost in a forest by walking 20 feet of a very visible trail, then ouright cannibalising your companions).

Popular culture, besides internet culture, got The Wendigo mostly right. Stephen King makes adopts the first interpretation as The Wendigo as an evil entity that lives in the woods, seeking to cause evil or eat people. The game Until Dawn portrays the Wendigo in the light of the first, second and third interpretations, where all those who practise cannibalism are possessed by the Wendigo spirit, the chief of them, the original Wendigo, is called Makkapetiew. However in the game the spirits also drive people to cannibalism so they can possess them.
