it always confused me that people would argue about fallout 3 vs new vegas or fallout 4 vs new vegas considering new vegas was doing it's own thing, whereas fallout 3 and fallout 4 are both trying to do the same thing, so which of them does it better?

In Fallout 4, which your example is from, temporal AA introduces a ridiculous amount of blur while in motion. It is much cheaper than MSAA but if you only care about still images then SMAA is better, it also eliminates jaggies when still and doesn't blur the screen much at all.
