Because back then, they had limits to filesize and graphics/sound and had to actually think and be creative and put effort in, not just slap some cutscene shit together and tout the graphics as the most important thing then sell it on Steam with a 50gb download but only 20hrs tops of actual gameplay.

Both parts of Act Raiser are basically good. The city builder is fun, the action game is fun. I don't remember how much the two actually feed into each other, though. I think you can get spells and other items in the city builder to make your life easier in the action segments, and the action segments in turn unlock more city building or affect it somehow.

Another element that works in their favor is discretion. Maybe it was an accident of hardware and engineering limitations but you couldn't really stop the action game cold and force the player out to manage a complaint from the peasants in one of the towns. So it never nags the player like later games attempts at doing multiple genres tend to.

Best game in the series right there.

Tropico 6 looks neat. Doing the Evil Genius thing of stealing the landmarks of the world. Plus the island connection thing seems cool too.

Now we just need Evil Genius 2 to hurry up and we're good.

I've only played Tropico 3 and 5. I liked 3 a lot, but I wasn't too keen on the changes made in 5. The multiplayer was neat though; I don't remember if 3 had multiplayer. Anyway, Tropico 6 has some neat ideas but I'm not going to take the risk of buying it to find out if they pull it off well. I have a pretty significant backlog anyway.

It would be nice if it gave you the option to choose your characters every time you're about to meet randos instead of only with certain characters.

at the very least you're still given that option after you enter the town. I agree that the randomly-selected miis seem to be shit over half the time. It's always better to go in and fix the assigned characters.

Does a game address the human condition? Does it strive to illuminate truths? If so, does it do so effectively, or during the experience are you routinely reminded that you are being told these things?

Story in games is almost always bad. Read some books if you want to understand see examples of good storytelling.

There are games based on that principle but it continues to be done poorly.
Reigns is the one that comes to mind the most. You play as a line of kings with the penultimate goal of outsmarting the Devil.
But it's mostly RNG with very little choices you make actually doing anything to the world overall.
Shrouded Isles is kinda similar too, but it's really a management game.

Ideally I'd prefer the personal, face-to-face ruling rather than the huge, world changing actions. I want to sit in a position of power and have an advisor at my side, questioning and complimenting my actions and judgments.

If there was a game that heavily focused on specifically the kind of thing Inquisition's throne room segments cover that'd be ideal.

I bet I would have at least double of that with everything counted.
