Daggerfall is generic and copypasted (way more than skyrim or oblivion) with shitty mechanics. It's put on a pedestal because of its age. Tons of people assume that it must be better because it's old and they heard it's big. Graphics are the least of its worries.

I've been making games for over 20 years and I'm seriously disillusioned by ordinary funding paths for game development.
Publishers are basically pimps, including platform holders. Neither has the players' or devs best interests at heart and the best scenario for a publisher is a golden handcuffs scenario in which you're financially bound to them and make enough to continue providing them content, but not enough to pursue your own goals. Maybe not everyone is like this, but it's incredibly hard to find a good situation without knowing the right people, and I'm idiologically opposed to that kind of shit. Everyone should be on the same playing field and your work should speak for itself.
Kickstarter and alpha funding seem like a fucking psyop. Why are we encouraging people to promise shit they can't deliver? Kickstarter sounds like a great idea except in practice it's basically a pre-order for nearly finished shit (unless you have name recognition and can ger by on some concept art), and plus they're owned by Amazon... and only accept Amazon payments last I checked. Which means Amazon is double dipping, taking 5% on the payment then 5% for the platform, which is dishonest as hell. Fuck them. And alpha funding just pisses me off. What happened to "it's ready when it's done"? Worse than that, how many great games are the result of major changes late in development? If you sell an unfinished product, you basically lock yourself into an unfinished conception of your shit and totally preclude a late-game eureka moment. Plus seriously why would you want to let people play something that doesn't live up to your vision? You're robbing them of your actual intention.
Shit like patreon seems like a step in the right direction, but they only support shit like credit cards and paypal, right? As games become worse and people become less inclined to spend what little money they have on shit that is probably bad, it makes sense to fish for whales, I guess... (char limit)

What's really shitty is that traditional marketing is pretty much dead. Even if you don't need external funding, it makes sense to do a bullshit kickstarter in order to promote your game (which totally undermines anybody who actually needs to use kickstarter). "Journalists" no longer respect or support independent developers, even though they're parasites who live off the hard work of actual creators. And nobody reads them anymore anyway. At best they refactor your press releases. This is all completely fucked up and perverts what these resources are ostensibly meant for.
