Despite having played a lot of RPGs, I don't really get Fate. I understand the mechanics and all, but I don't really *get* it. I've never played it and I haven't seen it being played, so I'm having a really hard time visualizing what it actually looks like.

On one hand, it seems like a looser narrative system, but on the other, there's a fuckton of rules and clauses and special exceptions for everything. It honestly feels like a confused system that doesn't really know what to do with its ideas. Yet a lot of people who've actually played it find it really good, so I figure I'm just not understanding the magic.

But seriously though, how do you play this game? What does it feel like in action? How complicated is it in practice? What do you *do* during the session?

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me some experiences about this thing. I'd really like to figure it out, but I'm not really even sure how I'd start a game with it.

I mainly use Fate Accelerated when I want to run a random one-shot and don't feel like building a system from scratch and don't want the players to spend a lot of time just building characters. It's kind of a utility system for me, especially when I've got a group that isn't all familiar with any one system, because it's really easy to teach and learn.

It's got a lot of weaknesses as a system, and it ends up being a system that works best the less you actually use it. As in, relying on its mechanics only when its absolutely necessary to resolve something. Typically, the games I run with it end up being heavily focused on the story, with dialogue, exploration, and investigation being the key focuses, since I find the combat to be finicky at best and cumbersome at worst.

It's also EXTREMELY important to explain the philosophy behind the game to the players, and to make sure that they understand they're going to have to detach themselves at times from their characters in order to make the story and game more interesting. Players who treat the game as "find the objective, complete the objective" type of game where they strive to have their characters succeed at any cost are just not going to have as much fun as players who are actively thinking about how to make the story more interesting and dynamic, and to actually make their flaws pronounced and to have real consequences (all without simply sabotaging the groups fun. It can be quite a challenge to get the right balance of "flawed" without simply being "utterly unlikable").

There's definitely a learning curve to the game, where it's easy to learn the rules, but it takes some time to really get an understanding of what works best with the system.

That's just me though. Some people use the system to its full extent, but I've found a casual approach with the Accelerated rules works best for me.

I am also interested in figuring out more about this, as I am still kind of intimidated by some of the stuff in this system. And this is coming from someone who has almost mastered Mutants and Masterminds 3e's crazy customization.
>>
Why the fuck do they always advertise this thing as a "rules light, fast, intuitive" rpg? It's like 300 pages or rules minutiae and a shitload of mechanics explained in a really unintuitive way.

If I was new to rpgs and someone slapped this in front of me and claimed it's a good, simple one to start with, I'd probably run and never take another look at the hobby.

Imagine that you have a sci-fi/space opera setting with spaceships, laser guns, internet-connected computers and smartphones, televisions, memory uploads and VR sensoriums, artificial intelligences, bioaugmentations and cybernetic implants, cloning, and so on. People travel to different planets.

However, all of it is literally magic. The spaceships are highly advanced spelljammers, the laser guns project arcane force, the internet-connected computers and smartphones are matrices of divination and illusion, the televisions work through scrying, the memory uploads and VR sensoriums work ala Planescape's Society of Sensation, the artificial intelligences are incorporeal constructs, the bioaugmentations and cybernetic implants are biomancy, the clones are simulacra and necromantic clones, and so on. People travel not only to different planets, but to different planes of existence as well.

Is it still a sci-fi/space opera setting?

I have already been running a mix of Planescape's Great Wheel and 4e's World Axis as this for ~270 sessions and counting, and I was wondering how to classify this kind of setting. I cannot quite call it "science fantasy" because there is very little science to it.

>>
It would still be science fantasy. the people within the universe are applying the scientific method, making rational observations about the rules of their universe and using it to advance both their understanding and their mastery of those rules and forces. That it's different to the real physics of our universe is irrelevant.
>>
>>54610369

Then what is actually different?
>>
It would be sci-fantasy as >>54610408 pointed out.
Space opera is more a conduct of plot.

For all your questions on Dark Heresy (1st and 2nd Editions), Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War.
Not the wargame, not Chapter Master, not Space Hulk. Inquisitor is okay, but not many people know about it.

Not sure between starting Dark Heresy 1e and 2e? Pick 2e.

>Why did FFG lose the 40k RPG License?
Because they were bought by Asmodee and that caused some sort of licensing conflict.

>Will GW make their own 40k RPGs now?
Probably not. But if they do it will likely be worse than you could possibly imagine.

Did a GSC ambush during a down time session. No one was armed. It was basically Metal Gear Solid for a good long while. Ended with the players seizing the armory, staging a defense long enough to get contact with a nearby loyal IG unit, then having artillery called on their position. They were fine, the cultists were either dead or gone, and they managed to attract a little attention from a nearby Inquisition detachment.

Session ended with them in a ship heading up to see an Inquisitor about the experience.

It is human nature to seek culpability in a time of tragedy.

It is a sign of strength to cry out against shitty minis, rather than to bow one's head and succumb.
Inevitably many will fault the brush that painted the forehead, the sculptor.
But the sculptor merely performs the duty of his office. To further fear him is dumb, to hate him, autistic.
Those more sensible will place responsibility with those who gave the sculptor's shitty mini the go-ahead.

With some fortune, they may foster this hatred into purpose, and further rule their own fate by ranting furiously about it on the internet.
Yet ultimately, it was we who set these events into motion, by daring to like a character in a videogame...

/tg I have a bit of a question
Me and my friends have gotten into DnD this past year and long story short, one of my friends is trying to play as a neutral good warlock and wants to heal. As a warlock. Like doubling up on Cleric and Warlock. Yeah I know multiclassing is a thing, but my real question is: does this actually sound any good? It goes totally against the whole fantasy of a warlock and I'm not fond of it, and they don't want to hear any "complaints" from me.

It's a silver bordered card. It isn't.

Unless you mean the concept of mana screw, in which case: Why are you allowed to roll 1s in dnd? Luck. Its part of the game. Arguably one of the worst parts of it, but that is the nature of tabletop games unless you're playing chess.
>>
So that newbies can occasionally beat a more experienced player by chance, which motivates them to keep spending money on the game rather than losing every time and giving up.
Several alternatives to dedicated mana-producing cards, such as letting any card be played as a land, or a steadily rising supply of mana that doesn't come from cards at all, have been tried by several other games, but they all faded away and MTG pisses on their graves.

Hello /tg/, I was looking to run a squad-level fantasy game for a group of people and was wondering if there was a rules-light-ish system that fit. Something with a bit of flexibility and room for customization but not quite at the level of say d20. Preferably hex-based or adaptable to such a map.

I'm asking here because I remember waaaay back there was a game run on this board for aaages where the dude running it like invented the system (I think) and drew and updated these really cool maps to go with every new post. Is there any system like the one he homebrewed or is it pretty much unique?

Not sure what you're talking about, but Strike! sounds like it could suit. Feels weird to suggest it, as I honestly don't like it very much, but it's one of the only rules light-ish tactical combat games I know.

Is Hearthstone a traditional game and/or does /tg/ like it?
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>

No and no,
>>
Digital card games are kind of odd. In terms of format and mechanical style, they're more like traditional games, but they only exist in a digital format.

I think there is some room for discussing digital games on /tg/, with digital card games or purely digital board games like Armello or Gremlins Inc, alongside digital adaptations of traditional games, as we can offer a different perspective of them and discuss them from a different angle than /v/ does.

Hearthstone isn't particularly interesting though. Despite being the most popular digital CCG, it's a rather generic and unimaginative one.
