Instead of being a dick and ruining everything your players have worked for so far, force them into action with an unconventional threat they just can't ignore or straight up murder. People have suddenly started getting sick, the settlement's herbal remedies and magical cures are a temporary solution at best. Perhaps a larger city along the coast has a foreign remedy they could use or maybe someone in the capital could help?

How does it work?

Link monsters have no defense position and go in 1 of 2 shared slots (you each get 1, but you can use either).
You summon them by sacrificing X monsters, where X is the number where their defense would normally be.
They count as Y monsters when sacrificed to summon another link monster, where Y is their own cost.

Link monsters also have arrows on their picture frame, which point to your and your opponents card slots.
Extra deck monsters (synchro, fusion, etc. etc.) can only go in the 2 link slots and in slots pointed at by link monsters.

13th age or 4e for a distinctly different flavor of tolkeinesque fantasy. They're both more-or-less "DnD with most of the sacred cows dead" which makes them really accessible to newbies who've only ever played or even been exposed to 5e or 3.5, while still feeling like a distinct system.

Otherwise, Robin D. Law's dramasystem is a blast if you've got people who are really good at improv and roleplaying. Don't know that I'd necessarilly recommend it as it's very rules light and narrative and I feel like I only have as much fun as I do with it because I play with a bunch of theater majors, but I'd call it a favorite.

Party arrives while momma is out looking for food. finds survivors, plus a nest of large eggs.

I think they made the new rule specifically to get rid of deep strike only armies to make people mix up their tactics a bit
