You are Kittrane, demon soulborn, school badgirl, and right now you're having the time of your life!

This dungeoning thing is starting to get fun: together you and Phoebe just took down some fake city guards and for a moment everything between you was perfect...alas the moment didn't last long enough and reality intruded.

Still, you now have something else fun to do. The struggling Inky wizard Thaddeus is slung over your shoulder. You'll seen have a new, albeit temporary team-mate alongside Phoebe, Cleya and Evrumine.

“Kittrane is this really a good idea?” asks Cleya as you lead them inside an abandoned house and deposit the teenage scribe on a chair. He immediately tries to flee, but you grab him and throw him back on the chair.

“Why wouldn't it be?” you ask, grinning, still high off the glow from the recent fight.

“Well for starters were not competing as a team here” Cleya points out “I'm not sure the recruiting rules are even in force.”

“Thad doesn't mind, do you Thad?” you say, one hand on his shoulder as you lean down over him. He leans away trying to escape, but you have him firmly trapped.

“A few minutes of 'interrogation' and he's officially an ally” you say, looking around for support.

Phoebe chuckles and says “sure, sounds fun, and if its against the rules, someone will tell us, right?”

Evrumine shakes her head “zis is silly” she says.

“We could just interrogate him for their plans?” points out Phoebe.

“Either way” says Cleya “this is wasting time – we have other teams to hunt.”

Thad just stays silent, looking at you all in fear.

I think I'm done roleplaying.

>Play in D&D campaign meeting every week for a year and a half
>Party fights together
>Party grows together
>Dozens of great moments of character building and victories in battle
>Group gears up for the final battle against the final BBEG who's been looking over the campaign for the past eight months
>Party confronts the BBEG's right-hand man and a handful of high level underlings outside his room
>Total party wipe
>Table doesn't know what to do
>GM says "well, I guess that's the game. Let's meet up next week and figure out what we're playing next."
>Packs up and goes home

I'm fucking crushed. We didn't even get to fight the main bad guy. I played with this party for over eighteen months and we had a TPK literally right outside the final boss's chambers.

This happened maybe an hour ago. I'm still in the game store and I feel like I've had all my passion for the hobby sucked out of me.

I don't think I have any real reason to go back next week.

I'm sorry anon, that is terrible, but i don't know if its worth giving up on role-playing entirely for. I mean you played this campaign for a year and half, didn't you enjoy it? did you not derive enjoyment from each session? for me personally it's true i want to see an epic conclusion, but the journey is worth a lot to me too. i love matching wits with the dm and trying to find my way out of his latest death trap, or trying to get myself out of a clusterfuck after a few bad rolls. I love banter with the rest of the party. I love developing my character and watching them change as we progress and the things that we run into change their views. I love sitting on the edge of my seat watching the dice tumble on a critical roll thinking, do i die tonight (no resurrection in the game i play)? I love role-playing for role-playing, and if you stuck it out for a year and a half, i bet you like it too. So yeah, it sucks, your hopes are crushed, but you can get through this. Just remember all the good times and how much you loved coming this far.
>>
did everyone show up? DMs sometimes misjudge the party.

I've only ever watched one TPK, and I was a very new DM and also an inexperienced player and also that session was messed up for extraneous reasons.

It's frustrating, but you're actually there for the group, not the imaginary world. I'd go back -- actually, I'd press for some variant of 'load from save' maybe a different set of tactics would win -- or maybe the DM understands where he over-powerd you and can ratchet it back a notch.

Sometimes you lose. But, as the guy above me says, did you have fun? Most groups I've been in falter and fall apart after a dozen sessions, because people's real life gets in the way. You've had a rare opportunity to experience roleplay in a way few players ever can.

Do what you think is right, but if it were me, I'd go back.

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, the 12th Division's investigator of abnormal occurrences.

You were allowed to take another break after your latest mission. This off-duty time is meant for recuperation. You won't be receiving any further assignments until you've fully recovered.

Before you go home, you buy something that can be had over tea. You've usually brought souvenirs from the Human World before, so suddenly appearing empty-handed might be inappropriate.

When you come back home, your mother meets you and hastily ushers you in, a bright smile on her face. Her smooth black hair flows down the back of her blue, flower-embroidered kimono. It's a more formal outfit than usual.

"Miyu-chan and I decided to take a bit of a walk. We just came back." She explains her uncharacteristically kempt appearance. "Having to dress up and act like a proper lady is really stifling. I haven't had to do that in so long... I just can't go out in these parts in what I usually wear at home, you know?" Shiori finishes her complaints with a sighs. As you enter the living room, you find the white haired, golden eyed Miyu to be sitting at the table wearing a smaller version of Shiori's outfit. Your mother twirls around, still holding your hand, and looks at you with concern. "Are you alright? You look tired. Hard day at work?"

"I'm fine." You say. She puts the back of her hand on your forehead but after finding no fever, she takes it away. Her brown eyes glance at the bag in your hand. She smiles again.

"So what did you bring for us today, Ryouta?"

"Honey cake."

"Great! You know what, let's have it right now. I'll go make some tea. Take a seat, I'll be back shortly." Shiori walks away, leaving you with Miyu. Her golden eyes have been looking your way ever since you've entered the room. It's only after you've finished your conversation with Shiori that she decides to speak up. Her voice, while undeniably that of a young girl's, is as dull and emotionless as always.

"Welcome home, ONII-CHAN..." Just as she always does, Miyu awkwardly emphasizes the end of her sentences.

"Hello, Miyu. Have you been well?" You ask. The girl silently nods. You sit down next to her and unpack the dessert onto the table; Miyu keeps her golden eyes on you throughout the process. "Is something wrong?"

Before answering, the girl takes a moment to ponder over the question. "I'm not sure..." Her vague thought seems to have concluded abruptly, as the forced ending was absent. She speaks up again after another pause. "I'm not sure why you're asking ME."

There is something scrutinizing in those childish eyes of hers. When you don't respond to her, the girl tilts her head, as if she's trying to find the minute detail she's not seeing from another angle.

"Onii-chan..." Miyu begins in her regular monotone. "Have you been WELL? Is something WRONG...?"

There should be a little time to talk about something before your mother returns. Of course, it isn't necessary.

...

>"I'm fine. I'm just tired from my previous mission. It will probably pass."
>"I was hurt on my previous mission. Let's keep it a secret from mother."

You lie awake in the middle of the night. The dark and silent atmosphere of your bed chamber stands in contrast to the loud, chaotic turmoil in your head. With Vanessa gone, and once turned against you, the potential loss of a child, and the death of one of your most powerful underlings, not to mention the assimilation of an entire country into your territory, you have too much running through your mind to rest peacefully. After several hours of pointless stillness and quiet, you grow too tense to remain in bed, and sit up. You pull on your dressing gown and pop on your slippers. With any luck, either the night air
or some light exercise will tire you out enough to get a few hours before sunrise.

So assassins attacked the group, my character tackled one out a window and together landed in a river outside and got washed a ways down, actually outside the city.

He's now separated from the group by a good amount, but has the assassin pretty well subdued. I'm wondering what I should do with her, since I'm not really sure where to find the group and even if I did it would take a good while to meet up with them again. All the while whatever I choose to do, I've got a dangerous enemy as a prisoner for as long as I can hold onto her, no rope but strong enough to keep her from getting away. I get the feeling though that going back into the city will be hard if she wants to just start kicking and screaming or something like that.

So I guess, what would you do in this situation? I've never really been separated from a party to this extent, and never managed to take a prisoner this high-priority. I'm kind of at a loss on how to proceed and figured some insight from other people would be helpful.

Chances are, she probably wants to reunite with her group as well, so I'd personally offer her a temporary ceasefire until you guys are able to find your pals.

Alternatively, try to figure out how much she was going to get paid and try to outbid her boss.
>>
>>46709111
The problem I think is she can't exactly go to the big guy at the top without success, so wants to get away in order to try to kill or capture us again. The other assassins were strangers so it's not as easy as just meeting up with her buddies again. As for compensation she's not really being paid for it, it's an effort to clear out the city of possible dangers to the big guy's hostile takeover, and an effort to be noticed by him in the hopes of being properly employed or something to that end.

Ceasefire idea sounds good but I don't think I can trust her so I can imagine her taking the chance to just run away the first chance she got, or even trying to kill me. Or like trying to cause a scene like I said before, and attract other potential killers or just the negative attention of normal citizenry.
>>
>>46709274
So, what kind of character are you playing exactly? I could honestly see several ways of doing this.

>Remind her that she already tried to kill you once, and point out how badly she failed.
>Point out that BBEG is at minimum on par with your party and could most likely kill her if she returns a failure.
>Point out that most likely, actually trying to finish the job will result in her death.
>Mention that cooperation could potentially net her a chance of survival.
>Mention off hand a village on the other side of kingdom that BBEG is ignoring because it's in the boonies. A good place where she could hide or start new.
>Once she starts internally debating what to do, occasionally drop anicdotes about horrible things BBEG did and good things your group have done.
>Eventually win her over.
>???
>Profit?

Of course, I'm currently playing a Bard, so my like of thinking might be biased.

The first tank (in image) is the regular battle tank. Its smaller and somewhat "weaker" compared to the other two tanks. But this tank is quicker than the other two tanks in this boss fight and to make up for being "weaker" than the two tanks. It's more aggressive, acting as a vanguard and it'll harry and harass teammates to distract them while the other two tanks will take shots at them who're distracted. This tank will also attempt to ram party members who get too close, which can hurt alot.

Second Tank: http://destiny.gamepedia.com/Goliath_Tank

The second tank is a "Heavy Assault" tank, it's got powerful weapons; a main gun which can potentially one-shot-kill, numerous secondary machine guns to any enemy that gets to close. It even has long range attacks such as guided rockets and missiles, which it'll use to forcefully flush anyone out of cover and hiding spots. But, this heavy tank is much slower and less agile. And although it attacks are powerful, its attacks are telegraphed and can be fairly predictable, but again its attacks are high damage and can potentially one-shot-kill anyone who's not careful.

And the third tank: http://karanak.deviantart.com/art/Octopus-331333863

Is a special multi-role hover-tank. This tank has the best of both the other tanks; quick and agile and sophisticated weaponry. This tank is also the smartest it will take advantage of the environment, work alongside the other tanks in taking down a party member. And will make full use of all it's weapons and assets, for example; if a player is hiding behind cover or is in a "Cheesing Spot", it will use its guided missile/rockets weaponry to force that Guy out of that cheesing spot. It will deploy smokescreens to obscure enemy vision, it also has trophy systems to deflect projectiles and would even shoot at stuff you're throwing at it. Basically, this hover-tank is has to be the most difficult to fight.

So how would this boss fight scenario play out?

So will things play out?

If you do the calculations for the energy-on-impact of weapons that can actually damage tanks from the past half a decade, virtually no Wizard spell beyond really high level ones and those that actively ignore physical protection will do much damage unless they strike at more vulnerable areas. If the party doesn't know the tank's weaknesses and the battle begins at range (assuming the vehicle possesses its standard armaments), virtually any party from most settings will be swiftly annihilated, unless we're talking about truly exceptional individuals.

That being said, we're not here for the boring scientific answer, just pointing that out before you continue.
>>
>>46707258
I also would like to add that the range difference between any spell even the most powerful and a MBT gun is too big, modern tanks can snipe moving targets from 5km away without any trouble.
>>
I can already immagine action packed and high-octane scenes where the party of spellcasters fighting those tanks are struggling and panicking how to destroy those tanks and that all the magical attacks they throw at the tanks are seemingly useless and keep on being absorbed or deflected by the tank's armor.

Meanwhile the tank commanders bark orders at the tank crew to "ADVANCE!" or "ENEMY AT NORTHWEST, GUNNER, FIRE MAINGUN!" or "ENEMY IS AT CLOSE DISTANCE! DRIVER, RUN HIM DOWN! RUN HIM DOWN!!!"

Also figured this would fit well as background music for such a scenario

Why didn't the Padishah Emperor rule Dune directly? It's common knowledge that Dune is the most important planet in the universe, and he's secretly worried about the Harkonnens and Atreides overthrowing him. Why give them Dune? Why give them power? Maybe you'll say that the Spacing Guild wouldn't accept him having more power, so okay, why not give Dune to a crappier house less capable of betraying him? Also, why does his daughter look nothing like him?

Play both sides versus each other. The idea was that the Aterides and Harkonnen would expend their resources killing each other , and thus be more easy to control later.

It also moves both of those houses away from their powerbase on their homeworlds.
