Been a while since there was a Kings of War General.

>What is Kings of War?

Kings of War is a fantasy combat game in the style of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Designed to be faster and more streamlined than Warhammer, it's rules allow for most any army that was previously played to be played.

Rules can be found, for free, here:
http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html

>What is Star Shattered City?

Star Shattered City is a homebrew skirmish game ala mordhiem based on the Kings of War chassis. It is designed to be better balanced than mordhiem while still allowing the random madness and heroic advancement that can come of it.

Rules can be found, for free, here:

Not much, honestly. You'll want to either increase the number of dudes in a unit to get roughly the same size OR scale down stuff that's bigger than a normal person to make sure that dragons are not bigger than entire units.

/tg/ I’m working on a campaign setting and I need your help fleshing it out.
I call it Suepunk. Around 20 years ago mary sues, a race of all female superhuman beings from another dimension, started appearing on Earth. While they’re very competent in almost every conceivable walk of life, and always eager to display their incredible skill and powers, the sues seem to be completely incapable of progressing the plot of their own life. Because of this they will latch on to what they call “protagonists” and serve under them, applying their powers to any obstacles in that person’s life instead of their own. A “protagonist” is usually one of the first people the sue encounters after spawning on Earth. Powerful or charismatic people are more likely to imprint on a sue, but sometimes it’s entirely random. Because of this, and because of the sheer power of their combat abilities, people all over the world have clambered to obtain as many of the creatures as they can. A kind of mary sue arms race. Crime bosses, corperate CEOs, even the world’s governments have scrambled to imprint on as many sues as they can, as even one can overpower a small army equipped with conventional weapons. In this new age, those who control the mary sues control the world.
The players are all members of a new hybrid race. Those with the mental independence of a human, but the power of a mary sue. They are the offspring of a human father and a mary sue mother, which you’re inevitably going to get when you throw a race of beautiful subservient female humanoids into the world. The services of Half-sues are even more sought after than those of mary sues, because Half-sues are the only thing that can match the power of a mary sue, but unlike full sues, they can be bought.

So anything you'd add? Ideas for over-arching plots? Problems I might run into? Suggestions for a good system to run it in?
I'll post a few examples of some of the sues in the world.

Age also seems to be entirely cosmetic.

Are there any settings/novels where humanity is extinct and the other fantasy races are prominent? Maybe not even extinct, but in such decline and scattered that the 'common' races of the world will likely never encounter a human, and build folklore from the brother's friend's cousin's broodling encounter.

>humanity, once sprawling the entire world, is now gone, leaving only their ruined structures
>the feral races, in the absence of humans, have begun to advance and rediscover human technology
>they interrogate what could have happened to the long extinct humans the elders describe as mammoth, brilliant, fast, and horrible

No furry shit. Just 'humans fucked up/lost', and gnolls/trolls/undeath/psychic snails/etc are now inhabiting all former human cities.

Dunno about fantasy settings, but Fragged Empire is one. Humanity went extinct due to genetic erosion. You play as one of four artificially created races, developed either by the Archons (humanity's heirs) or the monstrous X'ion (itself a creation of the Archons).

But actual fantasy settings? I can't for the life of me think of one. Humans seem to be so critical to fantasy settings that omitting them seems like one of the higher heresies. Which sucks because I'd be interested in seeing something like that.

-Starting PC's: [150/-50] human

I'm Looking to start up a new weekly regular game. Hit me up if you guys want in on a grand adventure through the Gates
Contact me ASAP so we can hash out the nitty-gritty details of who you are and what you're doing in the game. The party will be a scout team sent out from Novum Londonium, the new colony on the far side of the first gate reached!
Ideally, you'll be heroes of the British empire, gallivanting about the stars in the Stargate universe. Your call, but we'll make you a sheet somehow.

The Royal Academy of Otherworldly Sciences was established by the joint effort of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria and her counterpart Christian IX of Denmark. The Academy has been recruiting aggressively among the great minds of Europe for some time, and has become a name spoken in hushed corners of dark venues. If, after all, The Academy asks you to join their ranks, you are destined for great works somewhere exotic in the far reaches of the known world. You are whisked away to a career of adventure!
Little do the common masses realize, these forays are quite otherworldly, entirely.

Those a part of the Royal Expeditionary Forces often were put into the force as...expendable. Those with a track record of reckless abandon, yet RESULTS. Those who couldn't be trusted domestically with trusted assets, yet had undeniably skills to put to use. Those were the ones put into the ranks. Sikhs. Irishmen. Americans.
Nova Londonium (pictured here); The new capital of the new empire is a bastion of beauty on a nearly perfectly earth-like world. The scientists and scholars have been poring over it's every inch for nearly a decade, and still, barely the surface of it has been scratched. Now, with full support of the Queen herself, the colonization of the new frontier will commence!

You have been gathered from your various origins, sent on an Antarctic voyage to a blasted ice shelf, ushered into high security secret facilities, and then loaded upon a train car (which you surmised would go nowhere on this little island). Moments later, a WHOOSH and a swirl of light, and the train is blasting forward through a shimmering silvery portal!

You find yourselves seconds later being offloaded in the new port of Londonium. Massive marble buildings dominating the skyline of an alien city! Verdant jungle of wild abandon in the distance, and the train pulling free of a massive Stargate behind you!

The promise of service to your Queen and Country behind you, the grand expanse of an alien world all around you. Your future, uncertain.

So the question each of you need to answer is simple; why would YOU have been recruited for this grand adventure? What history would put you in the grand fate such as this?

Why, You?

The colony is based on some sort of alien abandoned city; massive monolithic buildings of clean white marble. Interlocked stone streets. Fountains pouring crystal waters. And all of it hedged in on a low mountaintop, with nothing in all directions but a vast green jungle towering away.

Her Majesty's military forces are dispatched here in earnest; red uniforms abound. Among them, the officers of the Royal academies are ever present. Scientists of all fields arrive here with devices arcane and sophisticated, seeking to unlock the mysteries of the Stargate, and the new colony.

Apparently, this land has been claimed by The Queen for some time; the forces here have for some years been reclaiming the city around you, block by block, from the jungle and it's inhabitants. Fierce beasts of alien form, massive in scale and ferocious, with no fear of man. The Royal Armory has been put to good use, and many trophies now line the dormitories around you. But the work is constant, the fight tiresome, and the need for security paramount.

Combine your two most favorite settings into one and see if it makes sense.
If you can, come up with an idea for a campaign based on it.

>Medieval Post-Apocalypse.
Set in a version of our world where the black death never stopped its relentless march across the land and far more volatile than its real-world counterpart, most of earth's population was decimated as the sickness spread into the middle east and Africa via Spain and into south-east asia via China.

What little remained of the populations across central Europe chose to stay in smaller, tightly-knit enclaves fiercely opposed to outsiders and ever in fear of new outbreaks, rather than repopulate the larger cities that had been the epicenters of the plague. Cities overflowing with the bodies of the diseased and falling apart from years of disrepair, making all but the most remote towns into gigantic mausoleums. Those that do not live within the safety of settlements roam the land as robbers, raiders, cannibals and religious cultists determined to purge what remains of humanity to absolve humanity of sin.

The campaign begins in a tiny, fortified township near the once Polish-German border, where the players are going about their day to day work. When a mysterious monk knocks on the gates and manages to talk his way inside, he tells all that will listen about a rumor originating from the east. The rumor of a cure that can permanently put an end to the plague. Having received a vision from god, the monk aims to travel eastwards and discover this cure, and he needs help from anyone who wants to partake in his holy mission.

So honestly I'm not too hyped for aether revolt. We all basically know how things will play out and I doubt there's anything that will really surprise us like kaladesh did with vehicles and energy. More of these things are good but not that exciting.

I just can't make a cool fantasy villain without drawing inspiration from Tolkien. My villains aren't bad, but they feel samey and boring to me. Any advice?
43 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>50202311

Well, the obvious answer is to include a character trait that is wholly incompatible with Sauron's personality and archetype.

Even if you drift into old habits, you'll have to put in the work to reconcile the incompatible bits.

More general advice:
1) Start with one trait/belief you find morally agreeable and one trait/belief morally reprehensible. Design the person who has both. (This is good for characters in general, really.)
2) Villains don't exist in a vacuum. A villain that is phenomenal in one story can fall completely flat in another; make sure you're incorporating the heroes and the context of the world into the villain to make them really sing.
3) Try imagining your villain with as small of stakes as possible. When they go for the world, lots of villains start to sound the same, because "the world" is such a huge, all-encompassing target. But if your villain is, like, level 3, who and what he chooses to go after says a lot more about him.
>>
>>50202311
Have your players complained?
Maybe you should start by considering a different motivation for your villain from conquest and seeking power over others. Why you do something affects how you do it, and what sort of person you are.
>Revenge
This is a classic one. Revenge is not concerned with getting anything, like greed is, or fixing anything, like justice is. It's about taking something away from someone else, usually because it or something like it was stolen from whoever is taking revenge. Usually, collateral damage, loss of allies or even death are considered acceptable costs in exchange for vengeance. They usually lack subtlety and may even actively explain who they are and what they're doing, to justify themselves to others and themselves.
This is a woman who dragged herself out of the gutters and lashes out in hatred towards nobility. Comparing this person to the target of their hatred will likely either provoke their reflection or fury.
>Family/Love
Probably one of the most relatable forms of motivation. This is the person who's willing to sacrifice anything, up to and including their morals and body, to protect another person or cause them to prosper. Usually, they tend to work in secret, hiding their works from the person who benefits from them- more often than not because the target wouldn't approve of the methods. They will likely have well-structured plans, but panic if the subject of their affection or protection is targeted. Paranoia is likely for a villain of this type, and they will almost certainly be a good actor so to hide their true colors.
This is the prince of a kingdom who connives and kills in secret to ensure the safety of his father the good king and the other members of the royal family. He will likely be charming or even hold feelings toward a member of the party, but any threat to his father or siblings will be noted with silent hatred.
>>
>>50202624
>Survival
This is rarely justified for a powerful villain (save for immortality seekers), but can be useful for an enemy of smaller scale. This person needs something to live, from blood to water, and does not care how they get it- it is literally, or nearly so, a matter of life and death, and for them, death is not an option. As they are concerned with protecting their own life, damn the morals, they are more likely to 'fight dirty' or exploit those who they can easily crush. Ironically, despite often using fear to accomplish their goals (which saves them time, effort, and a risk of death, however small), they are generally 'cowardly' themselves, willing to let an enemy have a small victory or pay him off in order to ensure he doesn't interfere with their supply of continued life.
The spice must flow.
>Curiosity
This is actually fairly rare, because the stereotypical person that falls under this (mad scientists) are also typecast as subservant to more generic enemies. This person does amoral experimentation to feed their twisted understanding of the world. They usually ind funding from someone who is either willing to tolerate or benefits from their 'research', their 'research' 'funds' itself, or they need to do additional work to provide for their experimentation. These are eccentric people who see potential where it is not, or are otherwise obsessed with the answer to some obscure or cruel question.
This is the guy who places people in deathtraps to see how long it takes them to die.
