Everyone on /sci/ likes to recommend proto-analysis books like Spivak and Apostol as beginner texts, or Stewart for brainlets. On rare occassions, Simmons gets a mention.

Why no love for Larson or Larson/Edwards? Where does his book rank in terms of rigor, clarity, exercises, etc.?

I think it's pretty much the same as Stewart. A middle ground b/w spivak/apostol and stewart is Thomas Calculus I think
>>

This OP, almost exactly Stewart. No rigor, just basic explanations and examples, followed by problems and (((online homework)))

enjoy your 1200€/m for a shitty 25m^2 apartment in the ghetto

If you even find an apartment

Stay away from it. Rent in munich is a total ripoff! You also have to commute all the time to garching if you are doing STEM. Even teaching sucks, because you have to do tutorials with 200 other students. There a lectures with over 500 students in it. If you are doing BA go for a smaller University! You can always switch for yours MA.

Sometimes people you wouldn't suspect are scientists.

Here's a bodybuilder who at first glance looks like a douchebag meathead, but he is also a PhD physicist. People like Rich Piana fascinate me. They have the best of both worlds.

Damn, I know that feel. I have a okayish interaction with a girl and afterwards I feel like crying from the emotional overload.

Or is brilliant at duping potential investors.

still too early to tell, but with that body language, i'd say he's a huckster.

No. He didn't even try to make it seem believable. If the judges had even paid attention in high school chemistry they'd know that turning water into tons of gold bricks through purely mechanical means would be impossible.

How important is undergraduate research compared to grades?

I fluctuate around a 3.0 GPA (got lazy in my first two years), but I've been the sole author of two papers in molecular biology, one on mathematics and a co-author in another paper on genomics (I was lucky enough to get into a lab because I'm one of the few biotech majors in the Dept. of Bio. at my university)

How would grad programs see a mediocre GPA paired with healthy undergrad research credentials?

Grad schools typically judge you based on your last 60 hours, so you messing around your first two years shouldn't hurt that much, beware of early pruning though, some departments may have a hard cutoff at say 3.5 for you general gpa and then evaluate your last 60 hours and research. Letters of rec are also very important, I should also mention that published research is only as good as the quality of the work, did you publish your work in reputable journals?
>>
How are you the sole author in 2 two papers if you co authored a paper?
>>
>>8976458
Not just some, but most departments have a 3.5 cutoff. You can get past it by knowing someone, of course, but good luck sending out anonymous grad applications.

I'm currently helping a professor research something in Linear Algebra involving multiplying a bunch of matrices together and seeing how order influences the LU decomposition of the product, however, there are lots of different ways to multiply these matrices together, and there are only a few good orderings, IE, ones that produce purely polynomial entries in the L and U parts.

I want to be able to have a program create these matrices and try all of these orderings and have them determine if the ordering is good or not. The way I can check if the ordering is good or not is if the entry contains a "/", is there any way for me to write a java program or in some other language that allows me to put variables in a matrix, I want to be able to have the program look through the entries and tell me an ordering is bad if say, it looks like this: (abc)/(1+ab), but good if it looked like: a^2(bc+da)+3abcd

Can anyone help?

So, has relativity been reconciled with QM yet?
>>
>>8976106
Actually the machinations by which it renews itself will yield different energy patterns whenever a big bang in this universe occurs...

>>8976106
Not to mention possible quantum drainage...

So yes it does repeat but different start erytiem...

So, next year I will be attending university and studying at said university's College of Engineering.

As part of my admission as a first year engineering student, I must read, before the start of the fall semester, a novel that each year the school picks as a "common read" for its freshman class.

The novel for my class is : "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks".

Now if you are interested in seeing what the book is about, read the Wiki entry on it, and if you want to read it yourself order it on Amazon, but the reason I made this thread is this :

> How and why is this book appropriate for a freshman first-year engineering student.

When I first looked into the book, I thought to myself, "Okay, it's going to be an anecdotal education on ethics in relation to science, in the context of medicine."

However, when I started reading the book, it felt more like a biography with injections of medical jargon and a subtle political argument on race and class.

To me, this is a book that feels more appropriate to a history college or medical college than an engineering college, and the sense of racial and class commentary that is seemingly ingrained in all of the prose of the pages brings a suggestively political atmosphere that I will not have in any engineering clique.

From there, I ask any Anons who have read this book :

> What did you think about it?
> Do you think it's appropriate for an engineering class?
> Any thoughts on the story or persons involved?
