I have a question, /sci/.

It involves some basic mathematics.

I am dumb, and hours of googling and reading ebooks on the subject has turned up nothing.

This involves telescopic sums, where you determine the sum of a (pre)recursive function by using a term that has not yet been evaluated.

If your lower limit is 0, and your upper limit is 10, and the function of the sum is (a.(n+1)*3) with n+1 meaning the next term

what is the solution to the sum?

Look for a polynomial [math]P[/math] such that [math]P \left( X \,+\, 1 \right) \,-\, P\left( X \right) \,=\, a\, \left(n \,+\, 1 \right)^3[/math] (hint: it will be of degree 4) and then you can turn it into a telescopic sum.

Meant [math]a\, \left(n \,+\, 1\right)^3[/math].

The time dilation of the drug DMT is impossible to comprehend, how can less than an hour possibly feel like days and even weeks? Nothing comes close and it feels like you could completely and exponentially increase your life-span of experiences whilst on it. Is it infact that you do enter another realm where time exists differently? Thoughts?

While shooting the shit with a friend I once suggested that heaven/the afterlife is actually your body megadosing itself on DMT so hard that it essentially stops one's perception of time, to the point that whatever hallucination you have appears to go on for eternity.

>Is it infact that you do enter another realm where time exists differently?

oh yeah, buddy.

you ever.... uhm... dream?
>>
>>8977284
>enter another realm where time exists differently?

Nah, it's just your perception of time that exists differently.

DMT is actually manufactured by your pineal gland, which is why fluoride is in your water... to prevent you from dreaming.

Biochem fag here, but I've been interested in materials science for a while. Finding recommendations for texts on /sci/ for things like math and physics is pretty easy, but in my experience people rarely talk about matsci.

What are your guys' experience with matsci and p-chem? Know of any particularly good sources to learn more/textbooks that provide good explanation for someone with physics and chemistry knowledge?

What are you looking for exactly? I'm a Chem student and I've been learning about polymers and metals/corrosion lately, nothing too deep though obviously
>>
>>8977289
I'm just fascinated in what factors are used in determining what materials to use when building/manufacturing, as well as the actual production of materials themselves.

Alloys specifically are mysterious to me, because it seems difficult for me to tell from a glance what mixture of metal would produce the type of strength/flexibility that would be required for a certain use. I know there are various tables that can be used with values of how brittle a material is, how much force it can withstand, etc. but I'm more interested in why that's the case.
>>
Materials Science is a very, very broad field. For starters, you can look into crystallography and defects - that alone covers a lot of ground regarding alloys and their characteristics. If you're more interested in optics and electrical applications, you can delve into solid state physics. Then there's polymers, too, and composites...

I wouldn't recommend any specific book, because none covers all aspects well enough. Browse some university homepages - many of them have lots of teaching materials open to the public.

>does anyone else become extremely frustrated if he cant understand things visually and analytically ?

I'll let you know when it happens, OP.
>>
>>8977266
Yes. it's annoying because I can't go on studying unless I understand it both ways. It costs me a lot of time.
>>
No, I don't feel bad about visual issues, at least. I'm an Ashkenazi Jew, and while we have the highest average IQs (110-113) and make Whites and Asians look like chimps, we are mediocre when it comes visual-spatial understanding. That doesn't stop us from producing the greatest mathematicians and scientists that have ever lived.

If anything, visual aptitude an inherently brainlet trait. You might actually be smart, OP.

Alright /sci/olists (don't get triggered, I've been trying to find a word that begins with sci), I need your expertise.

Currently I'm studying physics (Unis here work... differently, just roll with it) and I'm "attending" some classes that bleed into one another, then get abandoned, and generally my curiculum is a mess.

Shit, we had a 1000pg Chem for the 1st semester, but in the 2nd Chem got throw out. We some weird Math whose title I can't write in English (think infinite dimensions & vectors, but obviously more advanced), that appear in one semester, then get thrown away, and the cycle continues. Same with programming.

Anyway, as you can see, my Uni here sucks, since nobody really "learns" anything. Everybody just struggles to get through the 500pg required reading of each subject in those 2 months we have, and that's it.

My general question here is that if I want to get into a sort of engineering/physics "merge" during my post-grad what do I need to study? I want to get into the arms industry and then move towards artificial limbs and robotics as soon as I've got enough funding.

Do I need to research programming on my own? Maybe something bussiness related? I don't really care about my "GPA", because a 10 and a 6 are of the same importance to the US (I mean, shit, I'll have to go against Harvard & MIT graduates, the number I have my diploma from my literally-who Uni doesn't mean shit).

Also, any tricks to study more? I'm a lazy fucking slob and I've started slipping (I did well in the first semester, but in the second one I'm likely going to flunk half the subjects).

PS: Pic Related 'cause ever since I was a wee lad I wanted to be Iron Man. And before you jump on me, MY Tony Stark is before RDJ destroyed his character. I'm not a r/eddit-pleb...

When I was in 6th grade my teacher recommended me to a lady who administers tests because I wasn't doing well in school and I was given what I now believe to be an IQ test which I scored in the 110's on. I cant really remember the test itself but the certificate was broken into two sections: english and maths. I scored significantly higher on the english (or writing skills) than I did on the maths and looking back on it I'm not convinced that I tried my hardest on the maths section which I wouldnt have been interested in. In school I was exceptional at english and writing, which I really enjoyed, and then later on in music. I try to stay away from maths because it's not something I'm interested in at all but when it comes to art and especially music I pick up on things very easily, like learning instruments/ techniques etc.

I've taken IQ tests since then on the internet and stuff and I scored 135 in one which I found hard to believe cos it was only like 30 questions. Is it possible that my IQ is higher than 110 or does music and stuff not correlate to IQ... in which case is IQ flawed? Im in my 20s at the moment and I'm about to tour europe with my band so I'm doing very well but the thought that I could be dumb is kind of depressing. Taking an actual IQ test is off the table, I just want to know what you guys' opinion is of IQ in general. Could I be dumb and still excel in music or does it matter?

>IQ
>>
>>8977151
Let's say you take an IQ test tomorrow. In one scenario you score 91. In another scenario you score 140.

What changes in regards to what you have or will achieve? You said you're doing well in music already, so finding out you have a low IQ is gonna change that how, exactly? It's not like you'll get any dumber or smarter the very moment you find what your IQ is. Your intelligence will remain exactly the same, so what's the point?
>>
>>8977151
IQ is a useless concept. Just look at mensa: the only group who gives a shit about quantifying and bragging about intelligence, they have yet to do anything of note as an organization.

The invention of science, as a career in and of itself, has seriously hampered genuine knowledge seeking. Now, you need a degree from the established "official" researchers to be taken seriously on anything. You also need a gazillion permits and jump through a hundred times as many government regulations to study anything. Meanwhile, the supposed "experts" are encouraged to constantly pop out garbage non-discoveries, because they are entirely dependent on suckling the governmental teat, because REAL research is now too expensive, controversial, or threatening to the existing power structure to get funding and approval.

Discuss.

Find like minded autists like yourself and work on that new paradigm of science.

Fund your ideas publishing them on the internet and crowdfunding, pitch it to rich ppl, fundations, etc

If you're really right the status quo will fall by itself as your science would have better results, if they dont kys

Read Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach and stop being a brainlet.
>>
>>8976987
That doesn't cover any of the interesting implications of creating a superintelligent machine though (which is the focus of my second question)
>>
>>8976977

I'm reading it right now. Only on like Chapter 4 though. I'm kind of doubting if a human-like AI will be possible. I think it will be extremely likely that if we create an AI it will not be human-like, it will have exceptional ability to interpret language, create meaning, do arithmetic, make extensive logical deductions, identify objects etc. (essentially a conglomeration of domain-specific AI's which we have right now) but it will not feel or have qualia, kind of like a Chalmer's zombie.

Another question then being if an AI does not have an existential feeling or consciousness what motivation would it have to make scientific or mathematical discoveries, if we control its will, is it then conscious or does it even have a free will?

I'm no expert in the field but I really see AI as just being an autonomous machine learning system rather than a super-intelligent being. To me there seems to be something missing even if you emulate the entire brain in software.

Given an entire brain emulation (this would likely give us a human-like AI) with higher frequency activity and lower signal travel time and denser connections we would likely have a super-AI. But I don't see how if I speak into a microphone and activate a specific neural network in the emulation used for speech recognition why it would respond. It's literally like saying my brain becomes activated via stimulus and that activation pre-determines my response and there is no ME which controls this response, no will of my own essentially. If that is the case, which it may well be and that is a very scary case indeed, then I can see a super-AI possibly working. The conclusion then would be that we are just unconscious machines ourselves with organic matter rather than digital circuits.

Who's the smartest person you know?

Have you ever met any actual geniuses?

I've met one and he used to be a good buddy at school. There wasn't a single exam where he got less than top marks, which is saying something when all he used to do was sleep in class and he was Chinese taking French and English literature as 2 of his subjects.

He also won or got second place in international maths competitions and did IB Higher Maths at 15 years old. What I noticed was that his ability to just soak up information was second to none and he just 'got' things easily. Though I don't think he delved into the philosophical side of things too much.

Currently I think he's now a professor in some top notch university in the States. MIT or UPenn or something.

It corresponds to a rarity of 1/261 or slightly more almost being in the top 1/3 of 1%
