Why am I so stupid? I'm taking Intro to Computer Science and Calculus I this summer and I'm losing it. I'm about to give up.

How do you do it /sci/? I want to succeed.

>>
lmao just study more
or stop being so stupid

actually get friends and get a sutdy group going
that might work
>>
just breathe, relax, write a list of everything that you don't understand and slowly make your way down the list
>>
you should know that in Uni everyone feels stupid, it's just about hardwork, you have to double your efforts

I want to learn things at a Macroscopic level. I don't care about atoms, or cells, or black holes, or anything I can't see with the human eye. I don't care about the sun's size, its distance, its power, or whether or not it revolves around the Earth; I just need to know that it rises in the east and sets in the west.

This applies for animals, chemicals, technology, etc.

What're some things that deal with this? Not understanding /why/ things do what they do, but just /what/ things do.

there is no why. all you mentioned is the what, the nitty gritty details of how things work.

what you want is some shitty simplified popsci that makes you feel good about yourself and requires no effort. just read whatever popsci book is on fashion nowadays I guess
>>
>>9020779
I'm not asking for a book on explanations, I'm asking for a book on observations.

Instead of having a book that tells me that lightning is made up of tiny particles that can't be seen with the human eye, where can I find a book that just tells me what the bright flashing light in the sky is called, what happens if it strikes glass, you, or a nearby tree, how to attract it, and how to avoid it?

Take your favourite subject and look for journals/textbooks with the word "Applied" in the title.

I'd suggest you make an exception for the theory of statistics, so you don't end up drawing unwarranted conclusions from the stuff you read.

Your master's thesis is really just an exposition on some reasonably advanced topic, if anything it's useful practice for writing papers and eventually your doctoral thesis itself.

Are we too old to end competing with genetically engineered children?

Please tell me we are too old!

I'm 25. I don't want to be a middle aged man and suddenly become surrounded by 290 IQ, 7'5 millionaire Chinese kids.

And fuck everyone who thinks that genetic engineering sounds like a fun future. It's going to be fucking ridiculously dystopian. Literally two species of humans. Literally a subhuman race compromising most of humanity.

On other hand, youre the first humans to experience genetic engineering. If you are the first people to achieve biological immortality, thats a huge legup

>and suddenly become surrounded by 290 IQ
I would argue that the optimal is not the same as the highest IQ. Let's say between 130 and 160.
>And fuck everyone who thinks that genetic engineering sounds like a fun future.
I don't think that, I do think that genetic engineering will be much more difficult as people imagine it is

My mother believes in quantum healing so how do I use science to make her realize that QH is a pseudoscience?
34 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>9018697
If she believes that garbage then she wont consider science to be more valid at explaining things. She's hopeless, just get a new one.
>>
Did you ask her why she believes that shit?
>>
>>9018697
What is it that make it pseudo-science?

According to quantum mechanics, there is a non-zero probability that you at this very moment could tunnel out into space and find yourself on the surface of Mars. So why not healing?

Why is pattern analysis not given more weight in science? It seems more important than every other subject yet most subjects obfuscate it.

"Mirroring"/"Folding" is a more basic operation than even addition yet is never formally taught except with Absolute values.

Something tells me the foundation of human knowledge and thought is placed on weak ground instead of in it's proper place. It's the equivalent of planting trees on top of cement instead of fertile ground. Does anyone else ever think about this sort of thing or have any thoughts?

I feel like switching to the analysis of patterns, especially folding/abs/symmetry creating operations is more fundamental than addition/subtraction. It's almost like a massive amount of progress is hidden by people not even being able to clearly express things in the right language.

I guess perhaps there is some advanced niche field of mathematics that covers this but that seems a fault all in it's own. Especially when such huge ranges of problems involve such patterns and symmetry lines..

For example: Many algorithms involve massive nested symmetric shapes of numbers (bad language but it's self explored). Yet, if you read a textbook on algorithms they don't even mention shape and instead go off into awful math proofs. I suppose that the majority of people even thinking about most algorithms are using awful fucking shit language and abstract representations which hamstring their ability to understand it.

Reminds me of the patterns of prime numbers as something that could be investigated with better recognition tools. I say go for it, you may very well develop a new branch of math. Can you imagine if pattern theory leads to effortless factorization of large numbers? You could revolutionize a lot of fields. I don't see how would anyone even get started though.
>>
I also remember graph theory and topology being used to analyze symmetry and patterns in data, I watched a presentation a few months ago. You may want to look into topological data analysis.
>>
>>9018663
sounds like you don't know shit about math, the whole thing literally pattern analysis.
geometric symmetries are investigated by group actions on varieties, for example. intrinsic topological and geometrical properties by combining local and global objects laced with algebraic structures all around: ringed spaces, tangent bundles, homology / homotopy groups... none of this is niche, it's the heart of math
of course you'll never know this, again you don't know shit about math to know that the language math uses is excellent and as simple as can be

But he's working on Navier-Stokes.
He has worked as well on Goldbach proving that:
>Terence Tao proved that all odd numbers are at most the sum of five primes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldbach%27s_conjecture
>>
Mathematics is reaching its limits, and the stress is showing in mathematicians around the planet. We should count Tao a success in that he's found bliss in working on extremely difficult problems with only incremental gains instead of becoming the next Unabomber out of sheer cynicism, jealousy, or rage.

Hi, /sci/! scientific layperson here, with a question about magnetic pole reversal:

When the magnetic poles reverse themselves on Earth, which of these two images will be the correct map?

Also, how disruptive an event do you think this would be? Based on reading this article from Nasa, it would seem that it's not going to be some kind of apocalyptic disaster, but a gradual transition. What do you guys think?

west and east are where the sun sets and rises, so unless earth starts spinning in an opposite direction those 2 are gonna be the same as they are now.
so A.
>>
>>9022425
I see, so even though north and south are now pointing in opposite directions, the sun would still rise in the east and set in the west?
>>
>>9022341
also, it's no biggie. Things at Earth's surface are basically unaffected, unless it's a sensitive instrument, like a compass. The protective field will flip, but not decrease.

I'm working on problem where each node can have a maximum of:
- 2 bidirectional edges
- 1 directed edge pointing away
- Infinite directed edges pointing towards it
If a node is being pointed at(by a bidirectional or directed edge) by 1+ remaining nodes, then it can be removed. [see pic]
I'm looking for an algorithm, formula or an approach to reduce a graph of any size in the most optimal way, meaning there is the fewest possible nodes remaining.
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>9021911
please clarify when you can remove a node and which nodes can be removed in the example
>>
My current approach is to do something like this:
for each node:
....if node.alive && node.has_live_parents && !node.is_dependant_on:
........node.kill()

- has_live_parents is true if a node has 1+ alive nodes pointing towards it
- is_dependant_on is true if 1+ of the nodes children only have this node as their only alive parent

This problem with this is that if node E is processed before the rest then it's removed then A,B,C or A,B,D are required making the size of the graph 3.
>>
>>9021916
A node can be remove if 1 or more nodes that are still alive are pointing to it.
In the example, the 3 red nodes(B,C,D) are removed
