Hi, /sci/! scientific layperson here, with a question about magnetic pole reversal:
When the magnetic poles reverse themselves on Earth, which of these two images will be the correct map?
Also, how disruptive an event do you think this would be? Based on reading this article from Nasa, it would seem that it's not going to be some kind of apocalyptic disaster, but a gradual transition. What do you guys think?

west and east are where the sun sets and rises, so unless earth starts spinning in an opposite direction those 2 are gonna be the same as they are now.
so A.

I see, so even though north and south are now pointing in opposite directions, the sun would still rise in the east and set in the west?

also, it's no biggie. Things at Earth's surface are basically unaffected, unless it's a sensitive instrument, like a compass. The protective field will flip, but not decrease.

yes, Aussies will still see sunrise before Europeans do

>The protective field will flip, but not decrease.
But does it have the potential to disrupt human society, or would it be more like y2k where we just dealt with it as it happened and life went on?

This.
This will involve repainting compass needles and not much else.
Magnetic north and true north already disagree a little. They'll just disagree a lot.
North will remain north. We named the magnets after the map. We're mot gonna rename the map because the magnet changes its mind.

But would it still make sense to call it "true north" if it becomes closer to the magnetic south of the planet?
>>9022704
Pretty much this, nobody is going to bother redoing every fucking map in existence for a semantic difference

Seems to me like It'd be a potential for map-printing companies to make a lot of money selling new maps, assuming they had the right marketing blitz.
>"Come buy your scientifically accurate map right here!"
Or I guess we could just get used to calling south north and vice versa. Seems like there's the potential for confusion.
