How is the academy in your country /his/, at least on your general field? How do most earn their living?

Chile: 20,000 scientists (Physics, Bio, Chem, Math). Most of us live on government funds and donations. Some CHADS have donations by international organizations

What is the most significant (to earth) astronomical event we can expect to observe during our lifetimes?

Supernova? Geomagnetic storm? Bright comet? Asteroid impact? McDonalds turning the moon into an advert?

Define "significant."

Also, are you talking naked-eye observe, or do telescopic observations count?

I'd say the Shumaker Levy 9 impact into Jupiter might count -- it gave us fair warning, though people seem to have by and large decided to ignore it.

I've been reading Heij and Verbeek's book, but I still don't know how to know to calculate if an equation has a unit root or not. I understand ing most of the concepts behind time series theory isn't hard, but the math behind it isn't so trivil. Any tips? I Also do not understand the algebric step to step Heij goes through in pic related. Sorry if I posted in the wrong board

Ask a question that:
1) you believe /sci/ can't find the answer to on Google,
2) is extraneous to your unique/ personal knowledge (e.g. "what is my dog's name, what color is my hair, where do I live, etc."), and...
3) you know the answer to.

Any anon who replies with a correct answer, a winrar is you. Likewise, you win if /sci/ cannot correctly answer your posted question. It should go without saying that posting wrong answers and dumb questions make you a loser.

Good luck!

At an electron-positron collider, the Higgs boson can be produced via vector boson fusion.

Why has the fusion of two W bosons an higher cross section than the fusion of two Z bosons?

This is my last year as an electronics engineering student and I'm scared of what sort of people I will find when I get a job. I know I'm far from being a genius, but I have had some tough times dealing with too much people who seem to really don't know what they are doing.

How do you cope with that, /sci/ anons?

It's why I shifted majors
From Mechanical Engineering to Electronic & Computer Engineering.
Because:
working with violent, rude & /fit/ muscular welders & mechanics in a hazardous work environment is very dangerous.
Working with /g/ nerdy autistic compsci code monkeys & electronic technicians in a much safer work environment is much easier.

Yes I have had to deal with a lot of incompetent people and a lot of people who are very competent at acting incompetent. Scientology teaches you how to be an expert liar and certainly I have dealt with a lot of dullards telling lies to make themselves look completely retarded. Luckily I think there are a lot competent people on my side but I haven't dealt with many of them directly I don't think.

I would like to learn more about astronomy because I've been nightwalking for almost a year now, becoming familiar with the night sky between all hours of the night. I think my appreciation will become greater if I had a deeper understanding and knowledge of what I am looking at.

Unfortunately, I am unable to take time to take any astronomy classes because they would divert my attention away from my major. What would be a good way to ask a professor at my college to allow me to sit in on their lectures? I-I just want to learn about space.

>>
What you can see will almost all be local stars, you don't need to know much astronomy to understand them. You might see the moon too but if you understand what rocks are you understand the moon already.
Astronomy lectures would be cosmology and technical stellar/galactic evolution material, not learning the names of the constellations or anything much relevant to stargazing.
If it's a large class just go in and sit down, no one will notice or care that you're there. If it's small say "Hi I'm not enrolled but would like to sit in", they'll probably be fine with it as long as you don't make a nuisance of yourself.

Hey mates, I'm considering buying a boxer brief that is around 86% polyester, should I be worried about endocrine disruption in any way?

E.g

"In June 2016, we provided a comprehensive update on Patagonia’s work to investigate the emerging issue of ocean pollution from tiny fibers, which often originate from synthetic textiles (such as nylon, acrylic or polyester) that are used in products available to consumers around the world.

Research about microplastics pollution is just starting to emerge among scientists and our industry, but the shedding of microfibers from synthetic garments is a real concern."

The first thing you have to learn : Learn to use the internet. The internet is an infinite library accessible 24/24 7/7. Learn to know how to search.

You dream of Star Trek. Good. You need to have a radious goal. You need to stay positive and benevolent.

Do not forget, you have time.

PHD exam (applied math) in 1 week, 5 subjects each 3.5 hours.

Based on empirical evidence, I came up with a model that uses neuronal firing patterns to model psychological stress. Basically, after an intense short period of stressing (neuron firing) the stress function enters a refractory period in which additional stimulus (more stress) would not trigger any further response.

I'll keep /sci/ posted if I made it.

I've entered into the XPrize competition, which is where a bunch of rich, famous people and futurists allow groups, mostly brands, to pitch innovative ideas in order to win funding money.

I'm writing a short story for one of their smaller contests, where you're sent 20 years into the future, and have to describe what the world looks like. It needs to be optimistic, and use specific examples.

What kind of technological advancements do you think we'd see in 20 years based on current trends?

Because it's a time travel story, I want to use quantum computing as something that's being realized, and the next step being temporal computing, which includes time as a state, and use that to circle back to the time travel idea. Is that too far from grounded scifi?

20 years into the future?
>The very beginning of looking into "Quantum Entanglement based Communication."
>A small colony on Mars.
>Solar roadways if someone can actually get those to work.
>The first ever Fusion reactors, but in their more experimental infancy stage.
>The application of Thorium based Fission reactors in large vehicles.
>New and even more retarded political movements from all sides of politics.
>Concept cities.

I'm going from a super optimistic point of view, I honestly don't think there'll be much more beyond some better cars, cooler architecture, and improved VR headsets in 20 years; everything else will stay the same. Or, ya know, we all die in a nuclear holocaust.
